Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the third in a series that documents the progression of a research effort aimed at developing stochastic vehicle mobility forecasting capabilities using the NATO Reference Mobility Model, edition II (NRMM II). The first report introduced the basic concepts and procedures. The second report described extensions of the procedures and demonstrated the application of these procedures to two historical mobility assessments that were influential in the procurement of some current U.S. Arm vehicles. The procedures described in these first two reports characterized the variability of the NRMM II empirical relationships using small-scale data sets and/or judgment. The intent was only to demonstrate the viability of the stochastic forecasting concepts. The effort reported in this third report was conducted to facilitate a more accurate characterization of the variability in the cross-country traction empirical relationships. The approach was to: (1) thoroughly examine the empirical relationships in terms of fundamental origins and implemented use, and (2) economically develop a database that will accurately characterize the variability of each relationship. As a result, databases were developed for 65 of the 70 NRMM II empirical relationships for vehicle traction on soil covered terrain, and these databases will facilitate at least a conjectural evaluation of the variability in all 70. When variability characterizations based on these new databases are implemented into the stochastic forecasting procedures, more accurate risk assessments will result. Another result of this research was the observation that some of the NRMM II traction relationships are in need of attention for model improvements. (KAR) P. 217-218.

Book excerpt: This report describes concepts and procedures that convert the NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM) from a deterministic code to a stochastic one. The motivation for the conversion is the opportunity being presented by advances in computer technology that can allow NRMM to be used in the fast-paced tactical environment of a battlefield. Appropriate components of a stochastic mobility forecast are identified as a speed map, a fingerprint, a mission-rating speed and a range for the mission-rating speed. The speed map and the mission-rating speed are the current NRMM products; the fingerprint and range are new components that describe the performance of NRMM when its data contain errors. Quantification of error performance becomes very important to mobility planning in a tactical setting. The procedures are illustrated by means of a comprehensive and robust example involving four vehicles, four terrain maps and two scenarios. The procedures are somewhat preliminary in the sense that alternative implementations are possible. Minimization of computational bottlenecks motivates the selections; other selections may be more appropriate in the future. Mathematical models; Sensitivity; Mobility; Vehicles, military.

Book excerpt: Mobility implementation in military models and simulations (M & S) currently is tailored primarily for specific models, leading to inconsistency between models. To assist decision-makers in analysis, acquisition, and training activities, it is necessary to provide and promote consistency among the models. The NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM), Version II, is the Army Battle Command, Simulation and Experimentation Directorate, standard for single vehicle ground movement representation. This report describes the development of an NRMM-based Standard Mobility (STNDMob) Application Programming Interface (API) as a means of readily achieving higher fidelity movement representation by incorporating terrain-limited speeds into M & S. As described in the report, the STNDMob API, Version 3, includes descriptions of two derivative models: the low-resolution (Level 1) and the medium-resolution (Level 2) capabilities of STNDMob within the tactical/entity fidelity. Each level of resolution has two degrees of fidelity. These levels of resolution are an implementation of the physical models for steady-state speed conditions. As a whole, STNDMob can be classified as a service module that provides vehicle speeds to a vehicle routing service/planner.

Military UGVs operate in complex off-road environments. Vehicle mobility forecasting plays an important role in understanding how and where a vehicle can operate. Traditional mobility forecasting has been done using an analytical model known as the NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM). There has been a push to extend the forecasting capabilities of NRMM by integrating more simulation methods. Simulation enables the repeated testing of UGVs in scenarios that would be difficult or dangerous to study in real world testing. To accurately capture UGV performance in simulation, the operating environment must be accurately modeled. Current widely used methods for generating forested virtual environments rely on random methods. These methods result in forests that can appear to be realistic when visually inspected but lack the appropriate distribution of different sizes of vegetation. The size and distribution of vegetation plays a major role in the ability of a vehicle to operate in a forested environment. Therefore, there is a need for alternative forest generation algorithms that generate more realistic virtual forests. To address this, a novel environment generation model based on forest ecology was implemented. This model accurately captures vegetation growth, disbursement, and competition. Simulated UGV self-driving performance for scenes generated using the ecological model was compared to performance for scenes generated using a widely adopted random model. Resulting speeds across each scene were averaged to predict a speed made good (SMG). Vehicle SMG predictions were made in NRMM using scene descriptions matching each of the random and ecological scenes. Using a continuous vegetation override function in simulation, SMG predictions for both methods were similar to the results of NRMM. However, the predicted speeds for scenes generated with the ecological model were different from the predicted speeds for scenes generated with the random model. When examining the distribution and frequency of different sizes of trees, ecological scenes more closely match the distribution and frequency of trees that are expected for real forested environments suggesting that predictions for speed in ecological scenes better represent potential speeds for real environments.

Book excerpt: The volume includes a set of selected papers extended and revised from the 2011 International Conference on Mechanical Engineering and Technology, held on London, UK, November 24-25, 2011. Mechanical engineering technology is the application of physical principles and current technological developments to the creation of useful machinery and operation design. Technologies such as solid models may be used as the basis for finite element analysis (FEA) and / or computational fluid dynamics (CFD) of the design. Through the application of computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), the models may also be used directly by software to create "instructions" for the manufacture of objects represented by the models, through computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining or other automated processes, without the need for intermediate drawings. This volume covers the subject areas of mechanical engineering and technology, and also covers interdisciplinary subject areas of computers, communications, control and automation. We hope that researchers, graduate students and other interested readers benefit scientifically from the book and also find it stimulating in the process.
