This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative 2007 study, Sarah Tarlow shows how the archaeology of this period manifests a widespread and cross-cutting ethic of improvement. Theoretically informed and drawn from primary and secondary sources in a range of disciplines, the author considers agriculture and the rural environment, towns, and buildings such as working-class housing and institutions of reform. From bleach baths to window glass, rubbish pits to tea wares, the material culture of the period reflects a particular set of values and aspirations. Tarlow examines the philosophical and historical background to the notion of improvement and demonstrates how this concept is a useful lens through which to examine the material culture of later historical Britain.

Book excerpt: The true story of a tycoon’s dashed dream: “A wonderful little book about what happens when righteous ambition meets stubborn culture.” —Scotland on Sunday Shortlisted for the Saltire Scottish Book of the Year Award In 1918, as the First World War was drawing to a close, the eminent industrialist Lord Leverhulme, whose name lives on today within the multinational company Unilever, bought—lock, stock and barrel—the Hebridean island of Lewis. His intention was to revolutionize the lives and environments of its thirty thousand people, and those of neighboring Harris, which he shortly added to his estate. For the next five years, a state of conflict reigned in the Hebrides. Island seamen and servicemen returned from the war to discover a new landlord whose declared aim was to uproot their identity as independent crofter/fishermen and turn them into tenured wage-owners. They fought back, and this is the story of that fight. The confrontation resulted in riot and land seizure and imprisonment for the islanders and the ultimate defeat for one of the most powerful men of his day. The Soap Man paints a beguiling portrait of the driven figure of Lord Leverhulme, but also looks for the first time at the infantry of his opposition: the men and women of Lewis and Harris who for long hard years fought the law, their landowner, local business opinion, and the media, to preserve the settled crofting population of their islands. “Magnificent.” —West Highland Free Press

Book excerpt: Riddoch on the Outer Hebrides is a thought-provoking commentary based on broadcaster Lesley Riddoch's cycle journey through a beautiful island chain facing seismic cultural and economic change. Her experience is described in a typically affectionate but hard-hitting style; with humour, anecdote and a growing sympathy for islanders tired of living at the margins but fearful of closer contact with mainland Scotland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worcester is the second largest city in the state of Massachusetts and was an industrial mill town—which made it the home to numerous mills, factories, three-deckers, and immigrants from different countries. Located in the central part of the state, this city thrives in harmony with its people where some of them are famous athletes, poets, actors, politicians and inventors. In this city, author Robert Pitchman was born and in his book, The Boy From Worcester, he honestly and unflinchingly relates his journey through life and survival. In this book, Pitchman reveals the story of his life with no holds barred. He is Worcester-born who, due to circumstances beyond his control and being an only child, was forced to survive on his own. At the age of six years old, his parents got divorced, which eventually led him to live in an orphanage just outside Worcester. When he was 15 years old, he went back to live with his mother and to survive by his own wits. In this city, he witnessed the various phases of development through the mills, factories, different enterprises, and cultural diversity—including the segregation that was apparent during that time. He had seen the city’s historical evolution, the success and fame of many individuals in various fields, and the invention of many useful things that are relevant to the world. This book is not an ordinary recounting of the author’s life of struggles growing up, it also highlights the people and culture of Worcester’s people, their unique norms and practices, the social interaction, and the numerous occurrences that help Pitchman shape his life. This was the city where he grew up, and became a man. Worcester is the city he loved, and, this is his story.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainstream, or more formally, neoclassical, economics claims to be a science. But as Michael Perelman makes clear in his latest book, nothing could be further from the truth. While a science must be rooted in material reality, mainstream economics ignores or distorts the most fundamental aspect of this reality: that the vast majority of people must, out of necessity, labor on behalf of others, transformed into nothing but a means to the end of maximum profits for their employers. The nature of the work we do and the conditions under which we do it profoundly shape our lives. And yet, both of these factors are peripheral to mainstream economics. By sweeping labor under the rug, mainstream economists hide the nature of capitalism, making it appear to be a system based upon equal exchange rather than exploitation inside every workplace. Perelman describes this illusion as the "invisible handcuffs" of capitalism and traces its roots back to Adam Smith and his contemporaries and their disdain for working people. He argues that far from being a basically fair system of exchanges regulated by the "invisible hand" of the market, capitalism handcuffs working men and women (and children too) through the very labor process itself. Neoclassical economics attempts to rationalize these handcuffs and tells workers that they are responsible for their own conditions. What we need to do instead, Perelman suggests, is eliminate the handcuffs through collective actions and build a society that we direct ourselves.
