Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Library of the Royal Statistical Society A catalogue of the Library of the Royal Statistical Society, arranged under authors' names, was published in 1884, and this was supplemented by a subject index in 1886. Since that time large additions have been made to the Library, and within the last two years an examination of the whole of the books has been carefully made with the view of eliminating those which do not come strictly within the scope of the Society. At the present time the number of books and separate publications in the Library is approximately The time has, therefore, come when the publication of a new catalogue is essential. The present catalogue, which comprises (with certain exceptions named below) all works included in the Library on December 31st, 1906, has been prepared on a plan differing slightly from that previously adopted, and has been arranged with the view of affording means of easy reference with due regard to economy of space. This book was released on 2006-05-25 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam War was fought in a jungle environment that provided cover to the enemy and made battlefield observations difficult, so military strategists used herbicides to remove foliage along key roads and waterways, defoliate areas surrounding enemy bases and supply and communications routes, and improve visibility in heavily canopied forests. The last three decades have seen an ongoing debate about the effects of this military use of herbicides and the potential adverse long-term health effects on those who may have been exposed to these herbicides. In response to these concerns, the Air Force Health Study (AFHS) was created to investigate the potential relationship between the herbicides used and the health problems of those exposed. Disposition of the Air Force Health Study assesses the scientific merit of the AFHS operations and procedures, and makes recommendations for improvement.
Book Synopsis A Modern Chinese Journey to the West by : Ulric Killion
Download or read book A Modern Chinese Journey to the West written by Ulric Killion and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book begins, and perhaps should end, with an excerpt from the writings of the late eminent Chinese scholar, Fung Yu-lan (or Feng Youlan) (1895-1990), who wrote: "The ancient Chinese culture is an inherent factor determining the Chinese style.". If the latter enunciation of Fung Yu-lan stirs one's interest in Chinese culture for the typical reasons, such as, an interest in ancient periods of China; romanticism, which focuses on the exotic and mysterious, for example, Zen Buddhism and Taoism; or simply as the source of exotic objets d'art, then all the better. Because for a typical Westerner bound in Western conventionalism and parochialism, engendering an understanding of the policies and practices of the People's Republic of China (China) necessitates understanding a modern China in light of Chinese traditional culture (or philosophy), or a China in antiquity. The consequence of Chinese traditional culture affects many political economy concerns of modern China, ranging from socio-economic, political, to international trade and other concerns. Indeed, philosophical antecedents influence modern Chinese policies and practices.

Download or read book Teaching Research Methods in the Social Sciences written by Mark Garner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can excellence in the teaching of research methods be encouraged and ensured? This question has become increasingly important following the adoption of research methodology as a core part of many postgraduate and undergraduate courses. There has, however, been little discussion about the aims and methods of teaching the subject. In this volume; a number of authors from a variety of countries and disciplines employ their knowledge and experience towards the development of a 'pedagogical culture' in research methods. Their aim is to establish the extent of common concerns and challenges and to demonstrate ways in which these are being met. Intended to provide both a stimulus and source materials for the development of a more substantial and systematic literature in the field, the book will be of great interest to all those teaching research methods courses within social science disciplines.
