The Hebrew lore offers a rich and interesting field for supplementary reading. Its simplicity renders it desirable in very low grades as well as in grades more advanced. No attempt has been made to explain the meaning of any incident or to attach a moral to any story, but rather this has been-carefully avoided as a great error. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Hebrew Stories and Their Modern Interpretation The purpose Oi this book is to examine some of the varied and interesting narratives of the Old Testament in the light of modern study, with a view to discovering their original significance and showing their relations to other parts of this great literature. It is quite natural in the atmosphere of our time that the most prominent and attractive feature should be the utterances of the great prophets, the oracles of the men who did so much to lift religion to a higher moral plane and make it a spiritual rather than a magical power. It is said that prophecy is the heart of the Old Testament, and that statement is true enough, if we remember that the heart, though a central and vital Organ, is related to all other parts of the body it receives the life-blood and sends it forth again in purer, stronger forms. We will find prophetic ideas in earlier stories just as we can trace the influence Of prophecy in later history and law. We are concerned with a movement which, when it once began, was continuous and all its parts were woven into a living whole. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Story of the Hebrew People T was a spring day many hundred years ago, when the people of Israel lived in Palestine, and Saul was their king. Tired, hot, and dusty, the laborers toiled from terrace to terrace up the hill, to the gate of the little walled city of Bethlehem, men and boys, women and girls. The gate stood wide open, and a brilliant sun set made the strong watch-towers that flanked it on either side shine as if burnished with gold. A beauti ful golden light hung over the gardens and fruit trees that spread close to the walls on every side, and the distant olive groves looked almost black against the background of fire. Overhead the sky was very blue. The people were coming in from their work in the fields and vineyards, driving cows and goats before them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Hebrew Story: Its Historical Background These lectures deal, first, with the origin of the books in which these stories are contained. What is their date in their present form, how and when were they composed and from what source did the writers draw their material? Secondly: What is the nature of that material? How much of it is derived from foreign myths and legends, whether Babylonian or Canaanitic? How did the Hebrews come into possession of this material? Thirdly What peculiarly Hebrew material, if any, exists in these stories? How much of that material is his torical and in what sense? What evidence does it give, not only of the ancestry and political devel opment, but still more of the religion and religious development of the Hebrews in the early period? Fourthly: What is the religious value to us of the present day of these stories and the books in which they are contained? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Life and Times Most histories have been histories of kings and em perors. The daily life of the common people - their joys and sorrows, their hopes, achievements, and ideals - has been buried in oblivion. The historical narratives of the Bible are, indeed, to a' great extent an exception to this rule. They tell us much about the everyday life of peasants and slaves. The Bible's Chief heroes were not kings nor nobles. Its supreme Hero was a peasant workingman. But we have not always studied the Bible from this point Of view. In this course we shall try to reconstruct for ourselves the story of the Hebrew people as an account of Hebrew Shepherds, farmers, and such like: what oppressions they endured; how they were de livered; and above all what ideals of righteousness and truth and mercy they cherished, and how they came to think and feel about God. It makes little difierence to us what particular idler at any particular time sat in the palace at Jerusalem sending forth tax-collectors to raise funds for his luxuries. It is of very great interest and concern to us if there were daughters like Ruth in the barley fields of Bethlehem, if shepherds tended their flocks in that same country who were so fine in heart and simple in faith that to them or their children visions of angels might appear telling Of a Saviour of the world. On such as these, in this study, let us as far as possible fix our attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The land was fertile, and nobody had ever entertained an idea that bad weather might some year affect the crops and cause a scarcity of grain. They took no precautions to lay in stocks of wheat, and so when one summer there was a great lack of rain and the fields were parched, the winter that followed was marked by suffer ing. The kingdom was faced by famine, and the people did not like it. They did not know what to do, and when they appealed to the king, he could not help them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Tales: Selected and Translated From the Writings of the Ancient Hebrew Sages IN 1826 a little book appeared in London which immediately attracted attention. It was neatly printed, in splendid, large type, making it by far the most attractive output of the Jewish press of that period. Intrinsically, too, it represented the flowering of Hebrew literature in England. Indeed, no other Eng lish work on a Jewish subject, with the pos sible exception of Emanuel Deutsch's memor able essay on The Talmud - published ten decades later, in The Quarterly Review - was so favorably received. Book excerpt: The rise of printing had major effects on culture and society in the early modern period, and the presence of this new technology—and the relatively rapid embrace of it among early modern Jews—certainly had an effect on many aspects of Jewish culture. One major change that print seems to have brought to the Jewish communities of Christian Europe, particularly in Italy, was greater interaction between Jews and Christians in the production and dissemination of books. Starting in the early sixteenth century, the locus of production for Jewish books in many places in Italy was in Christian-owned print shops, with Jews and Christians collaborating on the editorial and technical processes of book production. As this Jewish-Christian collaboration often took place under conditions of control by Christians (for example, the involvement of Christian typesetters and printers, expurgation and censorship of Hebrew texts, and state control of Hebrew printing), its study opens up an important set of questions about the role that Christians played in shaping Jewish culture. Presenting new research by an international group of scholars, this book represents a step toward a fuller understanding of Jewish book history. Individual essays focus on a range of issues related to the production and dissemination of Hebrew books as well as their audiences. Topics include the activities of scribes and printers, the creation of new types of literature and the transformation of canonical works in the era of print, the external and internal censorship of Hebrew books, and the reading interests of Jews. An introduction summarizes the state of scholarship in the field and offers an overview of the transition from manuscript to print in this period.

I have principally followed Gesenius; and the later chapters of the Work, especially those which treat of the 'irregular' or Weak' conjugations, are an abridged translation of that author's Grammar. These portions contain more information than will be at first necessary for the pupil; indeed, it will not be absolutely necessary that he should do more than commit to memory the short-paradigm' pres fixed to each chapter, and the accompanying Table of 'normal Forms, ' before he proceeds to translate the Exercise, with which the chapter concludes. When he meets with any variation from the forms he has committed to memory, he must refer to the fuller account of the conjugation that follows the Paradigm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Hebrew Reader This book is designed for students who wish to learn in a short time enough Hebrew to enable them to read one of the simple books of the Hebrew Bible. The writer makes no attempt to give an accurate knowledge of the details of Hebrew Grammar. He has in view those who will have no tutor, and seeks to make them familiar from the beginning with reading Hebrew as it is in a book of the Bible. The illustrations are all taken from the Book of Jonah. Four or five months of regular study will enable the reader to master this First Hebrew Reader. He will then be able to read fluently the Book of Jonah, and can proceed to the more systematic study of the language by using Professor A. B. Davidson's well-known Hebrew Grammar. The writer desires to offer his thanks to Dr. James Kennedy of the New College, Edinburgh, who read the proofs and made several helpful suggestions. Here we stand amongst the great progenitors of our race. Abram's birth was but two hundred and eighty years after the flood: a shorter period than has passed since Queen Elizabeth sat under a tree which is still alive in Hatfield Park, and saw the approach of the royal messenger who brought her, instead of the expected warrant to a dungeon and a scaffold, the tidings of her succession to the throne of England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extra-Biblical Sources for Hebrew and Jewish History The period covered by the term Hebrew and Jew ish History is taken, in this book, to extend from the beginning of Old Testament history down to the final destruction of the Jewish people as a nation in the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian. To the last part of the period pertain New Testament and Early Church history. No attempt has been made to deal with this subject. Our interest as to this period is confined to Jewish history. No serious student of Hebrew and Jewish history is willing to confine his reading to modern histories and text-books, excellent though they may be. He feels that he ought to go back of them to the original sources from which they are drawn. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
