Book excerpt: Three unique people Joshua of Nazareth, Linus Flavian, and Maria of Magdala are born in 5 B.C. during the appearance of an unusual star over the Middle East. Their lives will become intertwined through a series of events that will forever mark them. Around the time of their birth, superstition is rife. Intrigue between High Priests, the Herodians, and Rome, along with hope in an expanding world of greed and commerce, shape their differing destinies. Action takes the reader from Jerusalem and the hillsides of Galilee to the Jewish world of Alexandria, the trading centers of Petra and Palmyra, and the magnificence of Rome. Surrounded by rebellion, slavery, and their own adolescent dreams, the lives of Joshua, Linus, and Maria begin to unfold in a vast canvas covering the length and breadth of the Roman world. The first in the dramatic new series, The Magdala Trilogy, A Stars Legacy provides a fascinating commentary on the origins of Christianity that is both challenging and yet plausible, incorporating traditional beliefs, fictitious thoughts, and new interpretations. With vivid prose and compelling characters, A Stars Legacy offers a captivating glimpse into Biblical times and Christianitys core ideas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the era of Luke Skywalker’s legacy: the Jedi Master has unified the order into a cohesive group of powerful Jedi Knights. But as the new era begins, planetary interests threaten to disrupt this time of relative peace, and Luke is plagued with visions of an approaching darkness. Evil is rising again–out of the best intentions–and it looks as if the legacy of the Skywalkers may come full circle. Honor and duty will collide with friendship and blood ties as the Skywalker and Solo clans find themselves on opposing sides of an explosive conflict with potentially devastating repercussions for both families, for the Jedi order, and for the entire galaxy. When a mission to uncover an illegal missile factory on the planet Adumar ends in a violent ambush–from which Jedi Knight Jacen Solo and his protégé and cousin, Ben Skywalker, narrowly escape with their lives–it’s the most alarming evidence yet that sparks of political unrest are threatening to ignite into total rebellion. The governments of numerous worlds are chafing under the strict regulations of the Galactic Alliance, and diplomatic efforts to enforce compliance are failing. Fearing the worst, the Alliance readies a preemptive display of military might in a bid to bring the rogue worlds in line before an uprising erupts. The designated target of this exercise: planet Corellia–renowned for the brash independence and renegade spirit that have made its favorite son, Han Solo, a legend. Something of a rogue himself, Jacen is nevertheless duty bound as a Jedi to stand with his uncle, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, on the side of the Galactic Alliance. But when the wary Corellians launch a counterstrike, the Alliance’s show of force–and a secret mission to disable Corellia’s crucial Centerpoint Station–give way to an armed skirmish. Once the smoke clears, the battle lines are drawn. Now the specter of full-scale war looms between a growing cadre of defiant planets and the Galactic Alliance that some fear is becoming a new Empire. And even as both sides struggle to find a diplomatic solution, mysterious acts of treachery and sabotage threaten peace efforts at every turn. Determined to root out those behind the mayhem, Jacen follows a trail of cryptic clues to a dark rendezvous with the most shocking of revelations . . . while Luke grapples with something even more troubling: dream visions of a shadowy figure whose Force power and ruthlessness remind him of Darth Vader–a lethal enemy who strikes like a dark spirit on a mission of doom. An agent of evil who, if Luke’s visions come to pass, will bring untold pain to the Jedi Master . . . and to the entire galaxy. Features a bonus section following the novel that includes a primer on the Star Wars expanded universe, and over half a dozen excerpts from some of the most popular Star Wars books of the last thirty years!

Now, in the long and punishing battle between the defiant champions of the New Jedi Order and the juggernaut that is the Galactic Alliance, the endgame is finally at hand. With so much lost–and nothing less than the course of the future still at stake–there can be no turning back. No matter the consequences. The rebel cause is losing ground under the twin blows of Admiral Gilad Pellaeon’s assassination and the death of Mara Jade Skywalker. At the same time, having gained the support of the Imperial Remnant and its ruthlessly efficient forces, the Galactic Alliance, with the extraordinary power and dark brilliance of newly ascendant Sith Lord Darth Caedus at its helm, may be unstoppable. Tormented and torn between the call of duty and the thirst for vengeance, Luke has searched the Force and beheld an unspeakable vision of the galaxy enslaved under tyranny more monstrous than even Palpatine’s. Now it seems that the last, best hope lies in mobilizing the scattered Jedi for one decisive search-and-destroy mission. The objective: eliminate Darth Caedus. It’s a plan that will be as difficult and dangerous to execute as it is daring. For Caedus is a scion of both the Skywalker and Solo bloodlines whose command of the Force surpasses even that of his grandfather Darth Vader. There is only one who is bound by destiny to stand against him in what will surely be a duel to the death, only one with an outside chance of bringing down the dark lord who was once Jacen Solo. Failure is not an option. The furious final moments between power and peace are here, and whoever confronts Darth Caedus will decide the outcome–and the fate of those left standing.

Book excerpt: Jacobus Cornelius Kapteyn (1851-1922) of the University of Groningen was one of the foremost astronomers of his time, resulting in a leading role internationally of Dutch astronomy throughout the twentieth century. This volume, which is the proceedings of a special `legacy' symposium at the celebration of the 385th anniversary of the University of Groningen, addresses Kapteyn's influence on the development of modern astronomy through studies of his pioneering work on statistical astronomy and the Structure of the Sidereal System, and his leadership in establishing international collaborations, in particular the Plan of Selected Areas. In addition to historical studies related to Kapteyn's person, work, international collaborations and organisational efforts, the volume discusses the influence of Kapteyn on the internationalisation of astronomy and on contemporary astronomy. It also provides an inventory of Kapteyn's correspondence.

Recruiting from all over the world, they begin to expand their fleet and build a federation to give humans a foothold in the galaxy. Thus the Terran Alliance is formed, led by Simon, Kitty, Gayle, and their new comrades. Everything is going according to planned as they construct more ships, but the governments of the world are vying for control of these technologies. To make matters worse, their second encounter with an alien species is not one of peace. The world’s leading experts on Herschel, discoverer of the planet Uranus, here offer their combined wisdom on many aspects of his life and astronomical research. Solar system topics include comets, Earth’s Moon, and the spurious moons of Uranus, all objects whose observation was pioneered by Herschel. The contributors examine his study of the structure of the Milky Way and offer an in-depth look at the development of the front view telescopes he built. The popular subject of extraterrestrial life is looked at from the point of view of both William Herschel and his son John, both of whom had an interest in the topic. William’s personal development through the educational system of the late 18th century is also explored, and the wide range of verse and satire in various languages associated with his discoveries is collected here for the first time. Hershel worked at a time of incredible discovery, and his work is still highly regarded in the field. Here it is given a thorough investigation, putting into perspective his path-breaking career.

Book excerpt: A wild jump into uncharted space saves the starship Satori and her crew from their near brush with death. With a badly damaged ship and injured crew, the planet with breathable air they find on the far side of their jump seems like a stroke of luck. But they quickly learn that they've only gone from one danger into another far greater threat. The planet they find is ruined, abandoned, and devastated by some long ago war. Was it once the home of the civilization that built the wormhole drive? What happened to them? As the crew begin their search for clues, they stumble across the remnants of a war a thousand years old and an enemy more terrifying than anything mankind has ever faced. Excerpt: "Oh," Beth said in a distracted voice. "Beth, what the heck is up with you?" Dan went beside her to see what she was looking at. She was watching a radar screen, showing the airspace around them. It was pretty easy to read. Satori was dead center on the screen, and everything in the air nearby showed up with a number next to it showing relative altitude. When he'd last looked at the screen, there was nothing except the occasional satellite passing overhead. That had changed. That had changed a lot. Something very large was flying into radar range, about thirty miles above them and coming down fast. As he watched, the object broke apart, smaller bits flying off. "Majel, what is it? Asteroid?" Dan asked. The larger object was still showing as about five hundred meters long and nearly half as wide. If it was a rock, it was going to make one hell of a crater, and they'd need to be long gone before it came down. "Negative," came the computer's answer. "Object is decelerating." This book is a heavily revised second edition of the original volume. The story length has been increased by about 20%, adding enormously more background to the characters and deepening of the personality of the world and crew. If you've already read the first edition, you won't need to read this version to catch up - but fans of the series are sure to enjoy this expanded and improved "Author's Preferred Edition"!

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics Ever since Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity burst upon the world in 1915 some of the most brilliant minds of our century have sought to decipher the mysteries bequeathed by that theory, a legacy so unthinkable in some respects that even Einstein himself rejected them. Which of these bizarre phenomena, if any, can really exist in our universe? Black holes, down which anything can fall but from which nothing can return; wormholes, short spacewarps connecting regions of the cosmos; singularities, where space and time are so violently warped that time ceases to exist and space becomes a kind of foam; gravitational waves, which carry symphonic accounts of collisions of black holes billions of years ago; and time machines, for traveling backward and forward in time. Kip Thorne, along with fellow theorists Stephen Hawking and Roger Penrose, a cadre of Russians, and earlier scientists such as Oppenheimer, Wheeler and Chandrasekhar, has been in the thick of the quest to secure answers. In this masterfully written and brilliantly informed work of scientific history and explanation, Dr. Thorne, a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and the Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics Emeritus at Caltech, leads his readers through an elegant, always human, tapestry of interlocking themes, coming finally to a uniquely informed answer to the great question: what principles control our universe and why do physicists think they know the things they think they know? Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time has been one of the greatest best-sellers in publishing history. Anyone who struggled with that book will find here a more slowly paced but equally mind-stretching experience, with the added fascination of a rich historical and human component. Winner of the Phi Beta Kappa Award in Science.

Book excerpt: The Fantastic Space Race Summary of the story: The amazing story of Mia, Ben, Emma, and Max, four Stardust Ville teens with big dreams, shows how powerful interest, friendship, and hard work can be. Mia's dream of becoming an astronaut and Ben's love of making things lead them on an amazing journey to explore space and find out more about themselves. After meeting the brave astronaut Captain Orion by chance, Mia and Ben are asked to take part in a fun space race. They join Team Stellar with their new friends Emma and Max and go on an exciting trip to fight against other young explorers from faraway worlds. Their trip is full of danger, tests of their knowledge, amazing scenery, alien species, and cosmic wonders. The team moves forward because of how determined they are, how well they work together, and how much they always support each other. As Team Stellar moves through the steps of the Space Race, their dreams become tied to a higher goal. They understand how important it is to protect the wonders of space and become advocates for space travel and the preservation of the universe. After Mia and Ben won the Space Race and became recognized astronauts and inventors, they kept learning and having fun. They work together on missions that break new ground to find new planets and solve riddles in space. Every time they do something new together, their relationship gets stronger. This shows how important it is to be together and share memories. Years later, Mia and Ben put on their own Stardust Ville Space Race. They teach young people what they've learned and encourage them to be innovators. People from all over the world come to the event every year to show off their skills and work together to overcome challenges. Team Stellar's teamwork and determination are mirrored in a group of kids from different backgrounds. Through their shared experiences, Mia and Ben spread a love of space flight, inspire the next generation, and make the Stardust Ville Space Race a symbol of curiosity, teamwork, and the fact that the universe is full of possibilities. Their adventure has left a mark on Stardust Ville and beyond that will never be forgotten. Their memory lives on in the hearts of people who want to be explorers, scientists, or big-dreaming visionaries. The story of Mia, Ben, Emma, and Max is a monument to the power of friendship, determination, and the pursuit of goals to change people's lives. It is also a testament to the wonders that await those who are brave enough to travel into the unknown. How the story started: Once upon a time, in a small town called Stardust Ville, Mia and Ben were close friends who were both very interested in and eager to learn more about the universe. Mia had always wanted to be an astronaut so she could travel space and discover new worlds. She looked up at the stars and imagined that she was weightless and floating among them. This made her eyes shine with wonder. She read books about space and learned facts about planets, galaxies, and the secrets that lie beyond Earth's atmosphere. Ben, on the other hand, was fascinated by how creation seemed to have so many options. His mind was full of ideas for new products and tools. From a young age, he liked to take things apart and put them back together, always trying to figure out how they worked. He dreamed of making things that would change the world and make everyone's life easier and more fun. Mia and Ben would play in their backyard for hours, making up stories about it being an alien world or a secret laboratory. In their backyard adventures, they would build cardboard spaceships and go on epic, made-up journeys through the world, meeting strange creatures along the way. Mia's desire to become an astronaut came from her interest in the unknown and her desire to learn more about it. She knew that space was the last frontier and that it was full of secrets and riches. She wanted to see the majestic beauty of faraway worlds, float in space with no gravity, and see for herself how grand the universe is. Mia's desire to become an astronaut grew stronger every day as she read books, watched movies, and listened to music about space. Ben, on the other hand, saw invention as a way to unlock the secrets of the world and share them with everyone. He thought that if he made things, he could connect the glory of space to people's everyday lives on Earth. Ben would spend hours in his room drawing and making models of his ideas, always trying to amaze and inspire other people. He wanted to be a creator because he wanted to push the limits of what was possible and leave a lasting mark on the world. As Mia and Ben talked about their plans, they realized that they were both interested in the same things. Mia knew that she would need new ideas and tools to explore space, and Ben knew that his ideas could reach new heights if they were used in the vast universe. They praised and helped each other, and they often worked together on projects that helped both of them reach their goals. Mia and Ben were doing their favorite thing, which was to look at the stars, on a nice day. They felt at home in Mia's garden, where they sat on a soft blanket and looked up at the night sky. As they looked up at the stars, they saw something that caught their attention. It was a shooting star; a brilliant light show that swept across the sky. The shooting star left behind a bright trail of dust that sparkled and moved in the moonlight. Mia's eyes became big with joy as she pointed to what she saw. "Wow, that shooting star looks so magical!" she said with a tone of surprise and awe. Ben, who was just as amazed, nodded in agreement and couldn't take his eyes off the beautiful scene. They watched as the shooting star moved across the sky, leaving a bright trail that filled the night with a beautiful, magical light. Mia and Ben couldn't help but wonder if this shooting star was more than what it seemed to be. People thought that it might have a secret or be sending a word from another world. Mia and Ben agreed to go on a mission to figure out what was going on with the shooting star because they both liked to try new things. They put a notebook, a flashlight, and a small lens in their bags so they could follow the mysterious guest's trail and see what it led to. Mia and Ben followed the glittering path into the trees around them. They were led by the light that seemed to be calling them on. Every step was full of excitement and fear, and their hearts were pounding with excitement and fear. What will you find at the end of this interesting trip? As they continued their search, the sparkles led them to an area where the moonlight was soft and comforting. In the middle, a strange thing stood in the middle of an ethereal glow. It was a small disk that glowed and hummed in a way that seemed to connect with their souls. Mia cautiously walked up to the mysterious object, her eyes wide with wonder and excitement. She reached out and put her fingers on the surface of the glowing sphere. To her surprise, the sphere answered by glowing with a warm light. It seemed like the shooting star chose Mia and Ben to tell what it knew. At that exact moment, the orb unfolded, revealing a holographic image of an old star map. Mia and Ben yelled, and their hearts were beating fast with excitement. The chart showed a series of faraway stars that made a path to Star Haven, a mythical paradise in the sky. Mia and Ben promised that they would go on a great adventure to follow the star map and find the magical Star refuge. Their hearts were full of courage and determination. They knew that this adventure would be different from anything else they had done before, but they were excited to face the unknown and find out more about the world. Mia and Ben didn't know that their lives were about to change for the rest of their lives. The shooting star gave them a once-in-a-lifetime chance to go on a journey through space that was full of fascinating finds and thrilling encounters. They went out into the night, their hearts filled with the magic of the universe. The orb and the trail of sparkles led them. Just as Mia and Ben made their wish on the shooting star, the mood in Stardust Ville changed. A rumbling sound filled the air, and then an old, rusty rocket ship fell from the sky and landed with a thud in the middle of the main area in Stardust Ville. As the rocket landed, dust and debris flew everywhere, showing a slowly opening door. A figure came out wearing a spacesuit with badges and patches all over it. Captain Orion was there. He was a great scientist who was known for being brave and adventurous. His eyes were bright from the many space missions he had been on, and his presence was filled with awe-inspiring power. When Mia and Ben saw that they were in the same room as their hero, their jaws dropped. Captain Orion had a good name, and people had always praised how brave and determined he was. It was more than they could have ever imagined seeing him standing in their small town. Captain Orion smiled at the stunned crowd as he greeted them. He spoke in a way that showed he was sure of himself and had a lot of experience. "Hello, people of Stardust Ville!" he shouted. "I'm here to tell you about an amazing Space Race between young explorers from different planets. The winners will get to visit Zephyria, a newly discovered planet." As word spread like flames, the whole town cheered. Mia and Ben were happy to see that their dreams of going to space were coming true. Captain Orion saw how excited they were and walked up to them with his eyes shining with interest. "You two seem eager for an adventure," Captain Orion said in a voice full of interest and encouragement. "Would you like to join the Space Race and represent the Stardust villa?" Mia and Ben enthusiastically said, "Yes!" This was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for them to make their dreams come true. Captain Orion said that Mia and Ben would need to put together a team of four people, each with a special skill, in order to fight in the Space Race. Their knowledge, ability to solve problems, and ability to work together would be tested through a number of challenges.
