This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes proceedings of a conference held every two years to report on the state of the Great Lakes ecosystem and the major factors impacting it, and to provide a forum for exchange of this information among Great Lakes decision-makers. The first day of the conference looked at the state of the whole Great Lakes basin using the results of implementation of 31 of the 80 environmental indicators discussed at the previous conference. The focus was on human health, with more detailed presentations on three indicators and a presentation on the development & use of indices. The second day had a local perspective, beginning with a presentation on the integration of Biodiversity Investment Areas, then looking at how indicators are put to use on a smaller scale. Other presentations reviewed some restoration & rehabilitation work taking place in the basin. The third day looked at the individual lakes & related rivers and how indicators are used. The St. Lawrence River presentation focussed on biodiversity & non-native species, the Lake Ontario presentation looked at lake trout rehabilitation as well as indicators, while the rest of the presentations examined the state of the ecosystem. The Lake Michigan presentation also discussed the state of the fishery. Appendices form the bulk of this publication and consist of slides or visual material from the presentations.

This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the coastal human population increases in the United States, there will likely be increasing environmental and socioeconomic pressures on our coastal and estuarine environments. Monitoring the condition of all our nation's coastal and estuarine ecosystems over the long term is more than any one program can accomplish on its own. Therefore, it is crucial that monitoring programs at all levels (local, state, and federal) cooperate in the collection, sharing, and use of environmental data. This volume is the proceedings of the Coastal Monitoring Through Partnerships symposium that was held in Pensacola, Florida in April of 2001, and was organized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Environmental Monitoring and Assessment Program (EMAP), and the Council of State Governments (CSG). It contains papers that describe various multi-disciplinary coastal and estuarine environmental monitoring programs, designed and implemented by using regional and national partnerships with federal and state agencies, academia, Native American tribes, and nongovernmental organizations. In addition, it includes papers on modeling and data management; monitoring and assessment of benthic communities; development of biological indicators and interlaboratory sediment comparisons; microbiological modeling and indicators; and monitoring and assessment of phytoplankton and submerged aquatic vegetation. There are many components involved in determining the overall impacts of anthropogenic stressors on coastal and estuarine waters. It will take strong partnerships like those described in this volume to ensure that we have healthy and sustainable coastal and estuarine environments, now and in the future.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the environment of North America is not dissected by political borders, Canada and the United States often measure environmental conditions and report on them using different indicators. This report examines the environmental indicators used by both nations, and based on analysis of current research into common methodologies used in national, regional and global environmental reporting, it goes on to draw lessons for the development of bilateral indicators to cover the North American region.

Book excerpt: How are the Great Lakes doing and what progress are we making in protecting and restoring them? These are two of the most frequently asked questions about the largest source of surface fresh water in the world. Unfortunately, we do not have simple answers for them. With the tremendous efforts and resources invested in restoration by governments, the private sector, and non-profit organizations in the United States and Canada over the past 40 years, we need to be able to respond much more clearly and definitively in the future. Recognizing this, the International Joint Commission (IJC) through its Science Advisory Board and Water Quality Board initiated a project to put the Great Lakes community in a position to respond. The focus of the work is to identify a limited number of ecosystem indicators especially important to the health of the Great Lakes basin ecosystem and which tell us the most about it. Extensive work has been done over the years to measure the condition of the Lakes as part of the State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC), and this work will form the basis for many of the indicators. What is being done now is selecting "the fewest that tell us the most." The need for key indicators is even greater now with a new Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (the Agreement) between the United States and Canada. The two countries have determined that we should be able to drink the water, eat the fish, and swim at the beaches. To assess progress toward these goals and the overall condition of the Lakes, the indicators presented in this report are aligned with the chemical, physical and biological integrity framework included in the Agreement. The focus here is on ecological indicators. Indicators for public health will be covered in a separate, but related, report.
