Book Synopsis High Cost of Free Parking by : Donald Shoup
Download or read book High Cost of Free Parking written by Donald Shoup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-25 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Off-street parking requirements are devastating American cities. So says the author in this no-holds-barred treatise on the way parking should be. Free parking, the author argues, has contributed to auto dependence, rapid urban sprawl, extravagant energy use, and a host of other problems. Planners mandate free parking to alleviate congestion, but end up distorting transportation choices, debasing urban design, damaging the economy, and degrading the environment. Ubiquitous free parking helps explain why our cities sprawl on a scale fit more for cars than for people, and why American motor vehicles now consume one-eighth of the world's total oil production. But it doesn't have to be this way. The author proposes new ways for cities to regulate parking, namely, charge fair market prices for curb parking, use the resulting revenue to pay for services in the neighborhoods that generate it, and remove zoning requirements for off-street parking.

Book excerpt: Here are the few words I put together to try to convince you to buy this book. The words must be intriguing enough for you to relinquish some of your precious little green pieces of paper and exchange them for little white pieces of paper. There will be many more words on the white pieces (about eighty thousand) of paper than the green pieces (about sixty) of paper, which clearly makes it a good deal for you if you do the math. Of course, that is assuming you like the words on the white pieces of paper more than the words on the green pieces of paper, but you may not. I donOt know. If you like words that stimulate your mind, challenge your thinking, and are swimming in the deep end of symbolism and metaphorNwords that youOll think about, laugh about, and cry about after youOve set them downNthen you might like the words on the white pieces of paper better than the green.

Book excerpt: Published in 1993, this brave, original novel is considered to be the finest account ever written of the complexities of a transgendered existence. Woman or man? Thats the question that rages like a storm around Jess Goldberg, clouding her life and her identity. Growing up differently gendered in a blue--collar town in the 1950s, coming out as a butch in the bars and factories of the prefeminist 60s, deciding to pass as a man in order to survive when she is left without work or a community in the early 70s. This powerful, provocative and deeply moving novel sees Jess coming full circle, she learns to accept the complexities of being a transgendered person in a world demanding simple explanations: a he-she emerging whole, weathering the turbulence.
Book Synopsis The High Cost of Free Parking by : Donald Shoup
Download or read book The High Cost of Free Parking written by Donald Shoup and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 808 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the American Planning Association’s most popular and influential books is finally in paperback, with a new preface from the author on how thinking about parking has changed since this book was first published. In this no-holds-barred treatise, Donald Shoup argues that free parking has contributed to auto dependence, rapid urban sprawl, extravagant energy use, and a host of other problems. Planners mandate free parking to alleviate congestion but end up distorting transportation choices, debasing urban design, damaging the economy, and degrading the environment. Ubiquitous free parking helps explain why our cities sprawl on a scale fit more for cars than for people, and why American motor vehicles now consume one-eighth of the world's total oil production. But it doesn't have to be this way. Shoup proposes new ways for cities to regulate parking – namely, charge fair market prices for curb parking, use the resulting revenue to pay for services in the neighborhoods that generate it, and remove zoning requirements for off-street parking. Such measures, according to the Yale-trained economist and UCLA planning professor, will make parking easier and driving less necessary. Join the swelling ranks of Shoupistas by picking up this book today. You'll never look at a parking spot the same way again.

This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few years the physics and technology of charged particle beams on which electron-positron linear colliders in the TeV region, storage rings from synchrotron radiation sources and Free Electron Lasers are based, has seen a remarkable development. The purpose of this series of schools is to address the physics and technology issues of this field, train young people and at the same time provide a forum for discussions on recent advances for scientists active in this field. The subjects chosen for this first course reflect the recent interest in TeV electron positron colliders, the possibility offered by Free Electron Lasers to power them and the developments in the production of high brightness electron beams.

Book Synopsis Scientific Assessment of High-Power Free-Electron Laser Technology by : National Research Council
Download or read book Scientific Assessment of High-Power Free-Electron Laser Technology written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a scientific assessment of free-electron-laser technology for naval applications. The charge from the Office of Naval Research was to assess whether the desired performance capabilities are achievable or whether fundamental limitations will prevent them from being realized. The present study identifies the highest-priority scientific and technical issues that must be resolved along the development path to achieve a megawatt-class free-electron laser. In accordance with the charge, the committee considered (and briefly describes) trade-offs between free-electron lasers and other types of lasers and weapon systems to show the advantages free-electron lasers offer over other types of systems for naval applications as well as their drawbacks. The primary advantages of free-electron lasers are associated with their energy delivery at the speed of light, selectable wavelength, and all-electric nature, while the trade-offs for free-electron lasers are their size, complexity, and relative robustness. Also, Despite the significant technical progress made in the development of high-average-power free-electron lasers, difficult technical challenges remain to be addressed in order to advance from present capability to megawatt-class power levels.
