Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stiffened Suspension Bridges Common stiffened suspension bridges are often met with in the more distant parts of the British Empire, but the subject is usually omitted in the ordinary book on construction; doubtless on account of the fact that such bridges are usually semi-permanent structures. In some standard works the method of investigation is only indicated, while in some other minor works either only one case is dealt with or the subject is treated erroneously in one way or another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suspension Bridges, Arch Ribs and Cantilevers The assumption in the method of deflections that all moving load is uniformly distributed over the span in determining the expression for the work involved through vertical deflection, as a general procedure, is certain open to serious criticism, as will be indicated. A full consideration, therefore, of all the features of the two methods justifies the use of the Method of Least Werk, especially with the adjusted centre sag, as being at least equally accurate with the method of deflections, while its equations are certainly simpler and more easily workable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Renewal of Niagara Suspension Bridge, 1880 In spite of its success, however, it has been an object of constant solicitude to the traveling public. The frightful chasm that it spans would naturally excite the fears of most people, but this has been greatly enhanced by doubts as to the condition of the cables and their anchorage. The object of this Report is to show What the real condition of the cables and anchorage was, and also to indicate what has been done for their improvem ent, as well as that of other parts of the bridge. In order to explain this clearly, it is necessary to insert here the following general description of the structure as it was. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Suspension Bridges: Their Design, Construction and Erection This book has been planned to supply the needs of practicing engineers who may have problems in estimating, designing or constructing suspension bridges, and of students who wish to prepare themselves for work in this field. The aim has been to produce an up-to-date, practical handbook on the subject, distinguished by simplicity of treatment and convenience of application. In the first division, on Stresses in Suspension Bridges, the formulas have been corrected to conform, to modern practice, and reduced to their simplest and most convenient form for direct application by the designing engineer. The formulas are supplemented by curves for their expeditious solution, and by alternative graphical methods for determining stresses. The second division, on Types and Details of Construction, presents data and illustrations to assist the designing engineer in the selection of type of suspension bridge and in the determination of proportions, specifications, and details for the various elements of suspension construction. The third division, on Typical Design Computations, gives numerical examples of suspension designs of different types worked out by methods that have proved most efficient in the author's practice. The designing engineer will find here the formulas to be used in each successive step of the design, and the practical methods of applying them, with tabulations, graphs and short-cuts. The fourth division, on Erection of Suspension Bridges, describes and illustrates the successive stages in the erection of representative structures, from towers to trusses. The operations of stringing wire cables are presented in detail, with an outline of the computations for adjustment and control. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suspension Bridges and Cantilevers: Their Economics Proportions and Limiting Spans The term economic span will be used to designate the span at which the cost of a bridge would exceed the cap italized value of its usefulness to the builders. Although this is a problem of great practical significance, it does not lend itself to accurate treatment in any general manner owing to the large possible variations in local conditions, such as the magnitude and financial im portance of the traffic expected, the cost of real estate for land spans and approaches, and the difficulty encountered in locating suitable foundations. By adopting the most favorable assumptions for these varying conditions, a maximum value for the economic span may be established. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pneumatic Tower Foundations of the East River Suspension Bridge The following pages comprise chiefly the annual reports on the progress of the East River Suspension Bridge, from 1869 to 1872. Having heretofore appeared in newspaper form only, they are now presented as a connected narrative, giving a detailed account of the work from its inception to the present time, when the foundations are finished and the towers have already reached more than half their intended height. They present, a history of the successful completion of the two largest pneumatic foundations extant, as regards area of base, although surpassed in depth by those of St. Louis. Being the first application of timber caissons on a large scale, it may be of interest to state, that, at the time of writing, with already more than two-thirds of the ultimate pressure on the base of the Brooklyn tower, the total settlement has only been five-eighths of an inch, and of an uniform character all around. An introductory chapter is added, giving an outline of the general plan of the structure, its principal dimensions and location, as originally designed by the late John A. Roebling, and described by him in his preliminary report of 1867; together with the few modifications made since then. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Board of Engineers Upon New York and New Jersey Bridge, 1894 It must be remembered that the only stresses in the stiffening truss are those due to moving load. All dead weight being carried directly by the suspenders -to the cables. While this is the simplest explanation of the duties of the stiffening truss, it does not take into consideration all elements. The downward and upward deflection of the stiffening truss must be accompanied by corresponding changes in the shapes of the cables, but as these changes are in the direction in which the cables would move if no stiffening truss existed, it follows that the weight is not distributed equally among all the suspenders and the stiffening truss is relieved of resisting so much inequality as is taken by the cables. The elongation of the suspenders is also a slight element of disturbance, but not sufficient to be described here; an analysis of it will be found in Appendix E. Many amiable people have gradually formed the idea that this enterprise was a gift in benevolent preparation for posterity, and often inquire, with Sir Boyle Roche, what posterity has done for us. There are even some who have looked upon the grim towers as useless monuments of an im practicable scherrie. But through so many years of waiting, the work has crept slowly on. In all human probability, the van of the unend ing procession of passengers for whom it is designed will cross the completed structure in thirty days from the present time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bridges are great symbols of mankind’s conquest of space. They are a monument to his vision and determination, but these alone are not enough. An appreciation of the mathematical theories underlying bridge design is essential to resist the physical forces of nature and gravity. The object of this book is to explain firstly the nature of the problems associated with the building of bridges with steel as the basic material, and then the theories that are available to tackle them. The book covers: a technological history of the different types of iron and steel bridges the basic properties of steel loads on bridges from either natural or traffic-induced forces the process and aims of design based on limit state and statistical probability concepts buckling behaviour of various components and large-deflection behaviour of components with initial imperfections detailed guidance on the design of plate and box girder bridges together with some design examples The Second Edition includes a completely new chapter on the history and design of cable-stayed bridges, the various types of cable used for them and their method of construction, and it addresses many of the changes introduced in the latest version of the British Standard Design Code for steel bridges, BS 5400: Part 3:2000.
