Book excerpt: Pultruded fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) are a promising new structural system that can be used successfully in many areas of civil engineering. The objective of this study is to examine the creep behavior of the composite materials that might be used in bridge construction and to review some existing theoretical and empirical creep models. Both viscoelastic mechanical models and models based on experimental results such as Findley's power law model are evaluated. Using both creep models, this study examines the fiber volume fraction effects and temperature effects on nonlinear creep behavior. The Marquardt algorithm is applied as a method for nonlinear curve fitting analysis. Estimates of the creep behavior for whole fiber volume fraction from limited fiber volume fraction information are carried out. This study verifies that the fiber volume fraction and temperature play important role in the mechanical behavior and in the creep behavior of composite materials. Finite element analysis is used to conduct an evaluation of the mechanical performance of some currently proposed composite structural bridge components. In the finite element analysis, this study uses the commercial finite element software, ABAQUS, and a FORTRAN program which was developed for this study. A comparison is made of the analytic finite element results with a closed-form solution. From the material study it was concluded that the creep and creep-recovery behavior of FRP structural components could be satisfactorily based on Findley's power law. Four examples of typical pultruded bridge deck sections were selected for study. Two specific types of behavior that could be affected by creep were studied. The first is the effect of creep on the long-term deflection behavior of a FRP Bridge deck under self-weight. The second was a study to determine whether the change in loadings resulting from creep could affect the forces on individual sections of the bridge deck to cause local buckling effects. After carrying out a rigorous finite element solution, a simplified method was evaluated using equations for total structural element behavior with specially modified coefficients to account for creep effects. This study also investigated the creep deflection analysis for live loads using Average Daily Truck Traffic (ADTT) and evaluated the creep deflection behavior with static truck loads and cyclic loads for the selected bridge deck systems. AASHTO truck loading conditions were used to determine if they introduce an important contribution to the long-time performance of the deck systems. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book excerpt: Throughout the United States including New York, many reinforced concrete bridges on county and state highway systems have deteriorated to the certain degree that structural strengthening is necessary to extend their service life. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite systems appeared to be one of the options to address the issues of cost-effective load-rating improvement. Recently, an FRP deck has been installed on a state highway, located in New York State, as an experimental project. This paper describes multi-step linear static analyses that were conducted using the finite element method to study the possible failure mechanisms of the deck-superstructure system. Finite element model was verified using the load tests of the bridge deck. Furthermore, the thermal behavior of the FRP deck was investigated and presented in this paper. Analytical results reveal several potential failure mechanisms for the FRP deck and truss bridge system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1996, over 30 Fiber Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composite bridges have been installed in the United States. Bridge locations are in Kansas, Missouri, New York, Iowa, Colorado, West Virginia, Ohio, California, Idaho, Washington, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Maryland, Oregon, North Carolina and South Carolina. Compared to traditional steel and concrete bridge structures, the FRP panel shows several significant advantages: reduced weight, higher strength, better corrosion resistance and quicker installation. However, FRP materials exhibit different physical properties. As such, a composite bridge would demonstrate different deformation and failure patterns than a traditional bridge. During the past years, much experimental research has been conducted to investigate FRP bridge deck performance. Most experiments divide into two types: 1) static and fatigue tests in the laboratory and 2) real traffic load tests in the field. These experimental results, as well as FEM analytical results, have served as baseline data for FRP bridge deck design. A long-term remote monitoring system was designed to investigate the response of the No-Name Creek composite bridge to the local weather. The characteristics of the bridge temperatures, the temperature differences of the two panel surfaces and the relationship between the temperature difference and the deflection were investigated with respect to the different weather patterns. Twelve thermal sensors were embedded into the FRP bridge panels. In addition, 3 laser sensors were installed to measure bridge thermal deflection. Between October 2004 and September 2005, bridge temperature and deflection were measured at 20 minute intervals. Relations between weather condition, temperature distribution and bridge thermal deflection for that bridge were analyzed. From the analysis of the experimental and FE methods, the responses of the composite bridge to weather are summarized as follows: (1) The temperatures of the upper and bottom panel surfaces and their differences greatly change with time of day and season. The extreme temp usually appears in the early afternoon and the minimum temp usually appears in the early morning or in the night. The bottom surface temperature is near the climatic temperature. (2) The bridge deflections are approximately proportional to the temperature differences. (3) The bridge had a significant upward deflection on a sunny day during the summer with the maximum often occurring between 3:00-5:00PM. The bridge has a downward deflection during the night with it being the most severe in the winter. (4) Comparing climate induced deflection to traffic load induced deflection, the climate induced deflection is at least on the same order of deflection as allowable traffic load. Therefore, it should be considered in the FRP bridge design process. (5) Thermal load and deflection usually are larger on clear days than on unclear, rainy, and snowy days. (6) Distributions of thermal load in the panel can form a larger amount of deflection in the hot season than in the cold season.

Book excerpt: Decks manufactured with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials are used in highway bridges. A performance evaluation of FRP composite decks subjected to simulated traffic loads that induce repetitive stress cycles under extremely high and low temperature is presented. Fatigue testing of three FRP composite bridge deck prototypes and one FRP-concrete hybrid bridge deck prototype under two extreme temperature conditions: -30 C ( -22 F), and 50 C (122 F) was conducted. The fatigue response of the deck prototypes was correlated with the baseline performance of a conventional reinforced concrete deck subjected to similar test conditions. Design loads were applied simultaneously at two points using servo-controlled hydraulic actuators specially designed and fabricated to perform under extreme temperatures. Quasi-static load-deflection and load-strain characteristics were determined at predetermined fatigue cycle levels. No significant distress was observed in any of the composite deck prototypes during ten million load cycles. The effects of extreme temperatures and accumulated load cycles on the load-deflection and load-strain response of FRP composite and FRP-concrete hybrid bridge decks are discussed based on the experimental results.
