Hudson is revered in Argentina, where they refer to him as Guillermo Enrique Hudson and name streets and towns after him. In simple and stately prose, he writes about his boyhood as one of several sons in an English family that ran an estancia on the Pampas. Despite several failed attempts to school him, he managed to pick up one of the best educations available: by using his eyes and ears to study nature. Hudson's time, the Argentine pampas was a land of freedom and excitement, which he describes well in this memoir. Descriptions of natural history and wildlife also abound, together with politics and interpersonal relationships of the times. You'd think Hudson's book would give insights into Hudson's childhood and life - and it does - but more importantly it recreates the history, culture and geography of Argentina in a way few travel books accomplish. "Far Away and Long Ago" is perhaps one of the greatest autobiographies ever written, a book that will, without question, withstand several readings.

Even though his catch was worthless he gave praise to God for his ability to work and catch fish. He brought the carcass ashore and laid it out to dry thinking the skin may be of value and returned to his fishing. On the second cast of his nets he found them to be even heavier than the first. Still he dragged them ashore. On examining the nets he found in it only a large jar, full of sand and mud. On seeing this, his heart was troubled as he wondered what he and his family were to eat that night. He put the jar aside and a third time, cast the net, and waited till it had sunk and was motionless: he then drew it out, and found in it a quantity of broken jars and pots. Upon seeing this, he raised his head towards heaven, and said, O God, Thou knowest that I cast not my net more than four times; and I have now cast it three times! Then—exclaiming, In the name of God!—he cast the net again into the sea, and waited till it was still; when he attempted to draw it up, but could not, for it clung to the bottom. He worked away at the nets and found in it a bottle of brass, filled with something, and having its mouth closed with a stopper of lead, bearing the impression of the seal of our lord Suleymán. At the sight of this, the fisherman was rejoiced, and said, This I will sell in the copper-market; for it is worth ten pieces of gold. He then shook it, and found it to be heavy, and said, I must open it, and see what is in it, and store it in my bag; and then I will sell the bottle in the coppermarket. So he took out a knife, and picked at the lead until he extracted it from the bottle. He then laid the bottle on the ground, and shook it, that its contents might pour out; but there came forth from it nothing but smoke, which ascended towards the sky, and spread over the face of the earth; at which he wondered excessively. After a little while, the smoke collected together, and was condensed, and then became agitated, and was converted into an 'Efreet (a Genie), whose head was in the clouds, while his feet rested upon the ground: his head was like a dome: his hands were like winnowing forks; and his legs, like masts: his mouth resembled a cavern: his teeth were like stones; his nostrils, like trumpets; and his eyes, like lamps. And so begins the story of the fisherman and the genie which takes many twists and turns along the way with altogether surprising results. And just what are they you ask? In Issue 253, “THE STORY OF THE PORTER THE LADIES OF BAGHDAD”, three visitors knock on the door of the house of the three beautiful women. They claim to be mendicants and visitors to the city and have become disoriented and lost on their way back to their lodgings. In reality they were the Kaleefeh (King), his Vizier, or Jafar, and They are invited in and given refreshments the porter during this time they hear the stories of the porter and of two of the ladies. After this the lady of the house invites the three mendicants to relate their stories. This they do, this is the story of the first of the three mendicants. The mendicant said his father was a King, and he had a brother who was also a King, in a neighbouring state. It so happened that his mother gave birth to him on the same day on which the son of my uncle was born. Several years passed until they attained manhood. It was custom for the mendicant to visit his uncle, and because of the length of the journey, he remained for several months. On one of these occasions the cousin paid him a great honour, slaughtering sheep and straining the wine for him. They sat down to drink; and when the wine had affected us, he said to me, O son of my uncle, I have need of your assistance in an affair of interest to me, and I ask you to hear me out in that which I desire to do. I replied, I was at his service:—and I was sworn to secrecy. He then rose and left the room for a little while before returning, followed by a perfumed woman decked with ornaments, and wearing a dress of extraordinary value. He looked at me and said, Take this woman, and go to the burial-ground:—and gave directions on how to get there. He also said to enter the burial-ground, and wait for hi, This I did said the mendicant. A short while later the cousin arrived with a basin of water and a small hammer. He went to a tombstone and chiselled away at it. Once the headstone had been removed it revealed a set of stairs leading into the earth. The cousin then asked him to seal the tomb after the woman and he had descended into the earth. Shocked at the request the cousin reminded the mendicant of his sworn oaths and tells him that he and his lover have been planning this for over a year. Reluctantly agreeing, the cousin and his lover descend into the underground chamber and are sealed in forever. What happened next you may well ask? Did he keep his word? Also, just how did he lose his eye and why didn’t he return to his father’s kingdom and resume his royal duties? Surely he would have been a king by now instead of a travelling mendicant? Smaller and smaller grew the circles made by the stork in his flight. Lower and lower he sank towards the earth, until at length he rested on the highest chimney of the castle. But before letting the children slip down the narrow black hole he paused and looked carefully around. While in the air, this old castle, with its round turrets glittering in the rising sun, had appeared to him a most stately edifice. But now, when quite close, the stork discovered many things that did not please him. The walls were sadly out of repair, there were holes in the roof, whilst the courtyard was overgrown with weeds. "I do not like this," said the stork, looking thoughtfully down his long, red beak. "This place seems to have a very bad landlord. A knight who cannot keep his castle in proper repair certainly does not deserve two children. I will take one away with me." "Which should he have now, the boy or the girl?" thought the stork. He looked once more thoughtfully down his long beak, and on the two children smiling happily in their dreams. "I think I will give him the boy," he said at length. "He will push his way in this wretched place better than the girl." With these words he made a movement to throw the little boy down the chimney. This, however, was not so easy as the stork had thought. In their sleep the little ones had embraced each other, and would not let go. "I have never had two such obstinate little creatures in my beak before," exclaimed the stork angrily. Then he began to shake them, at first gently, then harder, and at last so roughly that the children half awoke from their dreams, and looked at each other with blinking eyes. After this the boy would not let go his companion, and no wonder, for the little girl had shown him a pair of blue eyes of such wondrous beauty, that there were not many like them in the world. But the stork, now thoroughly angry, gave the poor little fellow a kick that sent him head first down the castle chimney. "Now, what shall I do with the other little thing?" said the stork thoughtfully, scratching the back of his ear. "Ah! I have it," he cried—the little girl had kept on blinking her eyes, and the stork had also seen their beautiful blue—"I have it!" he repeated. "Such eyes can only belong to Norway." High overhead soared the stork. Powerfully his wings clove the air as he sailed away towards the north. Well what happened to the babe with the beautiful blue eyes? Did the stork complete the journey to Norway and was Little Blue Eyes delivered to loving family? Did she grow up to become a loving mother?
