La "Storia critica di Gesù Cristo o analisi ragionata dei vangeli" è solo parzialmente frutto della mano del barone d'Holbach. Infatti il filosofo illuminista nella fase che va dalle primissime pubblicazioni in forma anonima e fino a questo testo che precede solo di qualche mese la pubblicazione del suo lavoro capitale "Sistema della natura" (1770), è dedito, unitamente a quella "coterie d'Holbachique" di cui si lamenterà Jean-Jacques Rousseau nelle "Confessioni", a un intenso lavoro di rifacimento, annotazione, interpolazione di lavori altrui, prevalentemente di traduzioni di testi di deisti inglesi, e, come in questo caso, "saccheggiando" il manoscritto di un certo "Salvador" - sedicente ebreo d'ispirazione spinoziana -, la cui unica copia giace presso la Staatsbibliothek di Berlino.La "Storia critica di Gesù Cristo" che qui si propone al lettore di lingua italiana è una delle prime "vite" di Gesù redatte in Occidente in età moderna e in ambiente illuminista e precede di qualche anno il lavoro analogo, anche nell'ispirazione incredula di fondo, condotto da Hermann Samuel Reimarus (1694-1768). Chi ha posto attenzione a questo ambito di studi sa che si suole indicare proprio in Reimarus l'iniziatore della prima ricerca su Gesù storico. L'umanista tedesco non pubblicò tuttavia i risultati delle proprie ricerche che videro la luce per opera di Lessing soltanto tra 1774 e il 1778 col titolo "Frammenti dell'Anonimo di Wolfenbüttel". Con questo libro di d'Holbach, che si rammenta è del 1770, ma in cantiere nell'officina holbachiana da quasi un decennio, si ha qualche ragione di credere che l'avvio di tale ricerca sul Gesù storico vada retrodatata di qualche anno e che alla primazia di Reimarus vada associato il nome del barone d'Holbach.

This book discusses in detail the theories developed and the individual findings obtained. In contrast with earlier historiographical trends it denies that the new approach originated entirely from German Romanticism, and highlights a form of continuity with the eighteenth century, while stressing that a deliberate break took place round the 1830s. By the end of the century the results of comparative and historical linguistics had been generally accepted, but it soon became clear that a historical approach could not by itself solve all questions that it raised. At this point the new interest in description and theory which characterizes the twentieth century began to gain prominence.

The translation will be useful to undergraduate and graduate students whereas the introduction and commentary will be of interest to scholars in ecclesiastical history, historical liturgy, forming Judaism and Jewish-Christian relations as well as Syriac studies. The author, Alistair Stewart-Sykes, is well-known in the field having produced the first critical text for over a century of the Apostolic church order and the first full-length commentary on the Apostolic tradition.

Book excerpt: This important work challenges an entrenched scholarly consensus, that at the beginning it was inspired leaders - not ordained officers - who dominated the church. James Burtchaell illustrates that the traditional argument on behalf of clerical authority had read history backwards, and found the apostles to be the first bishops. In this study, Burtchaell reads history forwards, and demonstrates that first century Jews knew only one form of community organization, that of the synagogue. The three-level structure of offices in the synagogue - president, elders, and assistant - emerges, in the author's estimation, as the most plausible antecedent for the Christian offices which stand forth clearly in the second century. Burtchaell's conclusion is that ordained office is a foundational element in Christianity, but that, while the officers presided from the first, they rarely led. Thus, while Jesus' brother James presided as the ordained chief of the mother church in Jerusalem, it was Peter - Jesus' inspired veteran disciple - whose voice carried most authority. This revisionist historical account of Christian origins creatively subverts the established positions on church order, and thus opens up the arguments to new and larger conclusions.
