Book excerpt: Straight Talk for Veterans: A Guide to Success in College answers the call by veterans and practitioners to move away from academic volumes that don't resonate with the reader and frankly fall short of really helping veterans succeed in college. With contributions from student veteran experts such as, Kevin Jones, Janine Wert, Aynsley Diamond, Adam Fullerton, Sharon Young, Michael Kirchner, Sarah Minnis, Glenn Phillips, Sosanya Jones, and David Vacchi, this volume answers the need from the field for a text that can both inform practitioners who intend to help veterans succeed and speak in no-nonsense language that veterans prefer. Veteran-friendliness is a straightforward concept that is, in most contexts, more lip-service than action and is rarely achieved. Conceptualizing veteran-friendliness is best done in plain language, the way veterans talk to each other, and is about improving the cultural competency of non-veterans. Straight Talk for Veterans is a straight-forward guide primarily intended for those transitioning from the military to higher education, but also for veteran transitions to civilian life. Designed as a companion text aligned with veteran transition curricula, it serves the dual purpose of guiding veterans through the initial culture shock that can come with joining an academic community directly from the military and guiding practitioners to be able to support veterans through a more culturally competent lens. Straight talk's diverse chapter authors deliver a comprehensive array of accessible information that covers concepts of negotiating transitions, navigating higher education, skills assessment and translation, and a series of fresh perspectives on concepts frequently misunderstood or mischaracterized by civilians. Written in a style that speaks directly to the student, this text is most valuable to the student veteran or the campus that wants to focus their energies on the real success of student veterans: graduating and finding a job.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ed Schultz is here to slay the "right-wing radio dragon" and revitalize the charge against Bush-era "conservative cruelty" with his own bold, irreverent truth-talk. When the self-described "gun-toting, meat-eating, drug-free liberal" from America's heartland came out swinging with his syndicated radio program, The Ed Schultz Show, listeners realized right away that this was no cookie-cutter liberal, but a tough-talking advocate for everything that's right about the left. "A free press is all that stands between you and a dictatorship," warns Schultz, in defiance of the Bush administration and ultra-conservative talking heads like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, whom he blames for quashing political debate just when America needs it most. While Big Ed has what it takes to "go bare-knuckle brawling" with his staunchest detractors, it is with a deep compassion and impeccable common sense that he describes how our "government by the rich and for the rich" is imperiling the lives of average hard-working Americans. In Straight Talk from the Heartland, Schultz rails against the havoc that our nation's leaders are wreaking on everything from international relations to homeland defense, from our skyrocketing federal deficit to the disenfranchised families of rural America who are struggling to make ends meet. With a heady mix of patriotism, outrage, humor, and hope, he makes an urgent appeal to universal virtues such as honesty and liberty, and reminds readers of what he calls the Four Pillars of a Great Nation: Defending America: "We have lost faith in our leaders. The world has lost faith in us. Our foray into Iraq, to disarm a nation of biological and nuclear weapons they did not have, has shrunk American credibility like a cheap sweater." A Sound Economy: "The Bushies are like street hustlers. While they show you a meager tax cut with one hand, they steal your wallet with the other." Feeding the Nation: "Bad farm policy and bad trade agreements are running the American farmer off the land. It's killing small towns, and small towns are the heart of this nation." Educating America: "Don't start counting your tax break just yet. Your state and local taxes are rising to support the unfunded mandate of the No Child Left Behind act." "I'm here to give it to you straight," Big Ed says. "I've got faith that, when Americans grasp what's going on around them, they'll start acting like a bear fresh out of hibernation -- famished, ill-tempered, and ready to start raising hell." Straight Talk from the Heartland is the wake-up call America has been waiting for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our idea was to interview local Vietnam Veterans and feature a biography once a month in the Poplar Bluff paper The Daily American Republic. We hoped we'd get at least sixteen interviews in order that we could have enough to run one a month, September 2015 through December of 2016. Not many of us knew any Vietnam Veterans, and those of us who did stated the Veterans we knew never spoke of their experiences. Charlotte Gholson of the Poplar Bluff Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) Chapter shared that she knew of one, and she wrangled an invitation for us to attend the September 2015 meeting of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1056. Charlotte and I went to that meeting and had sixteen veterans sign up that day to be interviewed.Once the first few biographies were published in the local newspaper, we discovered there were many Vietnam Veterans among us as more revealed their military past. In some capacity we already knew them. We had worked with them and attended church with them. They were our neighbors, they sat on Boards of Directors for different entities. They were teachers in our schools, our pastors, our doctors and nurses. The newspaper articles were working! Long overdue for recognition for their service, it was one way for our DAR Chapter to say "thank you for your service."

In addition to remembering those who passed away in those dark days of war, a sincere debt of gratitude is owed to all those now in their twilight years who gave all that they had for King and Country. In this new and revised third edition, with additional material to celebrate the lives of D-Day and Arnhem veterans, Gary Bridson-Daley presents 46 of over 150 interviews he conducted with veterans over recent years, adding to the history books the words and the original poetry of those who fought and supported the war effort to ensure freedom, peace and prosperity for generations to come. From each corner of the British Isles and every armed service, from Dam Buster George 'Johnny' Johnson through to riveter Susan Jones: heroes, all.

Book excerpt: Ever since the days of Homer, warriors have faced an epic battle for which many were ill-prepared - coming home after a life of military service. Whether you served three years or thirty, transitioning to civilian life is an Odyssey in its own right. Despite over 40,000 veteran advocacy organizations trying to assist military members, massive corporate hiring programs for veterans, and increased efforts by the Department of Defense, veteran transition is tough stuff - not just for our military service members but their families as well. Many veterans say that transition to civilian life is the biggest obstacle they've ever faced. What if it didn't have to be this way? What if everything you needed for a happy and prosperous transition was already inside you? What if the very warrior ethos forged in the mission-focused environment of military service was the single greatest asset in your kit bag? Mission America combines a no B.S. look at the realities of military transition and an eye-opening perspective on how to leverage the highly relevant warrior attributes you already possess. Retired Green Beret and strategic entrepreneur Scott Mann takes you on a journey where you'll see that, in order to live the life you've so richly earned through your selfless service, there is still one more mission in front of you...MISSION AMERICA.

Book excerpt: On 8 November 2004, the largest battle of the War on Terror began, with the US Army's assault on Fallujah and its network of tens of thousands of insurgents hiding in fortified bunkers, on rooftops, and inside booby-trapped houses. For Sgt. David Bellavia of 3rd Platoon, Alpha Company, it quickly turned into a battle on foot, from street to street and house to house. On the second day, he and his men laid siege to a mosque, only to be driven to a rooftop and surrounded, before heavy artillery could smash through to rescue them. By the third day, Bellavia charges an insurgent-filled house and finds himself trapped with six enemy fighters. One by one, he shoots, wrestles, stabs, and kills five of them, until his men arrive to take care of the final target. It is one of the most hair-raising battle stories of any age -- yet it does not spell the end of Bellavia's service. It would take serveral more weeks before the Battle of Fallujah finally came to a close, with Bellavia, miraculously, alive. In the words of the author: "HOUSE TO HOUSE holds nothing back. It is a raw, gritty look at killing and combat and how men react to it. It is gut-wrenching, shocking and brutal. It is honest. It is not a glorification of war. Yet it will not shy from acknowledging this: sometimes it takes something as terrible as war for the full beauty of the human spirit to emerge."

Book excerpt: I'm Ready to Talk Two continues with the personal stories about Vietnam experiences that were started in our first book, I'm Ready to Talk. As with our previous book, members of the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association share even more experiences about serving during the Vietnam War. Stories come from all branches of our military, all ranks, and from throughout the period between 1959 and 1975. Over 140 stories from 70+ Vietnam veterans are included. Some stories will make you laugh, others will make you cry, and all tell the deeply personal experiences that our veterans lived through. As our first book did, this book will open your eyes to the kaleidoscope of their experiences and let you feel why over 90% of our veterans would do it again if our country needed us to. "Bob Babcock has helped advance the understanding of the Vietnam War by compiling a significant sequel of experiences and stories by veterans of one of our deadliest and longest wars. Vietnam will always have its place in the history of this Nation. Consider well these emotional, life-affirming stories; from them there is much to learn and appreciate." LTC (Ret) Norman E. Zoller, JAG Two tours in Vietnam, Field Artillery Special Forces (1964-1965); 82nd Abn Div (1968-1969)
