Book Synopsis Town of Weston by : Mary Frances Peirce
Download or read book Town of Weston written by Mary Frances Peirce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Town of Weston: The Tax Lists, 1757-1827 This volume forms the third in the order of publication printed by the Town of Weston. It gives the Tax Lists in a nearly unbroken series from 1757 to 1827, and will be especially valuable in locating and identifying individuals of whom there is no other record. The records of births are in most towns very defective; but if a man reached the age of twenty-one, and was not a pauper, the Assessors were sure to find him. Poll-taxes levied upon all males between the ages of sixteen and twenty-one were assessed in the name of the father or guardian. This fact often assists in determining relationship. The early lists were divided into North and South Side sheets, indicating location with reference to the Great Country Road, passing through the middle of the town from east to west. These early lists were not alphabetical; but those living near each other were usually grouped together, the more recent tax-payers, especially those paying a poll-tax merely, being placed at the end. The Voting List, prepared for the March Meeting, was made from the Tax List of the preceding year, and where the latter is missing, the former, if present, has been used as a partial substitute. The years for which there is no record are 1770, 1783 to 1787 inclusive, and 1791. With the exception of the year 1757, the Voting List did not contain the names of those who paid a poll-tax merely, such not being allowed to vote. Book Synopsis Republic of Texas: Poll Lists for 1846 by : Marion Day Mullins
Download or read book Republic of Texas: Poll Lists for 1846 written by Marion Day Mullins and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1974 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arranged alphabetically, this work lists the names and counties of residence of approximately 18,000 Texas taxpayers. (A "poll" tax of one dollar was levied on every white male resident over the age of twenty-one and on women who were heads of household.) By 1846, when Texas became the thirty-sixth state in the Union, there were sixty-seven county governments already organized as functioning units of the state, yet no authorized census of the state was undertaken until 1850. This 1846 poll list, compiled from the original tax rolls housed in the Texas State Archives, is actually the nearest thing we have to a complete census of the period.

Book Synopsis American Government 3e by : Glen Krutz
Download or read book American Government 3e written by Glen Krutz and published by . This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black & white print. American Government 3e aligns with the topics and objectives of many government courses. Faculty involved in the project have endeavored to make government workings, issues, debates, and impacts meaningful and memorable to students while maintaining the conceptual coverage and rigor inherent in the subject. With this objective in mind, the content of this textbook has been developed and arranged to provide a logical progression from the fundamental principles of institutional design at the founding, to avenues of political participation, to thorough coverage of the political structures that constitute American government. The book builds upon what students have already learned and emphasizes connections between topics as well as between theory and applications. The goal of each section is to enable students not just to recognize concepts, but to work with them in ways that will be useful in later courses, future careers, and as engaged citizens. In order to help students understand the ways that government, society, and individuals interconnect, the revision includes more examples and details regarding the lived experiences of diverse groups and communities within the United States. The authors and reviewers sought to strike a balance between confronting the negative and harmful elements of American government, history, and current events, while demonstrating progress in overcoming them. In doing so, the approach seeks to provide instructors with ample opportunities to open discussions, extend and update concepts, and drive deeper engagement.
