Book excerpt: This report forms the introduction to a resource description and analysis of Fundy National Park. It proposes to place the management of the park in context for both researchers unfamiliar with the park and the region and for Parks Canada staff in search of background material on the park's natural resources. It reviews the goals of national parks in general and the Fundy park in particular; the degree of ecological integrity existing in the park; ecosystem management objectives; links between the park and partnerships in south-eastern New Brunswick (the Greater Fundy Ecosystem and the Fundy Model Forest), along with how they hope to benefit; and park and ecosystem management plans.

Book excerpt: Presents a checklist of the 634 moth species, in 14 selected families, identified from Fundy National Park and the immediately adjacent forests of the greater Fundy ecosystem. Species are arranged in the sequence of the most recent checklist (Hodges et al., 1983). All data are from light trap collections carried out over 1993-97. For each species, information provided includes number of successful trapping nights over that five-year period and the total number of individuals captured. Also included are the extreme flight dates for each species, summarized as the total number of days.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is an introduction to the results of a five-year co-operative study into the feasibility of using moths as biological indicators of ecosystem health in Fundy National Park, New Brunswick. The report describes the moth sampling methodology used, describes and maps the sampling site locations, and provides details of the floristic composition of the sites. Study results presented demonstrate the patterns of seasonal distributions of both individuals and species, and the pattern of species emergence throughout the year for each of four years at two of the sites. Based on the similarities in the patterns between and within sites and years, a protocol for conducting further moth surveys is also proposed. Appendices include tables showing vegetation species composition at the study sites and graphs showing numbers of individual moths and species observed in research traps.

It details their response to land-use change and management practices, intensified urbanization and roost disturbance and loss. Increasing interactions between humans and bats as a result of hunting, disease relationships, occupation of human dwellings, and conflict over fruit crops are explored in depth. Finally, contributors highlight the roles that taxonomy, conservation networks and conservation psychology have to play in conserving this imperilled but vital taxon. With over 1300 species, bats are the second largest order of mammals, yet as the Anthropocene dawns, bat populations around the world are in decline. Greater understanding of the anthropogenic drivers of this decline and exploration of possible mitigation measures are urgently needed if we are to retain global bat diversity in the coming decades. This book brings together teams of international experts to provide a global review of current understanding and recommend directions for future research and mitigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Atlantic coast of North America—commonly known as the Atlantic Coast—extends from Newfoundland and Labrador through the Maritime Provinces and the Northeastern United States south to Cape Hatteras. This North Atlantic region belongs to the sea. The maritime influence on climate, flora, and fauna is dominant — even far inland. Both on land and at sea, this region is where north meets south, where the great northern boreal forests intermingle with the southern coniferous-hardwood forests, and where the icy Labrador Current and the tropical Gulf Stream vie for supremacy and eventually mix. The Atlantic Coast draws upon the best and most up-to-date science on the ecology of the region as well as the author’s lifetime experience as a resident, biologist, and naturalist. The book explores the geological origins of the region, the two major forest realms, and the main freshwater and marine ecosystems, and describes the flora and fauna that characterize each habitat. It ends with a look at what has been lost and how the remaining natural heritage of the region might be conserved for the future.

Book excerpt: Our Landscape Heritage provides an overview of the history and ecological makeup of the landscapes of New Brunswick to help ecological seekers starting out with basic knowledge about geology, soils, climate, and vegetation, to better understand why plants and animals are today distributed as they are. Part I outlines the rationale and history of ecological land classification (ELC) in New Brunswick, and presents basic scientific concepts and facts that help the reader to interpret the information that follows. Part II, Portrait of New Brunswick Ecoregions and Ecodistricts presents a detailed look at the variety and distribution of ecosystems across the geographic expanse of New Brunswick. Each of the seven chapters of Part II provides a high level description of the ecoregion, followed by detailed descriptions of each ecodistrict within the ecoregion.--Includes text from document.
