Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to present an extensive analysis of the international evidence for the similarities of the consumption patterns of such controversial commodities as alcohol, tobacco and marijuana, using recent data from a number of developed and less developed countries over a number of years. The book also presents analysis of the consumption patterns of food in general and soft drinks in particular. In addition the book provides a detailed analysis of the consumption restrictions and regulations in place in various countries in relation to issues associated with taxation, availability, and marketing of these products. The book's focus is on rigorous empirical analysis and presents the estimates of demand elasticities of these five commodities across different countries. Such estimates are key inputs for government economic models that are used for the purpose of social policy analysis. Furthermore, the book presents hypothesis testing results on various demand theory hypotheses such as demand homogeneity and Slutsky symmetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substance Misuse - General Practice: The Integrative Approach. We define a drug (substance) as a chemical entity, self administered (non-medically) for its psychoactive effect. The effect usually includes a change in mood, arousal or perception, thinking (cognition) and/or behaviour. It may vary according to which drug is used, the amount used, the route of administration, the mixture of drugs used, the expectations of effect by the user, the setting of use and the personal characteristics of the user such as weight, gender and previous drug experience. Drugs can be classified according to their physiological effects: depressants, opioids, cannabinoids, stimulants and hallucinogens. In this chapter we briefly consider the more important drugs in most of the categories, and for each we consider the drug and its mode of action, use and clinical effects, and current medical and integrative treatments.

Book excerpt: Estimates indicate that as many as 1 in 4 Americans will experience a mental health problem or will misuse alcohol or drugs in their lifetimes. These disorders are among the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the United States, and they remain barriers to full participation in society in areas as basic as education, housing, and employment. Improving the lives of people with mental health and substance abuse disorders has been a priority in the United States for more than 50 years. The Community Mental Health Act of 1963 is considered a major turning point in America's efforts to improve behavioral healthcare. It ushered in an era of optimism and hope and laid the groundwork for the consumer movement and new models of recovery. The consumer movement gave voice to people with mental and substance use disorders and brought their perspectives and experience into national discussions about mental health. However over the same 50-year period, positive change in American public attitudes and beliefs about mental and substance use disorders has lagged behind these advances. Stigma is a complex social phenomenon based on a relationship between an attribute and a stereotype that assigns undesirable labels, qualities, and behaviors to a person with that attribute. Labeled individuals are then socially devalued, which leads to inequality and discrimination. This report contributes to national efforts to understand and change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination. Changing stigma in a lasting way will require coordinated efforts, which are based on the best possible evidence, supported at the national level with multiyear funding, and planned and implemented by an effective coalition of representative stakeholders. Ending Discrimination Against People with Mental and Substance Use Disorders: The Evidence for Stigma Change explores stigma and discrimination faced by individuals with mental or substance use disorders and recommends effective strategies for reducing stigma and encouraging people to seek treatment and other supportive services. It offers a set of conclusions and recommendations about successful stigma change strategies and the research needed to inform and evaluate these efforts in the United States.

Book excerpt: Tracing the international and Australian history of both licit and illicit drug use, this investigation combines the topic of drug use with analyses of political power, the rise of the market, and social issues. It examines the way in which drug consumption is regulated in the era of global free trade by first looking at the start of the opium-growing industry and the racist origins of drug laws. Providing a social history of drug use through the lens of international politics, market forces, medicine, and race, this discussion also considers the paradox of contemporary, white Australian identity and an Australia as a nation of people whose per capita drug consumption often equals and surpasses that of most other nations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much crime is committed in Australia? What sort of crime, where and by whom? What can we do to stop it? This book deals in facts and dispels myths. Don Weatherburn, Director of the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research, shows how policies are driven by the political need to manage public reactions, not to control and prevent crime. Law and Order in Australia informs public debate about crime in Australia by contrasting popular assumptions about crime and crime control with what is actually known to be true. The opening chapter sets the scene by asking how serious Australia's crime problems are. Weatherburn then offers a critique of the way Australian governments attempt to deal with Australia's crime problems. This is followed by the foundations for a discussion of what actually works in crime prevention and control by highlighting some basic facts about crime and offenders. The final chapters discuss what the evidence reveals about crime prevention and control and the key issues in crime prevention and control in Australia. Weatherburn clearly provides numerous ideas for better policies, ones that will actually work.

Developing cost-effective drug programs and policies require a sound knowledge of drug users and their characteristics and the relationship across drugs. Who are the drug users? Can demographic factors help towards predicting drug usage? What sub-population groups should be targeted for drug campaigns and educational programs? Can a drug policy aimed at discouraging the use of one drug likely to affect the use of other drugs which are its economic substitutes or complements? What are the implications of drug use? Policymakers and researchers in the area of health and social development would find this book very useful.

Twenty-six eminent contributors discuss the state and future of the field, balancing the practical concerns involved in gathering drug abuse data with the ethics of using the information. - Current thinking on pathways and etiology, as well as medical, psychological, and social sequelae of drug abuse - Proven, up-to-date methodologies for assessment - Challenges of gathering data from high-risk and other user populations - Sampling and application issues - Uses, sources, and limitations of treatment data - Analytical papers applying the methodologies to specific and global studies - The role of epidemiology studies in developing prevention strategies With this multifaceted approach to the subject, Epidemiology of Drug Abuse provides researchers and educators with a reference that sheds significant light on infrequently covered areas. In addition, its breadth and accessibility of coverage make it a teaching text suitable to courses in epidemiology, public health, and drug abuse.

This book was released on 2016-03-10 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental, neurological, and substance use disorders are common, highly disabling, and associated with significant premature mortality. The impact of these disorders on the social and economic well-being of individuals, families, and societies is large, growing, and underestimated. Despite this burden, these disorders have been systematically neglected, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, with pitifully small contributions to scaling up cost-effective prevention and treatment strategies. Systematically compiling the substantial existing knowledge to address this inequity is the central goal of this volume. This evidence-base can help policy makers in resource-constrained settings as they prioritize programs and interventions to address these disorders.
