Le materie inqueste carte trattate furono da me allora riguardate come semplice introduzione alla Storia mo derna ma compiuta la stampa del quinto volume nel metter mano alle addizioni e correzioni da me promesse mi avvidi del la necessità di ampliare siffatta introduzione e renderla propor zionata a' periodi seguenti. Lmperocche parvemi sconveniente che de' cinque periodi ne' quali ho divisa la Storia della medicina in Italia. Ne venissero compresi tre in un tomo di discreta mole; ment: e i due altri periodi erano trattati più distesamente in quat tro tomi assai più voluminosi. Ecco perchè ho creduto di rifare il primo tomo per intero non però con la estensione deglialtri, ma tale almeno che comprenda i fatti principali col nesso neces sario per bene intendere lo spirito della medicina in que' tempi remoti. E però desiderando unicamente di presentare al pubblico compatimento un lavoro per quanto per me è possibile me no imperfetto non ho guardato a Spese 0 a fatica, e riunite nel corpo dell'opera le addizioni e le amplizioni già preparate, lo con segno per intero alla stampa. Questo volume quindi è il solo ri fatto della prima edizione, e comparisce come parte di essa; men tre per i volumi seguenti le addiziouie le correzioni verranno pub blicate a parte e successivamente.
