Book excerpt: Methods were developed for measurement of specific components of forces acting on rocket sleds during runs. The forces acting on the sleds for which the instrumentation was developed to measure were the thrust forces from the pusher, the braking forces, and forces acting on the slipper by the track. The methods of measuring the forces included instrumentation of the existing sled structures with strain gages and use of specially developed force transducers which were mounted on the slippers. For both force measurement methods, static calibration procedures were used. The transducer developed was a three component force transducer, measuring two orthogonal components of force and one moment component. Two of these transducers were manufactured and sent to Holloman Air Force Base for use. In addition to the development of methods of measuring forces, the contractor consulted with the Track Test Directorate on problems related to force systems acting on sleds and behavior of the sled due to the force systems. Descriptions of this work are included. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vertical quasi-steady state forces on three dual rail rocket sleds, which were predicted using wind tunnel data, are compared with those measured on the Holloman Test Track. A description of the magnitude and character of the oscillatory forces is also presented. This is the first such comparison since the advent of rocket sled testing. Wind tunnel force tests on the three rocket sleds indicated that aerodynamic forces would be of sufficient magnitude to warrant consideration in structural design. The forces measured during the track tests indicated that the aerodynamic contribution was the dominant component to the vertical quasi-steady state force in the supersonic regime. The results of full-scale investigations showed implicitly that when the sleds experienced considerable aerodynamic forces, the wind tunnel data agreed fairly well with the forces measured on the rocket sled. The quasi-steady state vertical forces were predicted, using wind tunnel data, to within 3,000 pounds for loads between 12,000 and 32,000 pounds. (Author).

Book excerpt: The flow field about the nose section of a hypervelocity test sled is computed using computational fluid dynamics. The numerical model of the test sled corresponds to the Nike O/U narrow gage sled used in the upgrade program at the High Speed Test Track facility, Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico. The high temperatures and pressures resulting from the aerodynamic heating and loading affect the sled structure and the performance of the vehicle. The sled transitions from an air environment to a helium environment at a speed of approximately 3,300 feet per second (Mach 3 in air, Mach 1.02 in helium) to reduce the effects of high Mach number flows. Steady, three-dimensional, inviscid flow solutions are computed for Mach numbers of 2 and 3 in air (2,200 and 3,300 feet per second), and for Mach numbers of 1.02, 2.5 and 3.1 in helium (3,300, 8,076 and 10,000 feet per second). Mesh adaptation is used to obtain a mesh-independent solution. Second-order solutions are obtained for the Mach 3 in air and Mach 1.02 in helium cases. The unsteady transition from air to helium at 3,300 feet per second is also modeled. Mach 3 in air computations are compared with analytical results.

The human body can be the limiting factor in the design of aircraft and spacecraft. Humans cannot survive unaided at high altitudes. There have been a number of books written on the subject of spacesuits, but the literature on the high-altitude pressure suits is lacking. This volume provides a high-level summary of the technological development and operational use of partial- and full-pressure suits, from the earliest models to the current high altitude, full-pressure suits used for modern aviation, as well as those that were used for launch and entry on the Space Shuttle. The goal of this work is to provide a resource on the technology for suits designed to keep humans alive at the edge of space."--NTRS Web site.

Book excerpt: Hypersonics is the study of flight at speeds where aerodynamic heating dominates the physics of the problem. Typically this is Mach 5 and higher. Hypersonics is an engineering science with close links to supersonics and engine design. Within this field, many of the most important results have been experimental. The principal facilities have been wind tunnels and related devices, which have produced flows with speeds up to orbital velocity. Why is it important? Hypersonics has had two major applications. The first has been to provide thermal protection during atmospheric entry. Success in this enterprise has supported ballistic-missile nose cones, has returned strategic reconnaissance photos from orbit and astronauts from the Moon, and has even dropped an instrument package into the atmosphere of Jupiter. The last of these approached Jupiter at four times the speed of a lunar mission returning to Earth. Work with re-entry has advanced rapidly because of its obvious importance. The second application has involved high-speed propulsion and has sought to develop the scramjet as an advanced airbreathing ramjet. Scramjets are built to run cool and thereby to achieve near-orbital speeds. They were important during the Strategic Defense Initiative, when a set of these engines was to power the experimental X-30 as a major new launch vehicle. This effort fell short, but the X-43A, carrying a scramjet, has recently flown at Mach 9.65 by using a rocket. Atmospheric entry today is fully mature as an engineering discipline. Still, the Jupiter experience shows that work with its applications continues to reach for new achievements. Studies of scramjets, by contrast, still seek full success, in which such engines can accelerate a vehicle without the use of rockets. Hence, there is much to do in this area as well. For instance, work with computers may soon show just how good scramjets can become. NASA SP-2007-4232

It explores the ways in which animal high-altitude and space flight research impacted on space flight biomedicine and technology, and how the results - both successful and disappointing - allowed human beings to then undertake that same hazardous journey with far greater understanding and confidence. This complete and authoritative book will undoubtedly become the ultimate authority on animal space flights.
