Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story-Lives of Great Musicians Following the plan of his previous volume of Great Authors, the writer has here endeavoured to weave into more or less story form a few of the facts and incidents in the lives of some great musicians. It is hoped that young readers - and especially those to whom music is a subject of study - will take a greater interest in some of the masterpieces of composition when they have learnt something about the composers themselves, and the circumstances under which they wrote. The author desires to express his acknowledgments for the assistance he has derived from the following works. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Great Composers, or Stories of the Lives of Eminent Musicians The personal life of some great men, apart from the books they wrote, the machines they invented, the doctrines they taught, or the discoveries they made, is often hardly worth the telling, and there is even nobility in the self effacing thought that some have uttered, Remember my work, if you will, but let myself be forgotten.' But there are other great men, and all those to whom the name of artists is now applied, belong to this class, whose work, appealing as it does to the emotions, is itself peculiarly the product (if it is their work at all) of the emotional part of the man - he lives and works and rules in the wide field of the spiritual and the ideal, and without exception, the lives of such men, being so closely related to their work that the one can hardly exist or be understood without the other, never fail to be interesting and full of what we call 'romance' interwoven with everything they conceived, achieved, or were foiled in. And especially, it seems to me, is this true of all the great musicians who have lived. In studying their lives, from Mozart to Mendelssohn, I have found the peculiar sensitiveness to pleasure and pain, the over owing in all their life - ln their words and their work - of their keen delight in living and in the wonderful and beautiful world, which with eyes sometimes even bewildered with the sight of the loveliness that to others perhaps seems but a mere arrangement of colour or odd murmur of confused sounds, they are never tired of gazing on and having a part in - the true sign of the poet, be he a worker in words, tones, or colours And to show some thing of this life without pretension or learned disquisition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Great Musicians That the purpose1 of the public schools is the training of children for a higher citizenship, a more extensive helpfulness in affairs pertaining to the com mon good, no one questions; but we need expect no manifestation of a greater integrity, unless lofty ideals are kept constantly before them. Neither painter nor sculptor can produce a greater expres sion of beauty than that which has been built up in his own consciousness no individual can produce a greater expression of manhood or womanhood than that which he holds in his own mind. It is impor tant, therefore, that a high standard be set for the children in our schools to-day. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Story-Lives of Master Musicians The preparation of this volume began with a period of delightful research work in a great musical library. As a honeyvbee flutters from flower to flower, culling sweetness from many blossoms, so the compiler of such stories as these must gather facts from many sources - from biography, letters, journals and musical history. Then, impressed with the personality and in dividual achievement of each composer, the author has endeavored to present his life story. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anecdotes of Great Musicians: Three Hundred Anecdotes and Biographical Sketches of Famous Composers and Performers In the search for what this volume comprises, much material has been examined. Had the intention been to make it include all the anecdotes that are related of various musicians, three times the present space would have been necessary. But many of the narratives of past and current literature will not stand the test of probability, and in some cases the humor or reason for relation is hard to find. I have attempted to cull from the mass of material that came to my notice such anecdotes as have two features, - that of being characteristic of the person referred to, and that of possessing sufficient interest; and in this re-narration I have incorporated such bits of musical information, along biographical and historical lines, as came to mind at the time of writing, but letting this feature be secondary to the main idea of the work. Thus it is hoped that while my readers may find inter esting anecdote, they may also incidentally find that which is of more permanent value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Music and Musicians for Young Readers The only necessity for a preface to this little book is to explain that the work is not designed to take the place of text-books, works on harmony or thorough-bass, or those interesting lives of the great musicians which competent writers have given to us. Its object is only to interest young students in music in the technique of their art, andin the associations amid which great masters have worked. Only such rules of harmony are given as have a direct bearing upon the subject or composition under dis cussion, and these I have presented, after comparing them with standard authorities, in as simple a fashion as possi ble, relying upon any reader who is a thoughtful student progressing to technical study under a scientific instructor. Meanwhile some impetus and enthusiasm may be added, from reading this simple story of an art which all nations are in some fashion developing to-day, and which had its origin in an age that gave a significance to the victor crown of bay-leaves and laurel. Book excerpt: The World's Great Men of Music Story-Lives of Master Musicians by Harriette Brower Excerpt I PALESTRINA To learn something of the life and labors of Palestrina, one of the earliest as well as one of the greatest musicians, we must go back in the world's history nearly four hundred years. And even then we may not be able to discover all the events of his life as some of the records have been lost. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

The evolution of our modern system of harmony from the weird organum of Hucbald, and of our keys from the ecclesiastical modes, was so gradual that it is impossible to fix upon any date as the precise moment when one gave way definitely to the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Face to Face With Great Musicians Each name in the whole history of music conjures up for me a living personality, with whom I may in the silences of solitude, converse in no mistakable manner. It is no dead, empty-sounding word for me to see the name of a composer on a program; each number that is to be heard is a key which unlocks for me a stage on which is reenacted a scene from the drama of a man's life. In these little meetings face to face with great musicians, I have tried to make it possible for the most unlearned novice in music to enter the inner circle of musical creators and interpreters. With his father the lad remained, and found him a severe and domineering master. But in 1827 he died, leaving his Sixteen-year-old son alone in Paris. That stalwart self-reliance and sense of honour, which gave nobility to so much of Liszt's character, now showed itself; he sold his grand piano to pay the debts his father had left him, and sent for his mother to come to Paris, where he sup ported her by giving piano lessons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Musical Knowledge: The History, Technique, and Appreciation of Music, Together With Lives of the Great Composers; For Music-Lovers, Students, and Teachers This book has been planned with a view to placing before the gen eral reader the main facts that will enable him to appreciate music intelligently. One often hears the remark, I'm fond of music, but I don't understand it. The present work has been written with the idea of enabling the non-musician to comprehend the real meaning of the tonal art, and to familiarize himself with the value of the great composers' works, the use of the instruments, the various mu sical forms, and a number of subjects of similar importance. At the same time, certain other technical topics have been in cluded. While these have been presented in such a way as to be un derstood by the non-musician, they have been given with sufficient thoroughness to make the work useful also as a textbook. It is there fore fitted to the needs of students and teachers, as well as amateurs. An effort has been made to condense the chief points of a general musical education into a Single volume. While this book should prove of interest to the average reader, a course of study has been added, which will make it suitable for use in high schools or colleges also, or in any institution that aims to give a course in the under standing of music. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Boys Who Became Famous Men: Stories Of The Childhood Of Poets, Artists, And Musicians This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Many Of the lesser composers who did not influence musical history in any way have been omitted from its pages, or dismissed with a mere mention. It has been the effort Of the author, however, to bring to gether the lives of the great composers in such a manner that the average reader (with out any technical knowledge Of music) may understand how their work aided in musical development, and in what degree their schools were interwoven. In order to make this point more clear, the chronological order has not been adhered to where a departure from it seemed to make more definite the influence.
