Book excerpt: This publication shows readers how to design and conduct a census or sample survey. It explains basic survey concepts and provides information on how to create efficient and high quality surveys. It is aimed at those involved in planning, conducting or managing a survey and at students of survey design courses. This book contains the following information: formulating the survey objectives and design a questionnaire; things to consider when designing a survey (choosing between a sample or a census, defining the survey population, choosing which survey frame to use, possible sources of survey error); determining the sample size, allocate the sample across strata and select the sample; appropriate uses of survey data and methods of point and variance estimation in data analysis; data dissemination and disclosure control; using administrative data, particularly during the design and estimation phases; choosing a collection method (self-enumeration, personal interview or telephone interview, computer-assisted versus paper-based questionnaires); organizing and conducting data collection operations; processing data (all data handling activities between collection and estimation) and using quality control and quality assurance measures to minimize and control errors during various survey steps; and planning and managing a survey. This publication also includes a case study that illustrates the steps in developing a household survey, using the methods and principles presented in the book.
Book Synopsis Integrating Research Methods and Statistics for Behavioural Sciences by : Siu L. Chow

This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows why and how the concepts, control and happenstance, are crucial to methodology and statistics, respectively. Control, as a means to reduce ambiguity, fulfills its function because of inductive rules. Statistical null hypothesis renders it possible to use test of statistical significance to rule out happenstance as explanation of research result. This book shows why and how the concepts, control and happenstance, are crucial to methodology and statistics, respectively. Control, as a means to reduce ambiguity, fulfills its function because of inductive rules. Statistical null hypothesis renders it possible to use tests of statistical significance to rule out happenstance as an explanation for research results. Basic concepts of descriptive statistics are introduced in the context of data collection, tabulation, derivation, and standardization. Issues related to psychometric measurement, correlation and regression are thereby explained as well. Random sampling distribution renders possible inferential statistics (viz., confidence interval, parameter estimation, hypothesis testing and goodness-of-fit). The book shows how standardizing random sampling distribution gives rise to parametric tests. In short, this book shows that research impartiality is possible despite the belief in (as well as instances of) “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

Download or read book The Coin Book written by Isaac Smith Homans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coin Book: Comprising a History of Coinage; A Synopsis of the Mint Laws of the United States; Statistics of the Coinage From 1792 to 1870; List of Current Gold and Silver Coins, and Their Custom House Values An inquiry, therefore, into the coinage of a country like great britain, from the earliest times, possesses an interest apart from the subject itself as a mere antiquarian research, because it throws an indirect ray of light on the social condition of the people from age to age, and enables us to note the progressive steps of their improve ment in taste, refinement, and mechanical invention, as well as to ascertain their comparative wealth and social comfort, indicated by the value of the necessary articles of life. The subject partakes not, indeed, of the true dignity and importance of history; but, in a less ambitious channel of research, it is not without utility and instruction. Download or read book Statistics written by Gudmund R. Iversen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An imaginative introduction to statistics, reorienting the course towards an understanding of statistical thinking and its meaning and use in daily life and work. Gudmund Iversen and Mary Gergen bring their years of experience and insight into teaching the subject, incorporating such innovations and insights as a sustained emphasis on the process of statistical analysis and what statistics can and cannot do as well as careful exposition of the ideas of developing statistical and graphical literacy. In the spirit of contemporary pedagogy and by using technology, the authors break down the traditional barriers of statistical formulas and lengthy computations encountered by students without strong quantitative skills. Further, formulas are grouped at the end of each chapter along with related problems, and, with only algebra as a prerequisite, the book is ideal for students in the liberal arts and the behavioural and social sciences.
Book Synopsis Statistics for Criminal Justice and Criminology in Practice and Research by : Jack Fitzgerald
Download or read book Statistics for Criminal Justice and Criminology in Practice and Research written by Jack Fitzgerald and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Statistics for Criminal Justice and Criminology in Practice and Research is an engaging and comprehensive introduction to the study of basic statistics for students pursuing careers as practitioners or researchers in both Criminal Justice and Criminology programs. This student-friendly text shows how to calculate a variety of descriptive and inferential statistics, recognize which statistics are appropriate for particular data analysis situations, and perform hypothesis tests using inferential statistics. But it is much more than a "cook book." It encourages readers to think critically about the strengths and limitations of the statistics they are calculating, as well as how they may be misapplied and misleading. Examples of statistics and statistical analyses are drawn from the worlds of the practitioner as well as the policymaker and researcher. Students will also gain a clear understanding of major ethical issues in conducting statistical analyses and reporting results, as well as insight into the realities of the life of researchers and practitioners as they use statistics and statistical analyses in their day-to-day activities.
