Download or read book Stoke-on-Trent written by Alan Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stoke-on-Trent was the name given to the amalgamation of six famous Potteries towns, the other five being Burslem, Fenton, Hanley, Longton and Tunstall. This book deals with the entire City, illustrating its wide variety of industries and the way of life of the people in the past. The world-wide reputation of Stoke was secured by the products of the pottery manufacturers. The innovations of men like Josiah Wedgwood, Josiah Spode and the Adams family - who had been making pots since the 15th century - built up a world-beating industry. The author vividly records much of the characteristic Potteries scene, of bottle-kilns, pit-heads and workers' cottages; and of the workers themselves, as they earned their living or enjoyed their recreations. Arnold Bennett, the City's literary giant, would have loved this book.
Download or read book Stoke Field written by David Baldwin and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2006-09-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Battle of Stoke, the last and most neglected armed clash of the Wars of the Roses, is one of history's great might-have-beens. The forces of the first Tudor king Henry VII confronted the rebel army of the pretender Lambert Simnel and his commander the Earl of Lincoln. Henry's victory over the Yorkists was decisive - it confirmed the crown to the House of Tudor for more than a century. David Baldwin's fascinating and meticulously researched study of the battle gives a keen insight into the opposing armies, their commanders, and the bloody dynastic politics of the period.

Download or read book Staffordshire Airfields Through Time written by Alec Brew and published by Through Time. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From some of the first ever airfields in Great Britain, through the municipal airports of Stoke, Walsall and Wolverhampton, to a total of eighteen RAF airfields in the Second World War, Staffordshire has always embraced aviation. Both Stoke and Wolverhampton were taken over for the use of Elementary Flying Training Schools, huge new airfields were built to house bomber Operational Training Units at Hixon and Lichfield, and to provide extra room for the Elementary Flying Training Schools, grass satellite airfields were built at Penkridge, Abbots Bromley and Battlestead Hill. Finally, Relief Landing Grounds for the storage of aircraft were created in the grounds of stately homes at Teddesley Park and Hoar Cross. Since the war the number has dwindled steadily, as agriculture reclaimed several and housing many others. Nowadays, only the ghosts of forgotten wings tell of the long lost heroes who flew at many of these airfields. In almost 200 photographs, this book places the aircraft, runways and buildings in the modern landscape, showing how they have been transformed.
