Book excerpt: Written by leading experts in African studies, this broad introduction to Nigeria follows the history of the republic from the early period to the present day. As Africa's most populated country and major world exporter of oil, Nigeria is a nation with considerable international importance—a role that is hampered by its economic underdevelopment and political instability. This book examines all major aspects of Nigeria's geography, politics, and culture, addressing the area's current attempts at building a strong nation, developing a robust economy, and stabilizing its domestic affairs. Perfect for students of African history, geography, anthropology, and political science, this guidebook provides an overview and history of Nigeria from the early period to contemporary times. Chapters focus on each region in the country; the government, economy and culture of Nigeria; the challenges and problems Nigerians face since the country's independence; and topics affecting everyday life, including music, food, etiquette, gender roles, and marriage.

Book Synopsis Nigeria's Fourth Republic, 1999-2021 by : Michael Nwankpa
Download or read book Nigeria's Fourth Republic, 1999-2021 written by Michael Nwankpa and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-18 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects on Nigeria’s fourth republic, the country’s longest democratic period since it gained independence from Great Britain. It argues that although constitutional or political democracy has lasted for over two decades in Nigeria and seen three successful democratic changes of power, Nigeria’s democracy remains largely militarised. During Nigeria’s fourth republic, political and socio-economic affairs have been increasingly dominated by a pervasive military presence and ideology, which has seen a redistribution of resources and government funds away from social programmes into an increase in security budgets, weapons proliferation, and internal military interventions and occupations. This institutionalisation of violence has turned the country into a national security state where the rule of force and violence rather than dialogue and compassion reflect everyday reality. Whilst acknowledging the history of militarisation during colonial and military rule, this book makes a compelling argument for considering the distinct character of the Nigerian nation state’s path to militarisation over the last 20 years of experimentation with democracy. This book’s fresh insights into the fourth republic’s path to militarisation will be of interest to researchers of African politics, security and development.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses various issues that have arisen in the practice of democracy in Nigeria since 1999, focusing on the Obasanjo years (1999-2007). Nigeria's return to democratic rule has been marked by developments such as the implementation of reforms to address perceived economic problems and corruption. The introduction of democracy in the country has also witnessed many challenges, including the difficult relationship between some political chief executives and their deputies; intriguing intergovernmental relations; the rise and resurgence of sub-national groups that pose serious threat to the hegemony of the state; precarious inter-ethnic/inter-sectional relations; attempts to perpetuate the tenure of chief executives through constitutional amendments; and developments in electoral politics and conflicts. The book provides incisive analysis into these issues.

Book Synopsis Governance and Economic Growth in Nigeria by : Saidat Ilo
Download or read book Governance and Economic Growth in Nigeria written by Saidat Ilo and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2023-10-24 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Governance and Economic Growth in Nigeria: The Role of China and the U.S. between 2001–2011 examines why Nigeria experienced steady economic growth in GDP between 2001–2011. Saidat Ilo argues that improved governance as well as the perceived competition between China and the United States has impacted this growth. She analyzes this perceived rivalry and their policies closely. This book not only contributes to development theories by focusing and analyzing governance but it also goes a step further by filling a gap of contending theories which fail to consider the role governance plays in economic growth and progress particularly in the developing world. Through in-depth research, Saidat Ilo discovers how China and the United States’ foreign policies influence decisions on foreign aid and trade in Nigeria. She shows that there is a direct correlation between good governance and economic growth in Nigeria and provides policy recommendations based on this research.
Book Synopsis Escaping Poverty and Unemployment in Africa by : Joe U. Umo
Download or read book Escaping Poverty and Unemployment in Africa written by Joe U. Umo and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-07-17 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escaping Poverty and Unemployment in Africa: A Flagship Strategy calls out unemployment as a major cause of poverty, and sees both of them as twins representing two sides of the same bad coin. After several years of failures in addressing the twin crises with stand-alone policies and programs in Nigeria and other African countries, the book proposes an innovative strategy aimed at addressing mass unemployment and mass poverty simultaneously. Inspired by the author's field experience as one of the key actors in the successful implementation of the UNDP-ILO-sponsored Jobs for Africa (JFA) program in over ten African countries (between 1998 and 2001), the book presents an alternative framework from the failed extant approaches for tackling the stubborn crises of unemployment and poverty in the continent. The proposed Flagship Strategy is a cocktail of three key policy elements, namely, (1) putting in place a maximum employment-driven macroeconomic economic stability, (2) mobilizing and empowering "ready-to engage" transformational entrepreneurs for leading investment projects/programs to ensure success and sustainability, and (3) undertaking massive investment for poverty-reducing employment (IPRE) projects in all the key sectors of the economy. Given Nigeria's exceptionalism in Africa's poverty profile, the application of the Flagship Strategy has been illustrated for over eight key sectors of this nation's economy. This presents a model for possible replication across other African countries. The empirical validation in the application of the three elements of the Flagship Strategy, along with the successful experience of emerging industrializing countries (of South Korea, Singapore, and China, etc.) in achieving massive reductions in poverty and unemployment using the elements of the strategy, commends its application to African and other developing countries facing the twin challenges. The book is intended to serve generally as an informative read for all who are interested in escaping poverty and unemployment either by themselves or for the people they care about. It has also, in particular, offered fresh strategic insights to scholars and students of development, working on African poverty and unemployment challenges. It can furthermore easily serve as a policy blueprint/ manual for policymakers and/or politicians with genuine interests in finding quick and sustainable solutions to Africa's daunting and existential poverty and unemployment challenges.
Download or read book KANO written by A.I. Tanko and published by Adonis & Abbey Publishers Ltd. This book was released on 2014-01-29 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of African language pedagogy and use in the Diaspora was initiated in the 1960s as African countries attained independence from colonial powers. In the continent, the enthusiasm for the use of indigenous languages and scholarship has remained relatively moderate as scholars are conflicted in their loyalty to imperial languages. The attitude towards the use of African languages by African leaders has also hampered scholars' efforts to create and sustain the needed visibility for African languages around the world. Needless to say, the study of African languages is not only critical to the study of language theories but also important in changing Africa's overwhelming reliance on European languages to communicate with each other. The reliance has not only affected the politics of the continent but also its economic wellbeing. An analysis of the enormous developmental challenges facing the African continent will reveal that many of the economic, social, political and cultural challenges have major language components. It can actually be said that the challenges of development in Africa are either outright language challenges or are language- based. More significantly, at the social level in many parts of the continent, African languages are now perceived as inadequate means of communication. Language Pedagogy and Language Use in Africa discusses the importance of teaching and using of African languages in the African continent and beyond and provides illustrations of both their direct and indirect use a result of historical and contemporary contacts, language planning policies and pedagogical concerns. The book contributes to the on-going discussion on the pedagogy, promotion, and use of African languages both on the continent and in the Diaspora.
