Download or read book Life in South Africa (Classic Reprint) written by Lady Barker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in South Africa We must remember that this chances to be the very best moment of the whole year in which to see the Cape and the dwellers thereat. The cold weather has left its bright roses on the children's cheeks, and the winter rains exception ally having this year made every blade of grass and leaf of tree to laugh and sing in freshest green. After the dry, windy summer I am assured there is hardly a leaf and never a blade of grass to be seen in Cape Town, and only a lit tle straggling verdure under the shelter of the mountain. The great want of this place is water. No river, scarcely a brook, refreshes one's eye for many and many a league inward. The necessary water for the use of the town is brought down by pipes from the numerous springs which trickle out of the granite cliffs of Table Mountain, but there is never a sufficiency to spare for watering roads or grassplots. This scarcity is a double loss to residents and visitors, for one misses it both for use and beauty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outspan: Tales of South Africa The charm Of the life is indescribable, and none who have tasted it ever weary Of it, ever forget it, or cease to feel the longing to return when once they have quitted it. It was in '91, the year after the pioneers cut their way through the Bush, with Selous to guide them, and occupied Mashonaland. We followed their trail and lived again their anxious nights and days, when they, a small handful in a dense Bush, at the mercy Of the Matabele thousands, did not know at what hour they would be pounced on and massacred. Book Synopsis Versions of Zimbabwe. New Approaches to Literature and Culture by : Robert Muponde
Download or read book Versions of Zimbabwe. New Approaches to Literature and Culture written by Robert Muponde and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2005-06-15 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the result of a collaboration of scholars from southern Africa and overseas, whose work emphasises hitherto overshadowed subjects of literature, exposing new and untried approaches to Zimbabwean writing. The contributors focus on pluralities, inclusiveness and the breaking of boundaries, and elucidate how literary texts are betraying multiple versions and opinions of Zimbabwe, arguing that only a multiplicity of opinions on Zimbabwe can do the complexity of the society and history justice.
