Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to prove innocence? Raj was clueless for a couple of minutes, then he checked the Rajjang’s order, and something clicked for him. He took Anil and Maya, the prostitute, into another chamber and told them, “You have to say there was no pleasure in your activity. Per the order, you should not take someone to the army camp for pleasure.” Anil asked, “Who will believe us?” Raj replied, “This is just to make Batu believe in you. He has been following celibacy since birth, so he may. But, Anil, you made a grave mistake that may affect all of us.” Anil “Sorry, I will not repeat it.” Raj “You should not, and remember both of you were not having any pleasure.” Raj came out and asked Anil and Maya in front of everyone, “Are you having pleasure in your tent?” Anil replied, “No, I was just punishing her for not giving me the service which I have paid her for.” Maya “No pleasure. He was punishing me.” Raj “If they do not have any pleasure, they should not get any punishment as per the order.” Batu “It looks like they were enjoying it. I saw it, and they were making noises.” Rajjang “Batu, you have to prove it.” Batu replied, “How can I prove it?” Raj said, “It is simple. Whatever Anil did, you can do that to Maya. Maya, Can you please cooperate?” Batu replied, “I can’t do that. I never did that, and I am feeling shy.” Raj told Batu, “you have to do that to prove your point. If you feel pleasure, we will punish Anil. You can do that in a separate chamber, in the presence of Anil, me, and Rajjang. ” Anil, Batu, Raj, Maya, and Rajjang went to separate chambers. Maya took her clothes off and lay down. Batu joined her and tried to do whatever he could recall. Maya kept her calm and acted like she was in pain. Batu was feeling very awkward, relentless, and sweaty. Raj asked Maya, “Do you feel pleasure doing this?” Maya replied, “No, not at all,” Raj asked Batu, “What about you, Batu?” Batu replied, “Sorry, Raj and Rajjang. It was a horrible experience. I will withdraw my complaint. Please don’t take any action against me.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “She will marry someone from outside the Rajput clan,” Raj Guru says in a soft, low but clear tone, every word falling like pebbles in the stillness of water. Shock waves reverberate inside the walls of the Raj Mandir. Everyone is dumbstruck as this is unthinkable and unacceptable. The Raj Guru shakes his head slowly and replies, ”I have done my calculations many times and the same reading keeps coming out every single time. She will not marry anyone from Hindustan! The person she marries will come from across seven seas.” Queen Shwetambari gets up from her throne in part shock and part excitement. If she plays her cards properly, then she could remove the last trace of Queen Serenova’s memories from their lives and get back her glory and power once again…. Eighteen years later, Princess Mandira marries Sir Victor, the Duke of Cornwall to gain independence for her country from the British rule. The story is set in the early eighteenth century and moves from the exotic terrain of the Himalayas across seven seas to the all-powerful Great Britain. What follows is a nail biting interaction when the grandeur and valour of the Rajput culture meets the cool elegance of the British nobility. Through the beautiful Mandira, the author in her two series explores the effect that the Hindu philosophy has when it is placed against the backdrop of a British landscape and brings out some interesting comparisons between two very diverse cultures!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for the location in which the self is ‘at home’ has been one of the primary projects of modern literature all over the world. Interpreting Homes: South Asian Literature attempts to map the narratives of the 'home' in South Asian literature from the advance of modernity on the subcontinent till the present day. It aims to read more than the domestic into representations of the home, to explore not only the geographical, but also the psychological and material connotations of 'home'. Its goal is to disassemble the concept of 'home' in all its incarnations as confinement, as stability, as security, as myth and as desire. The book problematises ‘home’ and its experience in different contexts. It investigates if and how home changes its significations when articulated from different locations, in different languages and by different subjects, paying particular attention to ideological determinants like gender and class. The editors of the anthology have encouraged contributors to also address diaspora writing and to achieve the widest possible comparative perspective. Though the focus has been kept on literature, some papers deal with cultural narratives of home in oral and folk mediums. The collection comprises of an Introduction and 18 original essays divided into six thematic sections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Applause Books). This the first book to examine the films of the acclaimed and popular Indian-born and Harvard educated filmmaker, Mira Nair. A unique voice in cinema today, she is one of the few female directors who made it to the top of a male-dominated profession. Her films feature an incomparably sensuous visual style yet at the same time often record the injustice of the disenfranchised and the cross-pollination of East and West. Her twin themes of realism and romance make for dazzling cinema. John Kenneth Muir analyzes all of Nair's work, including: Salaam Bombay! (1988), the groundbreaking story of a young boy abandoned by his family on the streets of Bombay; Mississippi Masala (1991), an interracial small town romance between an Indian woman (Sarita Choudhury) and an African American businessman (Denzel Washington); Monsoon Wedding (2001), featuring a Bollywood carnival atmosphere, one of the most successful foreign films ever released in the United States; Hysterical Blindness (2002), the HBO film featuring Uma Thurman and Juliette Lewis, looking for love in all the wrong places; The big-budget Hollywood adaptation of the Thackery novel Vanity Fair (2004), starring Reese Witherspoon, Gabriel Byrne, and Eileen Atkins.
