Book Synopsis The New Hampshire State Constitution by : Susan E. Marshall
Download or read book The New Hampshire State Constitution written by Susan E. Marshall and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2011 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared in 1776, the constitution of New Hampshire is the nation's first written state constitution. The 1776 constitution was a brief 15 sentences, but it laid out a form of government dedicated to popular control and limited government powers that have remained a central theme of New Hampshire constitutional law to this day. The detail of the framing of the original state constitution --the first in the nation- provides a context for understanding and appreciating the traditions which has marked the state's political and constitutional history, even after 144 amendments and over 200 years. The New Hampshire State Constitution includes the full text of each article of the constitution and an analysis of each article's development. Susan E. Marshall includes a description of amendments to the text and references to cases decided by the New Hampshire Supreme Court. She offers a historical overview of the development and application of the New Hampshire constitution and provides a general constitutional history and an article-by-article commentary, including a discussion of important cases. Also included are a bibliographical essay, table of cases, tables relating to constitutional conventions and amendments, and a general index, offering significant sources for further study. Previously published by Greenwood, this title has been brought back in to circulation by Oxford University Press with new verve. Re-printed with standardization of content organization in order to facilitate research across the series, this title, as with all titles in the series, is set to join the dynamic revision cycle of The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States The Oxford Commentaries on the State Constitutions of the United States is an important series that reflects a renewed international interest in constitutional history and provides expert insight into each of the 50 state constitutions. Each volume in this innovative series contains a historical overview of the state's constitutional development, a section-by-section analysis of its current constitution, and a comprehensive guide to further research. Under the expert editorship of Professor G. Alan Tarr, Director of the Center on State Constitutional Studies at Rutgers University, this series provides essential reference tools for understanding state constitutional law. Books in the series can be purchased individually or as part of a complete set, giving readers unmatched access to these important political documents.

This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 1117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing chronologies of important events, historical narratives from the first settlement to the present, and biographies of major figures, this work offers readers an unseen look at the history of racism from the perspective of individual states. From the initial impact of European settlement on indigenous populations to the racial divides caused by immigration and police shootings in the 21st century, each American state has imposed some form of racial restriction on its residents. The United States proclaims a belief in freedom and justice for all, but members of various minority racial groups have often faced a different reality, as seen in such examples as the forcible dispossession of indigenous peoples during the Trail of Tears, Jim Crow laws' crushing discrimination of blacks, and the manifest unfairness of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Including the District of Columbia, the 51 entries in these two volumes cover the state-specific histories of all of the major minority and immigrant groups in the United States, including African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, and Native Americans. Every state has had a unique experience in attempting to build a community comprising multiple racial groups, and the chronologies, narratives, and biographies that compose the entries in this collection explore the consequences of racism from states' perspectives, revealing distinct new insights into their respective racial histories.

Download or read book When Baseball Met Big Bill Haywood written by Scott C. Roper and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 20th century, immigration, labor unrest, social reforms and government regulations threatened the power of the country's largest employers. The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company of Manchester, New Hampshire, remained successful by controlling its workforce, the local media, and local and state government. When a 1912 strike in nearby Lawrence, Massachusetts, threatened to bring the Industrial Workers of the World union to Manchester, the company sought to reassert its influence. Amoskeag worked to promote company pride and to Americanize its many foreign-born workers through benevolence programs, including a baseball club. Textile Field, the most advanced stadium in New England outside of Boston when it was built in 1913, was the centerpiece of this effort. Results were mixed--the company found itself at odds with social movements and new media outlets, and Textile Field became a magnet for conflict with all of professional baseball.
