Book Synopsis The Old French Chronicle of Morea by : Anne Van Arsdall
Download or read book The Old French Chronicle of Morea written by Anne Van Arsdall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous Byzantine and Western sources describing the events of the Fourth Crusade have now been translated into English. However, the same is not true for material on Frankish Greece, despite this region’s importance to late medieval crusading. The Chronicle of Morea is the key source for the history of the Frankish states established in Greece after the conquest of Constantinople in 1204 and their relations with the reviving Byzantine Empire during the 13th century. It is also an important source for the growth of the Venetian maritime empire. Most of the action centers on the Peloponnesus, then called Achaia or Morea, where crusaders William of Champlitte and Geoffrey of Villehardouin (nephew of the famous chronicler) established a principality and the Villehardouins a dynasty. Preserved in a unique fourteenth-century manuscript, the Old French version of the Chronicle of Morea is a contemporary account of Frankish feudal life transposed onto foreign soil. It describes clashes, conquests, and ransoms between the Franks and Byzantines, as well as their alliances and arranged marriages. A rich source, the Chronicle of Morea brims with anecdotes giving insight into the operation of feudal justice, the role of noble women in feudal society, the practice of chivalry, and the conduct of warfare. Versions of the Chronicle exist in Aragonese, Greek, and Italian, as well as in Old French. However, this is the first translation into English or any other modern language of the Old French text, thus opening its content to a wider audience.

Book Synopsis Tales of Vice and Virtue by : Adrian Tudor
Download or read book Tales of Vice and Virtue written by Adrian Tudor and published by Brill. This book was released on 2005 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Here is presented for the first time a medieval text, the first Old French Vie des Peres. The Vie des Peres is a collective text comprising three branches and, at its fullest, over seventy individually enclosed pious tales and miracles. The first Vie - the first forty-one or forty-two tales - dates from the first third of the thirteenth century. It is a vitally significant, but hitherto neglected, part of the Old French canon. The tales are well written and offer glimpses of thirteenth-century life and spirituality." "The Vie des Peres will interest scholars engaged in the study of vernacular literature, codicology, lexicography, art history, theology and philology. Tales of Vice and Virtue is the first sustained analysis of the entire first Vie des Peres. It is a book which provides readers new to the text with detailed commentaries, offers abundant intertextual information for romance philologists, and suggests many new areas for further research."--Page de 4

Book Synopsis Chronicles of the Crusades by : Jean de Joinville
Download or read book Chronicles of the Crusades written by Jean de Joinville and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-03-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two famous, firsthand accounts of the holy war in the Middle Ages translated by Caroline Smith Originally composed in Old French, the two chronicles brought together here offer some of the most vivid and reliable accounts of the Crusades from a Western perspective. Villehardouin's Conquest of Constantinople, distinguished by its simplicity and lucidity, recounts the controversial Fourth Crusade, which descended into an all-out attack on the E astern Christians of Byzantium. In Life of Saint Louis, Joinville draws on his close attachment to King Louis IX of France to recall his campaigning in the Holy Land. Together these narratives comprise a fascinating window on events that, for all their remoteness, offer startling similarities to our own age. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines.
