Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Life, Its Why and Wherefore Having from time to time written articles on insect life for journals and lectured upon the lives and habits of various small creatures, I have been struck with the great interest shown by the public, and this despite the very large number of books already published upon Such subjects. To A recent investigation among the shelves a. Of one of our largest libraries. Has opened my eyes as to the reason of so much rm ignorance existing, with such a mass of Q knowledge obtainable It is that so many 3 entomological experts use terms which Z are totally incomprehensible to the uninitiated, while, on the other hand, some of the most pleasing little books upon the subject are written for children, in childish language, or mixed up with a mass of information upon trees, flowers, shrubs, etc., etc. I am venturing in these brief pages to place in the hands of farmers, gardeners and others interested, a few. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Insect Life: Second Series Summer and Autumn IN studying insects it is very desirable to be able to keep them under observation from day to day. For this purpose various sorts of breeding cages are commonly employed. A breeding cage is simply a closed vessel in which a caterpillar or other insect may be kept alive and fed, so that it will go through the cycle of its changes where it can be seen. A Simple form of such a cage consists of a lantern globe or lamp chimney resting upon a wide, Shallow dish, in which sand or earth to a depth of two or three inches has been placed. When it is to be used for large caterpillars a small glass vial nearly full of water is set down in the sand in the middle of the space, with the top of the vial projecting somewhat above the surface. In this vial a leaf or branch of the food plant is placed. The cage is now ready for the caterpillar, which will find its food kept fresh for two or three days by the water in the vial. Then a new leaf or branch may be exchanged for the old one. The open top of the lamp chimney is to be kept covered with a small piece of mosquito netting, held'in place by a rubber band. For the lower dish a flowerpot or a flower pot saucer serves the purpose very well. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insect Lives: As Told by Themselves HE present is an age of 'autobiographies' and 'reminiscences.' Celebrated men and women, from time to time, tell the story of words and deeds in which they have taken part. There is something very pleasant in these books; for, as we read them, we seem to have the whole scene brought vividly before us, and with more reality than if they had been taken from the pages of an ordinary biography. We propose to extend these 'reminiscences' to the Insects, and thus make them tell the story of their own lives. The idea of making the lower animals, or even plants, talk so as to be understood, is not new. So far back as b.c. 1209, in the days of Jotham (judges ix. 7 we read of trees being on the look-out for a king to reign over them; and the Bible gives the conversation that took place between the olive tree, the fig tree, the vine, and the bramble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insects: Their Life-Histories and Habits IN the following pages an attempt is made to set forth, in simple terms, the salient facts of entomology - that branch of science which treats of insects. It has been said truly that a man might devote his whole life to the study of only one insect without exhausting the possibilities of his subject. Consequently, a work such as the present must be in great measure a compilation, and I freely acknowledge my indebtedness to a large body of workers who have placed on record their observations concerning the structure and habits of insects. I believe that I am especially beholden to the writings of Lord Avebury, Professor G. H. Carpenter, Sir E. Bay Lankester, Professor E. B. Poulton, and Dr. David Sharp, but in almost every instance where an important fact or conclusion is re-stated, the name of the authority is given in the context. Thanks to their usually imposing size to their severe and irreproachably glossy garb to their short, stout, thickset Shape to the quaint ornamentation either of their brow or, also, of their thorax, they cut an excellent figure in the collector's boxes, especially when to our own species, oftenest of an ebon black, we add a few tropical species ashing with gleams of gold and ruddy copper. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of the Spider Orange and Serignan, the latter a little Provencal village that should be as widely celebrated as Maillane, have of late years rendered honour to a man whose brow deserves to be girt with a double and radiant crown. But fame - at least that which is not the true nor the great fame, but her illegitimate sister, and which creates more noise than durable work in the morning and evening papers - fame is often forgetful, negligent, behindhand or unjust; and the crowd is almost ignorant of the name of J. H. Fabre, who is one of the most profound and inventive scholars and also one of the purest writers and, I was going to add, one of the finest poets of the century that is just past.
