Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project investigates the reasons behind the reverse in trend of mergers and acquisition between developed and emerging countries. Developing countries once know to be the hunters are quickly turning into the hunted by emerging countries. Why are businesses in emerging markets investing increasingly in developed markets contrary to the historical trend is the question that is answered throughout the study. Particularly this thesis looks whether the reasons are because of the search of large markets and distribution channels, because of the excess in cash on their balance sheets, because of the need to acquire knowledge, because of the lookout for branding and good image or because of the search of safe investments. The twenty questionnaires that address the profile, motives for investment and the degree of investment were distributed to investors and businesses which match the profile of emerging market investors that invest in developed markets. The objective of these questionnaires is to collect the primary data which will be entered into SPSS and tested by linear regression analysis. The results obtained showed a positive relationship between the different motives and the degree of investment. Large markets and distribution channels, availability of cash, branding and good image, acquiring knowledge and the lookout for safe investments are the reasons leading emerging market businesses to increasingly invest in developed markets. The obtained results match and agree with the assumptions provided by the literature which assumes that as the motives for investing are stronger the degree of investing in developed markets increases.

Economic adjustment programs that combine macroeconomic stability and structural reforms are being implemented in several Arab countries. Policy-makers also are devoting more attention to improving the operation of domestic capital markets. To invest in this region now would be a far-sighted move by entering at a stage when the process is still under way. This book is one of very few readily available sources of reference on the region's stock and bond markets, presented in a concise and accessible form. It provides investors, policy-makers, analysts, bankers and other market participants with comprehensive information covering the top 10 Arab stock markets of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, UAE, Bahrain, Oman, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia. For each market, a historical background is given together with structure, listing and trading procedures, performance trends, financial indicators, sectoral analysis and underlying strengths and weaknesses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This paper attempts to identify Lebanon's greatest constraints to economic growth, following a growth diagnosis approach. It concludes that fiscal imbalances and barriers to entry are most binding on long-term growth. Macroeconomic imbalances and related perceived risks affect the nature of investment decisions in Lebanon, in favor of liquid instruments rather than longer-term productive investments. Further, many barriers to entry discourage agents from investing in a number of markets: legal impediments to competition, corruption, and a set of fiscal incentives favoring the allocation of resources to non-tradable sectors, where potential demand and investment opportunities are scarcer. In turn, using a steady-state computable general equilibrium model, the paper assesses the long-term growth impact of a selected set of policy reforms envisaged to lift such constraints. Results suggest that 1 to 2 percentage points of additional GDP growth per year could be gained through public expenditure reform, greater domestic competition, and tax harmonization.

Book excerpt: First published in 1988, Stock Markets of the Arab World provides a sound description and analysis of the stock market situation in Arab countries and an evaluation of previous attempts at the integration of capital markets. Foreign interest in the oil producing Arab countries has grown due to the accumulation of international reserves. Oil producers are looking for an alternative to their near-term investments in United States Securities through a diversification of their economies. This book argues that these countries could profitably invest these reserves through an integration of their securities markets. It also says that prospects of increased linkages among Arab domestic markets do exist. This is an interesting read for scholars and researchers of Middle East studies, Arab economy and economics in general.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the next decade, the economies of the Middle East will continue to be characterized by rapid growth, political turmoil, and increasing competitive intensity. International investors have the choice either to ignore the region all together and bypass business opportunities with great potential or to make a careful assessment of which countries to enter and how to enter them successfully. This book is the first of its kind to include the information, insights, and frameworks that are required to develop entry and growth strategies for the Middle East in the new turbulent environment following the global economic crisis and the Arab Spring. The first part of this book provides an in-depth analysis of the major developments that determine the business environment of different countries in the region, including a discussion of major social and economic developments, the impact of the rise in multinational companies from the Middle East, and the role played by institutions and political risk. The second part deals with each of the major decisions that a company planning to grow in the region needs to make: Which countries to enter? What is the right entry mode and ownership structure? How to choose between a greenfield operation and an acquisition? This book concludes with valuable and practical advice on the process of setting up operations in the Middle East.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. stock market has been transformed over the last twenty-five years. Once a market in which human beings traded at human speeds, it is now an electronic market pervaded by algorithmic trading, conducted at speeds nearing that of light. High-frequency traders participate in a large portion of all transactions, and a significant minority of all trade occurs on alternative trading systems known as “dark pools.” These developments have been widely criticized, but there is no consensus on the best regulatory response to these dramatic changes. The New Stock Market offers a comprehensive new look at how these markets work, how they fail, and how they should be regulated. Merritt B. Fox, Lawrence R. Glosten, and Gabriel V. Rauterberg describe stock markets’ institutions and regulatory architecture. They draw on the informational paradigm of microstructure economics to highlight the crucial role of information asymmetries and adverse selection in explaining market behavior, while examining a wide variety of developments in market practices and participants. The result is a compelling account of the stock market’s regulatory framework, fundamental institutions, and economic dynamics, combined with an assessment of its various controversies. The New Stock Market covers a wide range of issues including the practices of high-frequency traders, insider trading, manipulation, short selling, broker-dealer practices, and trading venue fees and rebates. The book illuminates both the existing regulatory structure of our equity trading markets and how we can improve it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the laws of the Middle East, defining the contours of a field of study that deserves to be called 'Middle Eastern law'. It introduces Middle Eastern law as a reflection of legal styles, many of which are shared by Islamic law and the laws of Christian and Jewish Near Eastern communities. It offers a detailed survey of the foundations of Middle Eastern Law, using court archives and an array of legal sources from the earliest records of Hammurabi to the massive compendia of law in the Islamic classical age through to the latest decisions of Middle Eastern high courts. It focuses on the way legislators and courts conceive of law and apply it in the Middle East. It builds on the author's extensive legal practice, with the aim of introducing the Middle Eastern law's main sources and concepts in a manner accessible to non-specialist legal scholars and practitioners alike. The book begins with an exploration of the depth and variety of Middle Eastern law, introducing the concepts of shari'a, fiqh, and qanun, (which all mean 'law'), and dwelling on Islamic law as the 'common law' of the Middle East. It provides a historical introduction to the contemporary Middle East, exploring political systems, constitutional law, judicial review, the laws of tort and obligations, commercial law (including Islamic banking, company law, capital markets, and commercial arbitration); and examines legislative reform in family law and the position of women in the legal system. The author considers the interaction between Islamic and Western laws and includes a bibliography designed for further research into the jurisdictions and themes explored throughout the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project first starts with the argument that the Lebanese financial sector is loosing grounds to other financial sectors in the region. A short presentation of the pros and cons of bank based systems and stock exchange based systems is then made; it also underlines the advantages of "balanced" systems. It is subsequently proven that the financial system in Lebanon is bank based and that develo ping the Beirut Stock Exchange is a necessity in order to have a more "balanced" one. A thorough comparative analysis then confirms the argument that the BSE is underdeveloped relative to neighboring stock exchanges. The basis for comparison will be other stock exchanges in the MENA region. Reasons for this underdevelopment are then studied. Both theoretical reasons and specific reasons to the BSE are found. Based on these reasons, a series of measures are then proposed for t he invigoration of the BSE. These measures mostly focus on the demand side, the supply side and the legal side to a certain extent. Other types of measures will also be proposed.
