Interests throughout our land are too often local, and loyalty is too apt to be merely civic pride; but the story of Massachusetts, as it is known to all Americans, is dear to all, for it is, to a certain extent, the story of America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Massachusetts: Stories of the Old Bay State The history of the American Republic, as regards the founding of its free institutions, and the birth of the civil and religious liberty which we enjoy, was begun in the Old Bay State. In a certain sense, especially as stamping the character of the newer States, Massachusetts may be called with truth the mother-state Of the Union. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bay State Forty-Fourth: A Regimental Record It would be quite foolish, as well as useless to boast that the 44th contained the only young men of promise that have enlisted since the war began; or to clam that "our Regiment" is in advance of all others in education or morality; nor is it intention of the regard to this thousands; - he wishes merely to make mention of the thoughts that occur to one who has simply met our boys as comrades in camp duty or on the march. The love of fun is an element in the character of most boys; and in the 44th that characteristic seems a marked one. We mean genuine fun, without the desire for mischief that very often accompanies the element mentioned. the mock dress parades and kitten burials that made some rainy days at Readville pass more quickly, were evidences of the humor of the ring-leaders there; and, at the present time, whenever there is an opportunity, something laughable is brought forward to enliven the crowd. On the voyage to Newbern in spite of the actual discomforts experienced, we enjoyed many a hearty laugh, and had good cause to thank the originator of the jokes perpetrated. To ventilate the space assigned us between decks, a "win's'l" was extended from a point above the upper deck to the lower, the opening to which was just above the boys' heads. The stairway from deck to desk being very slippery, those passing up or coming down quite naturally grasped a fold of the wind-sail to present a fall; and the consequence was, that the air intended for the companies below had but an imperfect passage. Here was a chance for a disagreement; and the subscriber stood looking on, imagining that nothing could prevent hard words, at least. Though first set down (as appears by the context) for the edification of the writer's children, Mr. Carew's views upon some subjects, notably Cromwell and the later Puritans, would have rendered their publication inopportune in New England at a time much before the present. But if he sets forth these matters in a somewhat novel light, he is severer still upon certain phases of early life in Virginia. He speaks without fear or favour, and I have printed it as written, altering only the spelling; and although occasionally he uses words only suited to the robuster stomachs of his time, I have let them stand: partly that the sweet and noble temper of his story atones for them, partly that our own stomachs are a trifle over queasy (as to words alone). To use his own, the fight ing companies of the Old Dominion were but a ribald crew and the events, even the incidents, which he narrates I have found curiously verified in memoirs nearly contemporary, notably the diaries of his acquaintance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The State House in Boston, Massachusetts It has been said that the beauty and advantages of this situation, which induced the Legislature to make choice of it for the present building, are acknowledged by both natives and foreigners. It vies with the most picturesque scenes in Europe, and will bear comparison with the castle hill of Edinburgh, the famous bay of Naples, or any other most commanding prospect. Previous to its enlargement a few years since, it was de scribed as an oblong building, 173 feet front and 61 deep; it consists externally of a basement story, 20 feet high, and a principal story, 30 feet. This, in the centre of the front, is covered with an attic 60 feet wide, 20 feet high, which is covered with a pediment. Immediately above this rises a dome, 50 feet diameter and 30 feet high; the whole termi nates with an elegant Circular lanthorn. The basement story is finished plain on the wings, with square windows. The centre is 91 feet in length, and formed of arches which project 14 feet; they form a covered walk below, and sup port a colonnade of Corinthian columns of the same extent above. The outside walls are of large patent bricks. The lower story is divided into a large hall or public walk in the centre, 55 feet square, and 20 feet high, supported by Doric columns; two entries, each 16 feet wide, with two flights of stairs in each; and at the ends offices for the Treasurer, Secretary, Adjutant and Quartermaster General. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Steam Packets on the Chesapeake: A History of the Old Bay Line Since 1840 One of the Observances of the Centennial was the publication of a book of limited distribution tracing the company's story from its inception down to the centennial year. This work, printed by the Dietz Press of Richmond, Virginia, was issued under the joint auspices of the Baltimore Steam Packet Company and of The Mariners Museum in Newport News, Virginia, of which I was then Corresponding Secretary. Since 1940, however, the Old Bay Line and the Nation at large have passed through another World War deeply affecting the destinies of all. So much has happened to men and ships in the interim, that it was logically decided a new edition of the book, brought up to date with additional chapters covering these more recent events, would prove a useful contribution to the literature of the sea. In revising and enlarging the text, the author was given, as on the initial occasion, the unstinted help and encouragement of the Company and, particularly so, from two officials who by now are to be considered old friends, Bob Dunn, president of the Line, and Ray Jones, passenger traffic manager. The following passages, excerpts taken from the preface of the first edition of The Old Bay Line: 1840-1940, are still applicable to this revised work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Souvenir of Massachusetts Legislators, Vol. 5: 1896 The Souvenir of 1896 represents a Legislature that was called to deal with more important questions than usual, and that had unusual experiences to meet. Never before in the memory of this generation, has a whole state been called upon to mourn for its chief executive, removed by death from his high office. The lamented Greenhalge, called away while in the midst of the work to which he was giving his best thoughts and noblest endeavors, was mourned sincerely by the whole state because he has been in the best sense the Governor of the whole state. The great question of better transportation facilities, which culminated in the Southern Union passenger station bill: and the Pipe Line bill, by which it was proposed to give the people of the state cheaper gas for fuel and illumination, were bills which, of themselves, would have justified the claim for a great public work accomplished. This was the Legislature also which sent to the people for judgment the resolve for biennial elections of members of the state government; and it also passed a bill fixing for the next ten years the lines for councillor and senatorial districts, and allotted the number of representatives to each county for the same period. It abolished the days of grace on notes; appropriated$450.- coo for finishing and furnishing parts of the new State House; and $375,000 for the "preservation" of the "Bulfinch front" of the old State House. It sent no committee on a "junketing" trip outside the state. And many other notable things it did, but space forbids their enumeration here. The following pages show you the portraits, give their biographical sketches, and show the autographs of the men in Senate, House and Executive Council, who helped do this great work; as well as the members of the National Legislature that represent the old Bay State in either branch.
