Book excerpt: We investigate the impact of order crossover on a periodic, order-up-to (R,S) inventory system where attaining a target service level is the focus. Order crossover, when orders arrive in a sequence different from that in which they were originally placed, is increasingly likely to occur in modern supply chains. One reason for this is the increasing pressure to focus on service performance, which we refer to as the “Amazon Service Effect”. Many service-oriented changes to order placement and fulfillment strategies will increase the chance of order crossover. While the majority of inventory control studies, including crossover-focused studies, tend to be cost-oriented, in practice many inventory systems are driven by service goals. To explore the use of crossover information in inventory policy decision-making we adopt the “effective lead-time” (ELT) approach (Hayya et al., 2008) to representing order lead-times where order crossover is present. We develop a hybrid discrete-event/continuous simulation model that utilizes a unique structure to provide a detailed representation of a stochastic inventory system and collect precise information about order crossover, effective lead-time, service performance, and related operating characteristics. We first address two crossover related assumptions that have not been directly addressed in the literature. We find that order crossover clearly impacts service-oriented inventory system performance (much as it does cost-oriented systems) and that a protection period of R ELT time units is appropriate for an R,S inventory policy under crossover. We then explore five methods of including ELT information into the process of determining the order-up-to level (S) for a periodic, order-up-to (R,S) inventory policy. We perform a full-factorial simulation study under various conditions of target service level, demand variance, and lead-time variance, for a total of 375 scenarios. We find the method used to include effective lead-time information into the decision significantly impacts service performance. We compare and contrast the different methods, discuss issues such as data requirements and the sources of error, and address the research and managerial implications of our findings.

First, it provides an introduction into fundamental structural and behavioral aspects of periodic review inventory systems. Second, it includes a comprehensive study on analytical and optimization aspects of a specific class of those systems. For the latter purpose, general solution methods for problems of inventory management in discrete time are described and developed along with highly specialized methods to solve very specific problems related to the model variants examined. The work is thus addressed to students and practitioners who seek a deeper understanding of managing inventories in discrete time as well as to software developers who require implementation aids on specific problems of inventory management.

Book excerpt: In this article, we investigate the (R, S) periodic review, order-up-to level inventory control system with stochastic demand and variable leadtimes. Variable leadtimes can lead to order crossover, in which some orders arrive out of sequence. Most theoretical studies of order-up-to inventory systems under variable leadtimes assume that crossovers do not occur and, in so doing, overestimate the standard deviation of the realized leadtime distribution and prescribe policies that can inflate inventory costs. We develop a new analytic model of the expected costs associated with this system, making use of a novel approximation of the realized (reduced) leadtime standard deviation resulting from order crossovers. Extensive experimentation through simulation shows that our model closely approximates the true expected cost and can be used to find values of R and S that provide an expected cost close to the minimum cost. Taking account of, as opposed to ignoring, crossovers leads, on average, to substantial improvements in accuracy and significant cost reductions. Our results are particularly useful for managers seeking to reduce inventory costs in supply chains with variable leadtimes. Full paper available at https://doi.org/10.1111/poms.12072.

Book excerpt: Optimal Control and Optimization of Stochastic Supply Chain Systems examines its subject the context of the presence of a variety of uncertainties. Numerous examples with intuitive illustrations and tables are provided, to demonstrate the structural characteristics of the optimal control policies in various stochastic supply chains and to show how to make use of these characteristics to construct easy-to-operate sub-optimal policies. In Part I, a general introduction to stochastic supply chain systems is provided. Analytical models for various stochastic supply chain systems are formulated and analysed in Part II. In Part III the structural knowledge of the optimal control policies obtained in Part II is utilized to construct easy-to-operate sub-optimal control policies for various stochastic supply chain systems accordingly. Finally, Part IV discusses the optimisation of threshold-type control policies and their robustness. A key feature of the book is its tying together of the complex analytical models produced by the requirements of operational practice, and the simple solutions needed for implementation. The analytical models and theoretical analysis propounded in this monograph will be of benefit to academic researchers and graduate students looking at logistics and supply chain management from standpoints in operations research or industrial, manufacturing, or control engineering. The practical tools and solutions and the qualitative insights into the ideas underlying functional supply chain systems will be of similar use to readers from more industrially-based backgrounds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses supply chain management, focusing on developments within modelling the dynamic behaviour of the supply chain. Aimed at postgraduate students, researchers and practitioners, this book provides an in-depth knowledge of the dynamics of supply chains. Business trends such as the globalisation process and the increase of competition across many industrial sectors have forced companies to concentrate on their core competences and to outsource those activities in which they do not excel. As a consequence, companies no longer produce and distribute their goods in isolation, but being part of a supply chain or supply network, i.e. a set of interrelated companies who ultimately deliver the goods and services to the final customer. Despite the prevalence of supply chains as the primary form of production and distribution, their performance can be seriously hampered by the complex dynamics resulting from the collaboration and coordination (or lack thereof) among their members. This book provides the reader with modelling tools to understand, analyse and improve the dynamic behaviour of supply chains. It assembles seminal works on supply chain models and recent developments on the topic in order to provide a comprehensive, unified vision of the field for researchers and practitioners who wish to grasp the challenges of supply chain management. Aside presenting the main elements, equations and performance indicators governing the dynamics of a supply chain, and the book addresses issues such as the effect of timely and accurately sharing the information across members, the influence of restrictions on the productive capacities of their members, or the impact of the variability of the lead times, among others. Furthermore, more complex supply chain structures such as non-serial supply networks or closed-loop supply chains are modelled and discussed. Relevant managerial insights regarding the causes of supply chain underperformance, as well as avenues to improve their efficiency can be extracted from the resulting models.

Book excerpt: A common assumption in inventory analysis is that replenishment orders arrive in the same sequence in which they were placed. In practice, however, a variety of factors may cause orders to arrive out of sequence, a phenomenon known as order crossover. This paper analyzes a periodic review inventory system for a single item with discrete variable demand and discrete variable and long lead-times (relative to the review period). Under such a scenario, multiple orders are simultaneously outstanding, and orders may arrive in a different sequence than placed. If such order crossover occurs, traditional inventory analysis overstates expected shortages and standard inventory control policies are no longer optimal. This paper discusses why orders may cross over in practice and investigates the implications of order crossover to inventory management policies. We investigate the cost performance of optimal policies under order crossover and also suggest approximate policies which are easier to compute and implement. Both the optimal and approximate policies take advantage of detailed real-time information about the status of pending orders and goods in transit, and hence in a majority of cases perform better than commonly used policies which do not incorporate such information.

Book excerpt: Common characteristics of inventory systems include uncertain demand and restrictions such as budgetary and storage space constraints. Several authors have examined budget constrained multi-item stochastic inventory systems controlled by continuous review policies without considering marginal review shortage costs. Existing models assume that purchasing costs are paid at the time an order is placed, which is not always the case since in some systems purchasing costs are paid when order arrive. In the latter case the maximum investment in inventory is random since the inventory level when an order arrives is a random variable. Hence payment of purchasing costs on delivery yields a stochastic budget constraint for inventory. In this model with mixture of back orders and lost sales, we assume that mean and variance of lead time demand are known but their probability distributions are unknown. After that, we apply the minimax distribution free procedure to find the minimum expected value of the random objective function with budget constraint. The random budget constraint is transformed to crisp budget constraint by chance-constraint technique.

Book excerpt: We consider a large scale multi-item periodic-review stochastic inventory system with Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) requirements on the total order size of all items. The item demands are stochastic and non-stationary. The retailer must decide at each time period whether and how many of each item to order from the supplier. The goal is to maximize the reward generated by satisfying the end customers demands while minimizing the costs of holding unsold inventory. We introduce a parameterized heuristic, the w-policy, that relies on our detailed analysis of the problem. We demonstrate the scalability of this heuristic up to ten thousand items, which is unmatched in the literature on the non-stationary demand version of the MOQ problem. The results of our numerical study on large scale real world data sets exhibit the efficiency of the w-policy in these challenging settings. Moreover, our numerical study shows that the w-policy performs at least as well as the state-of-the-art method (S,T) on the simplified problem when the demand is considered stationary, while being more robust in a real supply chain environment. Our results therefore indicate that the w-policy is more robust, has a larger scope of applicability, and is significantly more scalable than state of the art methods for multi-item stochastic inventory control with MOQ requirements.

This problem in general has an infinite dimensional state space and is hence intractable. We first obtain the set of minimal conditions for reducing such a system's state space to one-dimension and show how this reduction is done. Next, by modeling demand as a diffusion process, we reformulate the inventory control problem as an impulse control problem. We simplify the impulse control problem to a Quasi-Variation Inequality (QVI). Based on the QVI formulation, we obtain the optimality of the (s, S) policy and the limiting distribution of the inventory level. We also obtain the long run average cost of such an inventory system. Finally, we provide a method to solve the QVI formulation. Using a set of computational experiments, we show that significant losses are incurred in approximating a stochastic lead time system with a fixed lead time system, thereby highlighting the need for such stochastic lead time models. We also provide insights into the dependence of this value loss on various problem parameters.
