Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is published by the Society for Intercultural Pastoral Care & Counseling (SIPCC), Dusseldorf, Germany. It addresses key questions such as, what makes for competent pastoral care for, and with migrants?; how does pastoral care relate to social action for, and with migrants'. These are urgent questions in times when the flows of migration seem to grow even faster than the manifold controversies on migration. The issues are numerous, as they mirror the great diversity of causes, contexts, conflicts, political constellations, and attempts at conviviality. All those diverse factors shape the environments in which pastoral care and social action are undertaken and they condition the ways in which care and action can in turn shape the environments in which interactions between migrants and non-migrants take place. The collection of perspectives in this volume are the fruit of a seminar of the SIPCC in Gent, Belgium, in September of 2016, ¿Care and Counseling as Social Action. Inter-religious Cooperation in Urban Migration Contexts.¿ The participants represented many nationalities from five continents. They came as pastors, organizers, supervisors, teachers, religious leaders and academic researchers. They were Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Humanist. They reflected upon their contexts and in many cases on their own work. That means that the reflections offered in this text are born out of engagement with migrants, and/or experiences as migrants. Some provide stories. Some propose pastoral approaches. Some present research. They are made available in this volume in order to contribute to discussions on cultural and social perspectives on migrants and migration, and also to foster good pastoral and social care for and with migrants. The book has four main sections: Surveying the Landscapes of migration; Cultivating care for migrants; and Mediating spaces: Reflections on pastoral care with migrants; and a A selected and annotated bibliography.

It begins with the historical experiences where Italians became identified as the "Italian Problem", right through the Second World War where they became "Enemy Aliens" and on to the post war period, where Italians moved from being "Dagoes" to becoming "Doers". The first half of this impressive book challenges the treatment of Italians in Australia and boldly argues for a new awareness, almost an Italianization of the Australian Catholic Church. The final two chapters explore the Italian contribution to the Australian Church through the prism of theology and scripture. As Australians of an Italian background move on to their third and even fourth generation in Australia, this volume will become a rally call to reclaim our unique heritage, which is Catholic, Italian and, most of all, Australian.

Book excerpt: Everyone needs love. Everyone desires love. But not everyone understands love. In fact, love is probably the most misunderstood subject in history. In his first Encyclical, Pope Benedict helps to clarify the meaning of love. He examines the nature of various kinds of love — human love and divine love, eros, friendship, and charity. He writes beautifully and inspirationally of how man was made for love by the God who is love, the God who became one of us out of love — Jesus Christ. In the second part of the Encyclical, Benedict addresses the Church's practice of love. He examines the relationship between justice and charity, as well as the call of every Catholic to serve others in love. The Pope's "love letter" to mankind is remarkably accessible and timely.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

It departs from Africa, en routes itself toward Asia, Oceania, Europe, and culminates in the Americas, with the territories of Latin America, Canada, and the United States. The volume travels through worn out pathways of migration that continue to be threaded upon today, and theologically reflects on a wide range of migratory aims that result also in diverse forms of indigenization of Christianity. Among the main issues being considered are: How have globalization and migration affected the theological self-understanding of Christianity? In light of globalization and migration, how is the evangelizing mission of Christianity to be understood and carried out? What ecclesiastical reforms if any are required to enable the church to meet present-day challenges?
