Book excerpt: It was called the Steadfast sword. In truth it was never really given a name by its creator. It was a weapon fit for the gods, and yet the gods have never seen it. To the gods the Steadfast sword remains a mystery. What vexes the gods most was that there are rumors that humans have found and used the sword. Again the gods were disappointed. All they heard was, “It was here. The hero had used it, but when the task was done, the sword disappeared without a trace. The sword was being sought again by two competing forces. One group was made up of seasoned raiders and lead by the Iron Thegn. The warlord had plans for the sword. He would use its great power to conquer and enslave the world, then he would ascend to the realm of the gods. The other group was an odd paring of a priestess and a hunter. These two seek the sword to protect it. A thousand years have passed since anyone has seen the sword. The only source of information about the sword is a group called the wanderers.

Book Synopsis Memoirs of a Kamikaze by : Kazuo Odachi
Download or read book Memoirs of a Kamikaze written by Kazuo Odachi and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-15 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Independent Publisher Book Award (IPPY) Winner** An incredible, untold story of survival and acceptance that sheds light on one of the darkest chapters in Japanese history. This book tells the story of Kazuo Odachi who--in 1943, when he was just 16 years-old--joined the Imperial Japanese Navy to become a pilot. A year later, he was unknowingly assigned to the Kamikaze Special Attack Corps--a group of airmen whose mission was to sacrifice their lives by crashing planes into enemy ships. Their callsign was "ten dead, zero alive." By picking up Memoirs of a Kamikaze, readers will experience the hardships of fighter pilot training--dipping and diving and watching as other trainees crash into nearby mountainsides. They'll witness the psychological trauma of coming to terms with death before each mission, and breathe a sigh of relief with Odachi when his last mission is cut short by Japan's eventual surrender. They'll feel the anger at a government and society that swept so much of the sacrifice under the rug in its desperation to rebuild. Odachi's innate "samurai spirit" carried him through childhood, WWII and his eventual life as a kendo instructor, police officer and detective. His attention to detail, unwavering self-discipline and impenetrably strong mind were often the difference between life and death. Odachi, who is now well into his nineties, kept his Kamikaze past a secret for most of his life. Seven decades later, he agreed to sit for nearly seventy hours of interviews with the authors of this book--who know Odachi personally. He felt it was his responsibility to finally reveal the truth about the Kamikaze pilots: that they were unsuspecting teenagers and young men asked to do the bidding of superior officers who were never held to account. This book offers a new perspective on these infamous suicide pilots. It is not a chronicle of war, nor is it a collection of research papers compiled by scholars. It is a transcript of Odachi's words.
Book Synopsis The Vivekacudamani of Sankaracarya Bhagavatpada by : John Grimes
Download or read book The Vivekacudamani of Sankaracarya Bhagavatpada written by John Grimes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advaita Vedanta is one of the most important and widely studied schools of thought in Hindu religion and the Vivekacudamani is one of the most important texts in the Advaita tradition and the most popular philosophical work ascribed to the great Indian philosopher, Sankara. Sankara (c.650-700) is considered to be a giant among giants and probably the most venerated philosopher in India's long history. The Vivekacudamani is in the form of a dialogue between a preceptor (guru) and a pupil (sisya) expounding the quintessence of Advaita in which the pupil humbly approaches the preceptor and, having served the teacher selflessly, implores to be rescued from worldly existence (samsara). The guru promises to teach the way to liberation (moksa) which culminates in the ecstatic experience of one's own Self. This book presents an accessible translation of the entire text and also includes Upanisadic cross-referencing to most of its 580 verses, extensive notes, a lengthy Introduction, list of variant readings, an extensive bibliography, and an index to the verses. All those interested in Indian religion and philosophy, Hindu studies, or Sanskrit, will find this readable English translation of an Indian philosophical classic invaluable.

Book Synopsis Forging the Sword by : Benjamin Jensen
Download or read book Forging the Sword written by Benjamin Jensen and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As entrenched bureaucracies, military organizations might reasonably be expected to be especially resistant to reform and favor only limited, incremental adjustments. Yet, since 1945, the U.S. Army has rewritten its capstone doctrine manual, Operations, fourteen times. While some modifications have been incremental, collectively they reflect a significant evolution in how the Army approaches warfare—making the U.S. Army a crucial and unique case of a modern land power that is capable of change. So what accounts for this anomaly? What institutional processes have professional officers developed over time to escape bureaucracies' iron cage? Forging the Sword conducts a comparative historical process-tracing of doctrinal reform in the U.S. Army. The findings suggest that there are unaccounted-for institutional facilitators of change within military organizations. Thus, it argues that change in military organizations requires "incubators," designated subunits established outside the normal bureaucratic hierarchy, and "advocacy networks" championing new concepts. Incubators, ranging from special study groups to non-Title 10 war games and field exercises, provide a safe space for experimentation and the construction of new operational concepts. Advocacy networks then connect different constituents and inject them with concepts developed in incubators. This injection makes changes elites would have otherwise rejected a contagious narrative.
