Book excerpt: Excerpt from Negroes in the United States They indicate that between 11 and 16 per cent of the negro population have, or are believed by the enumera tors to have, some degree of white blood. The proportion of mulattoes to all negroes is lowest as a rule where the proportion of whites in the total population is lowest, and highest, as a rule, where the proportion of whites in the total population is highest. The proportion of mulattoes to all negroes is usually higher in cities of the great cotton growing states than it is in the districts outside of the cities. The facts have been set forth and analyzed in an attempt to arrive at understanding in a sympathetic but scientific manner, without suggestions as to how the knowledge should be used. Emphasis has been placed on isolating the factors involved and determining the trends occurring, with predictions based on the effects that are likely to eventuate from the Opera tion of the forces at work. It has also been the aim to avoid tech nical language and especially to eschew all jargon. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro's Progress in Fifty Years Will the ten million Negroes now in the United States continue to increase at the 100 per cent rate of the last 50 years? How long will they remain 75 per cent rural? Is the cityward tide affecting them equally with the white population? To what extent are they leaving the South and moving into the North? A moment's reflection will show that these are among the most vital questions confronting the serious minded people of our land. Increase of Negro Population According to the United States Census Bureau the increase of the Negro population was 120 per cent in the 50 years between 1860 and 1910. This population in 1860 was four and a half million (4,441,830). In 1910 the number had increased to practically ten million (9,827,763). It is interesting to note by way of comparison that the foreign-born population of the country was about two million in 1860 and thirteen and a third million in 1910. These two groups form a total of about 23 million people, or a fourth of our total population. In view of the many serious problems of social adjustment presented by each of these groups, it is quite significant that they should form such a large proportion of our population. Much interest has been aroused by the fact that the 1910 census showed an increase for the Negro population of only 11.2 per cent as against 18 per cent for 1900. This fact has strengthened the belief of those who have been giving periodic expression to their claim that the Negro is "dying out." Even a casual study of the question, however, shows that such a conclusion is not well founded. In the first place, an increase of 11.2 per cent is about equal to the natural increase of any of the European people. The 1911 census of the English people, for example, reported an increase by excess of births over deaths of 12.4 per cent. This rate for 1910 was only 11.6 per cent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negroes of Columbia, Missouri: A Concrete Study of the Race Problem The following monograph on the condition of the negroes of Columbia, Missouri, does not profess to be based upon complete statistical data. As these were impossible to obtain, it is rather a collection of impres sions received from personal observations, which while falling short of scientific accuracy, may nevertheless be considered trustworthy. Indeed, the general trust worthiness of the picture presented by the monograph would not be questioned by any intelligent resident of the community in which the study was made. The few statistics which have been obtained from official sources and through personal investigation confirm the impres sions received from general observation.
