Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Staten Island is New York City’s smallest yet fastest growing borough: a conservative, suburban community of nearly a half a million on the fringe of the nation’s most liberal, global city. Staten Island: Conservative Bastion in a Liberal City chronicles how this “forgotten borough” has grappled with its uneasy relationship with the rest of the City of New York since the 1920s. Daniel C. Kramer and Richard M. Flanagan analyze the politics behind events that have shaped the borough, such as the opening of the Verrazano Bridge and the closure of the Fresh Kills Landfill. Lost opportunities are discussed, including the failure to construct a rail link to the other boroughs of New York, to adequately plan for the explosive housing boom in recent decades and, some say, to create an independent City of Staten Island. Unlike much of New York City, Staten Island is a place with robust party competition and lively democratic politics with hard-fought campaigns, bitter feuds, and career-ending scandals. Staten Island’s two most successful politicians of the twentieth century—Republicans John Marchi and Guy Molinari—defended the borough’s interests while defining an urban conservativism that would influence politics elsewhere. In fact, Staten Island has played a pivotal role in the winning electoral coalitions of Republican mayors Rudy Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg and continues to spark the imaginations of New Yorkers on a scale that is disproportionate to the borough’s relatively small size. Staten Island: Conservative Bastion in a Liberal City will allow readers to gain access to the borough-based roots of New York City’s politics. This book will be of special interest to anyone who wishes to understand the dynamics of middle-class life and democratic representation in a global city.

It was one of the greatest mass emigrations in world history, and many settled in Staten Island. Following the opening of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in 1964, the island experienced another great influx of Italian immigrants, this time from the other boroughs of New York City. This new wave was responsible for doubling the island population by the year 2000. Italian Americans are evident in every avocation and in each corner of Staten Island society, with achievers in education, business, government, medicine, and sports and entertainment. Italian Staten Island chronicles the traditions, culture, and heritage of Italian Americans through more than 200 photographs.

Country music legend Roy Clark got his start as a virtuoso guitar player on the Staten Island Ferry. Anna Leonowens, who worked with the king's children in the Court of Siam and was the basis for The King and I, came back to Staten Island to write about her experiences and run a school for children. Join native authors Theresa Anarumo and Maureen Seaberg as they document the hidden history of Staten Island.

Jewish settlers clustered around the Arietta Street, St. George, Bergen Point, and Perth Amboy ferries and built seven synagogues and a Jewish community center. Jewish dry goods, candy, hardware, and men's furnishings stores sprung up along the major shopping areas of Jersey Street and Richmond Avenue. As the Jewish population grew, it expanded into new developments in Willowbrook, Eltingville, and Arden Heights and was able to support a Jewish elementary school.

Book excerpt: Lost love haunts many as they age, but ; in Staten Island Memoirs, Paris. Polanski creates a ficticious love affair with a beautiful face from the past; he cannot forget; Paris has led a full life that lacks only one thing - the love of a beautiful woman he met 43 years ago. The woman in question is the real life equivalent to Helen, the central character in the novel, modeled after the Greek Goddess Helen of Troy. The story opens with Paris Polanski in his home in Grant City, Staten Island. Not being able to find his long lost love, Paris creates a work of fiction in which he recreates his life by falling in love with, marrying and becoming part of Helen’s life, thus showing just how far one man's obsession will go to remove the sorrow of lost love. The story then goes back in time and continues Paris Polanski as a young man, secretly in love with a nameless, beautiful young woman. Shy and lacking self esteem, he is unable to express his feelings for her, and loses her to another man. After serving in the US Navy, Paris attends a New York City college and during one of his classes, he dreams of his ideal woman in the image and likeness of Helen of Troy. A year later, Paris sees the same young woman, Helen Jones, a student at Wilson College. She is smart, beautiful, and popular, and comes from a wealthy family. Paris on the other hand comes from a middle class family, dresses poorly, and is not blessed with the social graces; Engaged to a handsome young Ivy League attorney, Helen learns he has been cheating, and ends the relationship.

Book excerpt: A fresh, compelling collection of stories by a serious new voice on the literary scene. Winner of the Hornblower Award by the New York Society Library, Honorable Mention for the International Latino Book Awards: Best Collection of Short Stories by Empowering Latino Futures New York City's Staten Island is often described as the forgotten borough. But with Staten Island Stories, Claire Jimenez shines a spotlight on the imagined lives of the islanders. Inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, this collection of loosely linked tragicomic short stories travels across time to explore defining moments in the island's history, from the 2003 Staten Island Ferry crash and the New York City blackout to the growing opioid and heroin crisis, Eric Garner's murder, and the 2016 presidential election.
