Book excerpt: The global trade performance in 2019 was the worst since the international financial crisis. This edition of International Trade Outlook for Latin America and the Caribbean analyses that performance, as well as the mounting trade tensions and their repercussions for the regions own trade. The heavy slowdown in global trade is the result of the build-up of trade barriers since 2018, as well as longer-standing factors, including weaker global demand, increasing import substitution in some economies, the smaller share of Chinese production going for export, the shrinking of global value chains and the emergence of new technologies that impact the very nature of trade. Chapter II analyses how international trade could contribute more to environmental sustainability. Trade has both positive and negative impacts on the environment and the net balance of that effect is uncertain. The links between trade and the environment have become more visible since the 1990s; the increase in environment-related trade disputes testifies to this, as does the fact that environmental chapters are increasingly being written into trade agreements. Finally, the third chapter examines the situation regarding infrastructure and logistics, which are key to international trade and production. In conclusion, public policies on economic infrastructure concessions need to be re-examined, considering the crucial role played by the State in regulation, especially in overseeing competition.

Book excerpt: The 2019 edition of the Trade and Integration Monitor identifies the factors underlying recent developments in exports of Latin America and the Caribbean, examines the risks that are present at the current juncture, and concludes that the ongoing contraction in the region will continue. It argues that the third trade contraction in a decade, which is unfolding against a backdrop of limited dynamism in global trade, underscores the vulnerability of Latin American and Caribbean economies to increased external risks. Looking ahead, the publication highlights that integrating the regional market and boosting the competitiveness of the services sector are fundamental to expanding exports and improving their resilience.

Book Synopsis Trading Promises for Results by : Mauricio Mesquita Moreira
Download or read book Trading Promises for Results written by Mauricio Mesquita Moreira and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after the region embarked on large-scale liberalization, trade policy could have been expected to become all but irrelevant. Instead, a mismatch between expectations and what could realistically be delivered set the stage for much of the disappointment, skepticism, and fatigue regarding trade policy in the region, particularly in the early 2000s. By setting the bar unrealistically high, governments and analysts made trade policies an easy target for special interests that were hurt by liberalization and for those ideologically opposed to free trade. The most immediate victims were the more tangible growth and welfare gains, whose relevance was lost amid the noise of grandiose visions.
Book Synopsis Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2019 by : United Nations
Download or read book Foreign Direct Investment in Latin America and the Caribbean 2019 written by United Nations and published by United Nations. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ECLAC annual report sets out and analyses the main foreign direct investment (FDI) trends in the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. In the region, FDI inflows were up (by 13.2%) year on year for the first time in five years, at US$ 184.287 billion. This performance is explained by higher flows into just a few countries, however, mainly Brazil and Mexico. Moreover, it does not reflect equity investment, but higher inflows in the form of intercompany loans and, to a lesser extent, reinvestment of earnings. Manufactures and services were the sectors receiving most equity, although there was a slight rise in investment in natural resource sectors compared with 2018.
Book Synopsis China-Latin America and the Caribbean by : Thierry Kellner
Download or read book China-Latin America and the Caribbean written by Thierry Kellner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the political, economic and geopolitical dynamics that China’s presence has initiated throughout Latin America and the Caribbean between 2008 and 2020. Written by experts across three continents, contributions to this edited volume explore the bilateral relations that China has developed with almost all Latin American and Caribbean countries, charting both the benefits they have brought and the problems that these relations have created for local actors. The book analyses the emergence of new forms of "dependence", considers issues such as the existence of a deindustrialization phenomenon throughout Latin America and ultimately questions whether China and the United States are engaged in a zero-sum game in the region. It also investigates challenges that the densification of the web of China’s relations and exchanges with Latin America and the Caribbean countries pose; not only to the United States and European countries, as traditional partners of these states, but also to Latin American regionalism. Including an extensive set of case studies and local, regional and global-level analysis, China-Latin America and the Caribbean provides an empirically rich resource for students and scholars of Chinese foreign and economic policy, Latin America, the Caribbean and wider geopolitics.
