Book excerpt: Being autistic, to me, means a lot of different things, but one of the best things is that I can be so happy, so enraptured about things no one else understands and so wrapped up in my own joy that, not only does it not matter that no one else shares it, but it can become contagious. This is the part about autism that I can never explain. This is the part I never want to lose.' Julia Bascom's depiction of the joy of autistic obsessions tells a story about autism that is very rarely told. It tells of a world beyond impairments and medical histories, where the multiples of seven can open a floodgate of untranslatable joy, where riding a train can make everything feel perfectly sized and full of light, and where flapping your hands just so amplifies everything you feel. The Obsessive Joy of Autism will resonate powerfully with other autistic people, and encourage those who have a person with autism in their lives to look out for that joy, to chase it, to get obsessed.

Book excerpt: This book was written to let parents of children on the autism spectrum know that they did nothing wrong and that their child or children being on the spectrum is in no way their fault. I did everything right with my third child and only son, and he was diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum. I believe that we as parents of these exceptional children have been given the opportunity to love these uniquely beautiful, smart, bright, talented, and loving children unconditionally and for us, as parents, to experience the absolute joy of receiving their pure and sincere unconditional love, which ultimately brings us an indescribable joy that words cannot express. I thank God for this unique opportunity, and I would not change it for the world. This sunrise reminded me that God has given me the opportunity to watch my own son rise out of the gray mist of autism. Amen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, the statement "Give me the red cup" was nothing more than a teaching tool for Susan Moore Vosseler as she worked with the unique needs of persons diagnosed with autism. But since that time, the statement has taken on a whole new level of profundity for Vosseler-one that has been an incredible inspiration for both her and others. Collected here are ten brief stories from Vosseler's career in autism. From the first child she worked with to the boy who despised music, from the time she helped cook a bus to the time she moved mountains, the stories in Give Me the Red Cup are heartfelt but deliberate, as each tale highlights a specific value that Vosseler encountered. These recollections are an expression of sincere gratitude for the great lessons that each child, parent, therapist, teacher, and friend demonstrated over the course of her career. Honest and inspirational, these stories touch the heart of anyone who lives or works in the world of autism and invites all readers to know the joy in every day, in any moment. How would you teach give me the red cup? was a pivotal moment for Vosseler. This little book honors that moment by highlighting and honoring just a few more moments in the nearly twenty years since. At the end of the book, Susan Moore Vosseler invites readers to notice and collect their own joys...an on-going, living awareness of joy. Much as the moment continues for Vosseler. Joy pervades.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When two year old Daniel lay motionless on the floor staring at the ceiling, his mother had no idea that he was exemplifying the first symptoms of what would be diagnosed as autism two years later. The emergency room visit on that June 2002 afternoon resulted in a forty-eight hour hospital stay where Daniel was afterwards discharged with a simple, "rough horseplay" diagnosis. However, within the weeks that followed he lost his speech, hearing, and cognitive skills, eventually slipping into a world of his own. Daniel was born a very healthy, bouncing, bundle of joy. He was an even more active toddler. However, in one moment of time his laughter ceased, the pitterpatter of his little feet racing through the house ended, and his voice that was once heard in family conversations was replaced by ear-piercing screams and whines as he tried to communicate his needs. Convinced that Daniel was misdiagnosed, his mother prayed and began to seek help. Without knowing the giant she was facing, she relentlessly looked for answers and found them. On May 19, 2004, Daniel was diagnosed with autism. But that was not the end of the story! Instead, it was just the beginning! Rainbow Over My House is the amazing story of Daniel's journey from pain and agony, to triumphant victory over autism! As you read this wonderful story you will laugh, cry tears of joy, and even cheer as it shares details of Daniel's victory, such as him winning a potato sack race at a picnic! Expect your faith to be ignited as you find the hope and courage to once again believe in miracles!

Linking artistic processes and production to both personal worlds and wider issues, the book examines how artists negotiate their relationships between self and society and between artistic freedom and social responsibility. It is based on original research into the discourses and artistic practices of local artists, with a special focus on emerging artists and artists whose work and perspectives engage with questions of identity. Reimagining contemporary Singapore and their place within it, artists are asserting their multiple and heterogeneous self-identities and contesting hegemonic norms and notions, as they negotiate and adapt to the world around them. This book is relevant to students and researchers in the fields of cultural studies, media studies, art, sociology of art, arts education, and race and ethnicity studies.

Book excerpt: An ethnographic study of diverse children on the autism spectrum and the role of media and technology in their everyday lives. In spite of widespread assumptions that young people on the autism spectrum have a “natural” attraction to technology—a premise that leads to significant speculation about how media helps or harms them—relatively little research actually exists about their everyday tech use. In Kids Across the Spectrums, Meryl Alper fills this gap with the first book-length ethnography of the digital lives of autistic young people. Based on research with more than sixty neurodivergent children from an array of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, Kids Across the Spectrums delves into three overlapping areas of their media usage: cultural belonging, social relationships, and physical embodiment. Alper’s work demonstrates that what autistic youth do with technology is not radically different from their non-autistic peers. However, significant social and health inequalities—including limited recreational programs, unsafe neighborhoods, and challenges obtaining appropriate therapeutic services—spill over into their media habits. With an emphasis on what autistic children bring to media as opposed to what they supposedly lack socially, Alper argues that their relationships do not exist outside of how communication technologies affect sociality, nor beyond the boundaries of stigmatization and society writ large. Finally, she offers practical suggestions for the education, healthcare, and technology sectors to promote equity, inclusion, access, and justice for autistic kids at home, at school, and in their communities.

Book excerpt: Almost 80% of autistic people have a co-occurring mental health condition, and this powerful book puts their voices front and centre, showcasing the human experience beyond the medicalised language and diagnoses. This poignant essay collection shines a light on voices that often go unheard in our society. Covering a range of experiences from multiple ages, genders and backgrounds, discussions include trauma, relationships, masking, healthcare, intersectionality and more. The essays are structured along the topics of hurt (personal experiences and how they shaped the contributor), help (the tools and tips which have helped on their personal journeys), and hope (looking forward to the future). At times touching, humorous, and also enraging, this book offers a frank and honest depiction of the challenges autistic people face and the knock-on effect on their mental health. A challenge to change how our society treats and values one another.

Book excerpt: Nearly everyone knows someone on the autism spectrum, whether it's a niece or nephew, a student in their classroom, a coworker, or a sibling, spouse, or child. One in 59 children is diagnosed with autism, according to the CDC, and autism is reported across racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Yet most of what people think they know about autism is wrong. On the Spectrum debunks myths with a realistic yet hope-filled deep dive into the heart, mind, and life of a Christian. Daniel Bowman, a novelist, poet, and professor, received an autism diagnosis at age thirty-five after experiencing a time of crisis in his personal and professional life. For him, the diagnosis shed light on his experience in a new, life-giving way. In this captivating book, Bowman reveals new insights into autism, relationships, faith, and the gift of neurodiversity. Rather than viewing autism as a deficiency, Bowman teaches readers--through stories of his heartbreaks and triumphs--authentic ways to love their neighbors as themselves, including their autistic neighbors who are fearfully and wonderfully, if differently, made.
