Book Synopsis British Steam Military Connections: London, Midland and Scottish Railway Steam Locomotives by : Keith Langston
Download or read book British Steam Military Connections: London, Midland and Scottish Railway Steam Locomotives written by Keith Langston and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2019-08-30 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This British Railways history explores the long-held tradition of naming steam locomotives in honor of the military. The naming of steam locomotives was a beloved British tradition since the first railway locomotives appeared in 1804. Many of the names were chosen in honor of military personnel, regiments, squadrons, naval vessels, aircraft, battles, and associated historic events. This volume looks specifically at the steam locomotives with military-inspired names that were built by the London & North Eastern Railway, which joined the British Railways stock in 1948. A large number of the company’s Jubilee class locomotives were given names with a military connection, as were a small number of Black Five class engines. Famously the majority of the much-admired Royal Scot class of engines carried names associated with the military in general and regimental names in particular. Many of the nameplates were adorned with ornate crests and badges. Long after the demise of mainline steam, rescued nameplates have become prized collectors’ items. This generously illustrated publication highlights the relevant steam locomotives and explains the origins and social history surrounding their military names.
Book Synopsis Steam in Scotland by : Kevin McCormack
Download or read book Steam in Scotland written by Kevin McCormack and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin McCormack has written a large number of transport books mainly using previously unpublished material, much of it sourced from the Online Transport Archive. This, his latest colour album, covers the railways of Scotland in steam days and concentrates as much as possible on depicting older types of locomotives. Consequently, this volume contains a large amount of rare 1950s colour images, often depicting areas of the Scottish railway system that were later closed or cut back during the Beeching era. The pictures in this book, were taken by enthusiasts who had the good fortune to be able to afford colour film, at a time when such luxuries, were very expensive, to the average enthusiast. All the photographers concerned, travelled far and wide in Scotland with their cameras, at a time, just before most of the lines closed, between 1953–1967. The result of all this effort, is a fine collection of very rare images, depicting a lost period of railway operation, in a beautiful and picturesque part of Britain.

Book Synopsis The Clayton Type 1: Bo-Bo Diesel-Electric Locomotives—British Railways Class 17 by : Anthony P. Sayer
Download or read book The Clayton Type 1: Bo-Bo Diesel-Electric Locomotives—British Railways Class 17 written by Anthony P. Sayer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 777 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This informative, illustrated guide to the British Railways locomotive series covers its full production lifespan, from 1962–1965. In the early 1960s, the Bo-Bo diesel-electric locomotive known as The Clayton was conceived as the new standard for British Railways, superseding other Type 1 classes. While the early classes suffered from poor driver visibility, the Claytons were highly successful and popular with operating crews. However, the largely untested high-speed, flat Paxman engines proved to be highly problematic. As a result, the Claytons were eventually withdrawn from BR service by December 1971. Anthony Sayer draws on considerable amounts of archive material to tell the full story of these ‘Standard Type 1’ locomotives and the issues surrounding their rise and fall. Further sources provide insights into the effort and money expended on the Claytons in a desperate attempt to improve their reliability. Supported by over 280 photographs and diagrams, dramatic new insights into this troubled class have been assembled for both historians and modelers alike.

Book Synopsis LONDON MIDLAND & SCOTTISH by : Bill Horsfall
Download or read book LONDON MIDLAND & SCOTTISH written by Bill Horsfall and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The London Midland & Scottish Railway, the LMS, Great Britain's largest from 1923-1947, has been extensively chronicled, but an update is long overdue. This unique work achieves it - and much more, combining detailed information scattered over books and magazines through decades, into a concise overview of what the company was about, and how it worked. Its analyses of locomotive-stock provide a further insight into methods of operation. The LMS pioneering work in both steam and diesel traction, plus that in other fields, put it ahead of Britain's other three railways, and for this it is here accorded the recognition it deserves. Fascinating, amusing, anecdotes give an insight into the staff's work-ethic and into contemporary social conditions. Key decisions by the LMS Executive to overcome the rivalry of its two largest constituents resulted in the appointment of an engineer who would create, not only modern, efficient locomotives and rolling-stock, but also an effective and unified design-team which would actually outlive the company and provide the spine of the four nationalized railways from 1948. The technical details, such as wheel notation (4-4-0 etc), boiler-pressures and valve-gears, are well within the ambit of railfans and complete the picture of this, Britain's greatest railway.
