Book excerpt: This edition of International Trade Outlook for Latin America and the Caribbean covers 2018 and is divided into three chapters. Chapter I analyses the impact of divergent global growth and trade tensions on trade in the region. Chapter II examines the share of Latin America and the Caribbean in global trade in minerals and metals. The region overall is a net exporter in this sector; however, given the typically low level of processing of its exports, it has the largest share in this category of primary products of all regions in the world. Finally, Chapter III examines whether cross-border e-commerce has the potential to galvanize and diversify exports from the region. Cross-border e-commerce refers to transactions for products and services that are ordered online, platform-enabled, or delivered online.

Book excerpt: This ECLAC annual report sets out and analyses the main foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. In the region, FDI inflows were up (by 13.2%) year on year for the first time in five years, at US$ 184.287 billion. This performance is explained by higher flows into just a few countries, however, mainly Brazil and Mexico. Moreover, it does not reflect equity investment, but higher inflows in the form of intercompany loans and, to a lesser extent, reinvestment of earnings. Manufactures and services were the sectors receiving most equity, although there was a slight rise in investment in natural resource sectors compared with 2018.

This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global trade performance in 2019 was the worst since the international financial crisis. This edition of International Trade Outlook for Latin America and the Caribbean analyses that performance, as well as the mounting trade tensions and their repercussions for the region’s own trade. The heavy slowdown in global trade is the result of the build-up of trade barriers since 2018, as well as longer-standing factors, including weaker global demand, increasing import substitution in some economies, the smaller share of Chinese production going for export, the shrinking of global value chains and the emergence of new technologies that impact the very nature of trade. Chapter II analyses how international trade could contribute more to environmental sustainability. Trade has both positive and negative impacts on the environment and the net balance of that effect is uncertain. The links between trade and the environment have become more visible since the 1990s; the increase in environment-related trade disputes testifies to this, as does the fact that environmental chapters are increasingly being written into trade agreements. Finally, the third chapter examines the situation regarding infrastructure and logistics, which are key to international trade and production. In conclusion, public policies on economic infrastructure concessions need to be re-examined, considering the crucial role played by the State in regulation, especially in overseeing competition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: What is the role of regional organizations in maintaining security across different parts of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC)? How did COVID-19 impact states in the region and what types of collective action have helped respond to public health emergencies? In what way is LAC environmental policy formulated and what broader lessons can be drawn for the Global South? This edited volume addresses these questions, revealing the reasons behind the successes and failures of LAC regional responses to collective challenges as well as their limitations and potential for future improvement. It contains 11 chapters, authored by 16 authoritative academics who employ methodologically-diverse perspectives. Each chapter provides insights that would be of interest to scholars, students and policy-makers working on the regional governance of LAC and the Global South. The contributions are thematically organised in three parts and produced with pragmatic considerations in mind, discussing existing and potential real solutions to pressing issues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2018 edition of the Economic Survey of Latin America and the Caribbean, its seventieth issue, consists of three parts. Part I outlines the region's economic performance in 2017 and analyses trends in the early months of 2018, as well as the outlook for the rest of the year. It examines the external and domestic factors that have influenced the region's economic performance, analyses the characteristics of economic growth, prices and the labour market, and draws attention to some of the macroeconomic policy challenges of the prevailing external conditions, amid mounting uncertainty stemming mainly from political factors. Part II of this edition, which has three chapters, analyses the dynamics of investment and its determinants, with a view to identifying the different variables on which public policy can act to influence the trajectory of investment. Part III contains notes relating to the economic performance of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean in 2017 and the first half of 2018, together with their respective statistical annexes.
