Book Synopsis Straight Talk: Biblical Christianity V. Religion by : Roy Standifer
Download or read book Straight Talk: Biblical Christianity V. Religion written by Roy Standifer and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-06-12 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A look at the Creator’s answers regarding who we are, our origin, and what life is all about. God has revealed Himself extensively and His revelations are straightforward but we have distorted and clouded them with “religion.” He has paid the full price Himself for our violations of His holiness so our failure to respond in faith constitutes rejection and has the consequence of eternal separation from Him. The main reason you haven’t responded is that you haven’t taken the time to look – you have simply been going along with the crowd. Shouldn’t you at least take the time to look and see where that crowd is taking you? After looking, reject as you wish, just don’t reject without looking – that’s foolish!
Book Synopsis God Believes in Love by : Gene Robinson
Download or read book God Believes in Love written by Gene Robinson and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the IX Bishop of the Diocese of New Hampshire in the Episcopal Church, the first openly gay person elected to the episcopate and the world’s leading religious spokesperson for gay rights and gay marriage—a groundbreaking book that persuasively makes the case for same-sex marriage using a commonsense, reasoned, religious argument. Robinson holds the religious text of the Bible to be holy and sacred and the ensuing two millennia of church history to be relevant to the discussion. He is equally familiar with the secular and political debate about gay marriage going on in America today, and is someone for whom same-sex marriage is a personal issue; Robinson was married to a woman for fourteen years and is a father of two children and has been married to a man for the last four years of a twenty-five-year relationship. Robinson has a knack for taking complex and controversial issues and addressing them in plain direct language, without using polemics or ideology, putting forth his argument for gay marriage, and bringing together sacred and secular points of view.

Book Synopsis Gay Conversations with God by : James Alexander Langteaux
Download or read book Gay Conversations with God written by James Alexander Langteaux and published by Findhorn Press. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Representing a first in gay and Christian publishing, this provocative book presents a complete reversal of thought and action, contending that God loves homosexuals without attempting to refute scripture references. The study confronts its subject with a quirky sense of humor in the spirit of the “bedtime story,” providing a rare evangelical Christian volume addressed directly to the gay community. Unorthodox in its presentation, this guide speaks the language of those who may feel abandoned, condemned, and damned while avoiding reinterpretations of scriptural passages, making the gospel accessible to a younger, free-spirited generation. Spearheading a volatile topic with candor and grace, this consideration reframes the never-ending question, Is homosexuality a sin? and instead asks the gay community for a cease-fire—to forgive, love, and help put a stop to a cultural war being waged in the world.

Book excerpt: To all those who feel lonely, empty, broken, forgotten, and starving for fulfillment in life...If you're a single woman, you've heard it a thousand times: Jesus should be enough for you. We don't really know why you're still single, but hang in there, girl. Maybe if you just do all the right things, God will bless you. But sometimes (many times, if we're being totally honest) it just doesn't feel like Jesus is enough--even though you know He should be. Why can't you experience a fulfilling relationship with an awesome Christian guy--what's wrong with you? You want to be faithful to your Savior but find yourself longing for more--and feeling guilty about it. All of it leaves you wondering if you're good enough or undeserving of happiness because of mistakes you've made in the past. You really do want Jesus to be enough, but you sometimes wonder if God even cares about you anymore. If that describes you how you feel as a single woman, you are not alone. As a single, Christian mother for 17 years, Monica knows what it's like to long for more. Her candid conversation about her struggle with these realities will encourage any Christian--but especially the single woman who feels as if God has forgotten her. Monica reveals how indulging in her own "buffets" left her famished and longing for food that fulfills--a feast from her Fiancé above. What she learned on her journey and now shares in these compelling pages is that you can enjoy the most satisfying meal for a single women's starving soul by honestly answering the one question you've been afraid to ask: Is Jesus really enough?

Book Synopsis Soft Patriarchs, New Men by : W. Bradford Wilcox
Download or read book Soft Patriarchs, New Men written by W. Bradford Wilcox and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2004-05 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of dramatic, recent changes in American family life, evangelical and mainline Protestant churches took markedly different positions on family change. This work explains why these two traditions responded so differently to family change and then goes on to explore how the stances of evangelical and mainline Protestant churches toward marriage and parenting influenced the husbands and fathers that fill their pews. According to W. Bradford Wilcox, the divergent family ideologies of evangelical and mainline churches do not translate into large differences in family behavior between evangelical and mainline Protestant men who are married with children. Mainline Protestant men, he contends, are "new men" who take a more egalitarian approach to the division of household labor than their conservative peers and a more involved approach to parenting than men with no religious affiliation. Evangelical Protestant men, meanwhile, are "soft patriarchs"—not as authoritarian as some would expect, and given to being more emotional and dedicated to their wives and children than both their mainline and secular counterparts. Thus, Wilcox argues that religion domesticates men in ways that make them more responsive to the aspirations and needs of their immediate families.

Book excerpt: Here Comes the Bride is a spiritual guide for women desiring a husband who embraces commitment, God, and traditional values. Through scripture and biblical passages as well as old school R&B and his own experiences, Moore offers advice to women who patiently wait for a godly husband. As a reformed Prince Charming, Moore shares his wisdom as to how to distinguish Mr. Right, a devoted husband, from Prince Charming, who talks a good game but doesn't deliver on his promises. He provides advice on disentangling yourself from the clutches of a "womanizer" in order to open yourself up to the man that God has for you. He enumerates the qualities of a godly husband and the red flags to avoid when you evaluate your true partner. It's fascinating how Moore instructs his readers to use the word of God to break free from their cycles of disappointment. He stresses that by spending time building a relationship with God first then waiting for a partner who will appreciate your many assets, your true happiness will soon be realized. With a delicate mix of anecdotes, humor, and strategic advice, Moore will guide you into abandoning destructive patterns that interfere with real love. Told in plain and direct language, this is a book for any single or divorced woman who wants to change her life by only accepting a partner who will commit to a faith-based passionate life together.

Book Synopsis The Christian and the Pharisee by : Dr. R. T. Kendall
Download or read book The Christian and the Pharisee written by Dr. R. T. Kendall and published by FaithWords. This book was released on 2009-05-30 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reproduces a candid exchange of letters between two leading religious figures ' an evangelical preacher and a senior Jewish rabbi. This groundbreaking publication is a rare opportunity to read the heartfelt correspondence of two prolific and acclaimed theologians, as they both seek to vigorously defend their own beliefs and allow themselves to be challenged by the claims of the other. As the discussion continues we see mutual respect grow and a strong friendship forged before the relationship is inevitably tested as they encounter points of seemingly irreconcilable differences. Though there are issues and beliefs which separate the two theological camps, this book shows how they share enough to not only get along, but form strong alliances.
Book Synopsis Almost Christian by : Kenda Creasy Dean
Download or read book Almost Christian written by Kenda Creasy Dean and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-07-16 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the National Study of Youth and Religion--the same invaluable data as its predecessor, Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers--Kenda Creasy Dean's compelling new book, Almost Christian, investigates why American teenagers are at once so positive about Christianity and at the same time so apathetic about genuine religious practice. In Soul Searching, Christian Smith and Melinda Lundquist Denton found that American teenagers have embraced a "Moralistic Therapeutic Deism"--a hodgepodge of banal, self-serving, feel-good beliefs that bears little resemblance to traditional Christianity. But far from faulting teens, Dean places the blame for this theological watering down squarely on the churches themselves. Instead of proclaiming a God who calls believers to lives of love, service and sacrifice, churches offer instead a bargain religion, easy to use, easy to forget, offering little and demanding less. But what is to be done? In order to produce ardent young Christians, Dean argues, churches must rediscover their sense of mission and model an understanding of being Christian as not something you do for yourself, but something that calls you to share God's love, in word and deed, with others. Dean found that the most committed young Christians shared four important traits: they could tell a personal and powerful story about God; they belonged to a significant faith community; they exhibited a sense of vocation; and they possessed a profound sense of hope. Based on these findings, Dean proposes an approach to Christian education that places the idea of mission at its core and offers a wealth of concrete suggestions for inspiring teens to live more authentically engaged Christian lives. Persuasively and accessibly written, Almost Christian is a wake up call no one concerned about the future of Christianity in America can afford to ignore.
