Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stark Raving Rulers is a series of profiles of twenty of the world’s most ruthless dictators. In many forgotten or ignored parts of the world, there are still men who have inherited entire countries from their families, or blatantly rig elections to stay in power. Like latter-day Roman Emperors, they rule according to their whim. - Uzbekistan, where political opponents are boiled to death. - Cameroon, where the President intervenes in the national football team selection. - Belarus, where rather than divorce his wife, the President had her arrested. - North Korea, where Kim Il-sung is still President – despite the fact that he’s been dead for ten years. - Mauritania, where slavery is still widely practised. - Equatorial Guinea, where the President claims to be in permanent contact with God. - Turkmenistan, where the President re-named Tuesday after his mother. - Libya, where Colonel al-Qadhafi threw five million dollars out the window of his car. All of them are fascinating characters. While they all share a ruthlessness, their personalities differ wildly: from the coldly messianic to the downright bizarre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus spent decades in India. - Ethiopians, not Jews, are the real chosen people. - A religion in Iran predicted the Virgin Birth, hundreds of years before Christ. - Abraham was an Iraqi. - Lenin was a Saint. - Worms have souls. - There’s no such thing as the Holy Trinity. - All religions are the same. These are not conspiracy theories – but the genuine beliefs of the some of the world’s major religions. In God: A Users’ Guide, broadcaster Sean Moncrieff takes us through the history and development of the twenty largest religions in the world – in the process demonstrating that the truth is far more compelling than the fictional accounts. In the name of religion, millions have been killed, and millions have been saved. Political dynasties have been built on the back of religious belief, or been destroyed because of them. The history of religion is one of tyranny, betrayal, sacrifice, generosity and faith: where the same ‘facts’ have often brought believers to dramatically different conclusions. From religions which have a multiplicity of Gods, to religions which have no God at all, God: A Users’ Guide demonstrates how the vast majority of the world’s religions did not develop in isolation, but were influenced by already existing belief systems. We have far more in common than you might think.

Download or read book History's 9 Most Insane Rulers written by Scott Rank and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-05-12 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madness and Power. Can the insane rule? Can insanity be a leadership quality? Scott Rank says yes (well, sometimes) in this fascinating look at nine of history’s most notorious rulers, from the Roman emperor Caligula to the North Korean Communist dictator Kim Jong-il. Rank paints intimate portraits of these deeply flawed but powerful men, examining the role that madness played in their lives, the repercussions of their madness on history, and what their madness can tell us about the times in which they lived. In History’s 9 Most Insane Rulers, you will meet: • King Charles VI of France, who thought he was made of glass • Sultan Ibrahim I, who was driven mad by the sadistic succession battles of the Ottoman Empire • Caligula, who built temples to himself and whose reign highlighted the lethal tensions between the power of the new Imperial Rome and the prerogatives of the old Roman Republic • The Russian tsar who became known as Ivan “the Terrible” • King George III of Britain, who not only lost his American colonies, but lost his mind as well • Bavaria’s “Mad” King Ludwig II, who left the world richer for his fabulous fairy tale castles and his patronage of the composer Richard Wagner Insane rulers did not die off with the last of the mad monarchs who inherited their power. Rank also examines the rise to power of crazed modern rulers, such as Idi Amin, who began as a lowly army cook and rose to the presidency of Uganda, and Saparmurat Niyazov, who ruled Turkmenistan and promoted a bizarre cult of personality around himself. Both entertaining and illuminating, History’s 9 Most Insane Rulers is a must-read for anyone interested in the role insanity has played in history.

We can be kind and cruel, guilty of dopey optimism and chronic fatalism. We're friendly, but near impossible to get to know. We're proud to be Irish but often crippled with self-loathing. We think we're great, but not really. We find ourselves fascinating. Of course we do. We're a paradox.'There's something about Irish people, about the way their minds work. But what does it mean to be Irish? In his search for the key to the Irish psyche, Sean Moncrieff roams far and wide – from the pub to the dole queue, the laboratory to the pulpit. Download or read book Royal Babylon written by Karl Shaw and published by Crown. This book was released on 2002-05-07 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An uproarious, eye-opening history of Europe's notorious royal houses that leaves no throne unturned and will make you glad you live in a democracy. Do you want to know which queen has the unique distinction of being the only known royal kleptomaniac? Or which empress kept her dirty underwear under lock and key? Or which czar, upon discovering his wife's infidelity, had her lover decapitated and the head, pickled in a jar, placed at her bedside? Royally dishing on hundreds of years of dubious behavior, Royal Babylon chronicles the manifold appalling antics of Europe's famous families, behavior that rivals the characters in an Aaron Spelling television series. Here, then, are the insane kings of Spain, one of whom liked to wear sixteen pairs of gloves at one time; the psychopathic Prussian soverigns who included Frederick William and his 102-inch waist; sex-fixated French rulers such as Philip Duke D'Oreleans cavorting with more than a hundred mistresses; and, of course, the delightfully drunken and debauched Russian czars - Czar Paul, for example, who to make his soldiers goose-step without bending their legs had steel plates strapped to their knees. But whether Romanov or Windsor, Habsburg or Hanover, these extravagant lifestyles, financed as they were by the royals' badgered subjects, bred the most wonderfully offbeat and disturbingly unbelievable tales - and Karl Shaw has collected them all in this hysterically funny and compulsively readable book. Royal Babylon is history, but not as they teach it in school, and it underlines in side-splitting fashion Queen Victoria's famous warning that it is unwise to look too deeply into the royal houses of Europe.

Download or read book Luminous Ecstasies and Passions written by Love Ministries, Inc. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-01-16 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Shining Thunder Francis was born March 1, 1952. When he was four, his family converted to the Jehovah's Witness cult, and he now describes this as "the most important and educational event in my life." He says, "Being a Witness until I was in my early twenties taught me many crucial core-lessons about religion and psychology. It is helpful to observe people operating erroneously, in order more directly to clarify, by contrast, a better way of life." When he was about twenty, Francis experienced a series of rapid, dynamic, radical shifts into an entirely new area of consciousness. In this state, he felt suffused by a Love so bottomless, so tranquil, so compassionate, and so omnipresent that it changed his life forever. After this illumination, he came to reject the image of God as jealous, violent, psychotic, or angry. He turned away from the ancient vision of God as a tribal war-god, who "belonged" only to his "chosen people". Francis rejected the idea of "Armageddon"-- the belief that God, very soon, is going to massacre the entire human race, except those who have joined the cult. "No more anti-human doctrine can be imagined. Jehovah will make Hitler's concentration-camps look like Sunday picnics in the park," notes Francis. He came to believe, by contrast, that God was Love itself, and that Love was God. Out of love and compassion for others, he wrote down his experiences and thoughts in a book, Jehovah Lives in Brooklyn: Jehovah's Witnesses as a Model of Fundamentalism. His wish: that his book can help others avoid the "black hole" of falling into a mind-controlling minority-religion, where they will waste much time and energy, and lose other valuable and precious components of their lives. "Joining such a group is dangerous to your mind," says Francis. "In the longer term, it can destroy your most prized friendships, and tear apart even your family. I've seen it happen over and over again." Francis does not hate Jehovah's Witnesses, nor does he take a common route of trying to beat them to death with the Bible. He is unconcerned with "disproving" their technical dogmas, and "proving" alternatives. Instead, he takes an overall psychosocial view of the cult, analyzing how behavioral and psychological changes transform one from a functional, independent man or woman into a servant to an international publishing empire-- all in the name of God. Jehovah's Witnesses distribute many books and magazines recycling their dogma and propaganda as part of their "worship." He reveals many "secrets" known only to members. For example, he notes that the Witnesses are so zealous in their sales-work because they really believe that God will kill them and their families if they do not sell the books and magazines written and published by the JW Organization. This is only one example of stunning revelations. He also describes how Jehovah's Witness converts come to believe in a world similar to that of the Middle Ages, where psychological and other problems are literally believed to be caused by "evil spirits." He discusses the place of such rabid superstitions among the Witnesses, and details his own liberation from such radical misperceptions. Unlike other authors, Francis has no "alternative religion" to which he wishes desperately to "convert" his readers. Francis himself "belongs" to no organized religion. He says, "The alternative to the cult-psychology of these groups is not found in the 'frying pan into the fire' strategy of joining another cult or restrictive religion. The alternative that really works is freedom. This is simple: It is just learning to live a good life, a life of compassion, service, friendship, and good works. It is the real and regular practice of Love that can liberate people. It is spirituality. Spirituality is what you do on the inside, while religion is merely what you do on the outside." Spirituality, Francis believes, is not just the memorization of texts, Scriptures, doctrines, or dogmas. "Spirituality is Love in action," Francis says. "Spirituality is service to the needy, kindness extended to others. It is also genuine friendship, a rare and precious component of life. This is not found among the Witnesses, for they will recognize as "friend" only those who closely and meticulously conform to the rules of the Organization." They have taken this idea so far that they now regard "independent thinking" as "dangerous," and possibly even sinful. "The Way of Love," says Francis, "does not follow the ideas of legalism-- that if you only obey mechanical laws, and embrace certain intellectual ideas, you will somehow 'automatically' find salvation. Salvation is actually quite a bit simpler than all that. The Way of Love states that the real value of any person's life is found in the quantity and quality of the Love which she has expressed." The idea that you can create or earn Love contradicts that it is a free gift, given willingly by a loving God. We are saved, not because of what we do, or who we are, but because God has chosen to save us, to love us unconditionally. So, Love is also salvation. Finding Love is finding grace, a condition of stainless and pristine being. By contrast, Francis points out, "The Witnesses feel that they must 'wrest salvation from the hands of a miserly and unwilling god'. Their god tolerates people, but does not actively love them. He does not rejoice in their presence. His royal dignity prohibits that. That is one of the sad consequences of viewing your god as a literal 'king' rather than choosing to embrace God as intimate friend." ******** Leaving a restrictive and controlling religion is never easy. Francis now works as an "exit counselor," which means that it is one of his specialties to aid people to recover from the cult-experience, which always leaves deep, but not necessarily harmful, scars. "The healing begins by a shift in perspective," he says. "Instead of seeing yourself as having lost friends and social stability, try to see the larger and more realistic perspective: You have actually rejoined the human race. You have gained countless potential friends, and no longer have to interrogate yourself--or them-- to determine whether or not they are 'acceptable.' Instead, for the first time, you have a joyful opportunity to open wide your heart, and arms, and to embrace ordinary people-- yes, including people even of other faiths." To the average person, this is quite ordinary. But to the ex-Jehovah's Witness, making a friend from an ordinary neighbor is an astonishing, mind-rocking feat. For JW internal society is meticulously structured to be totally isolated and insulated from all non-JW contacts, as it is taught that contact with ordinary people will "contaminate," corrupt, or spoil the believer's "purity." Actually, too much contact with normal people inevitably results in the Witness' exit from the Organization, as it results in a "normalization" process. The leaders seem terrified of "bad association," which they define as anyone, particularly any educated person-- who is outside the Organization. They continuously bombard members with horror-stories and veiled threats of "Jehovah's vengeance" against "evil-doers," including any member who has the audacity to have non-JW friends or associates. They view the world as one views a population infected with plague-- as disgusting, doomed, and dangerous. &nbs

Download or read book Shameless written by Cristiana Franco and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2014-09-26 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The figure of the dog is a paradox. As in so many cultures, past and present, the dog in ancient Greece was seen as the animal closest to humans, even as it elicited from them the most negative representations. Still a loaded term today, the word bitch not only signified shamelessness and a lack of self-control but was also exclusively figured as female. Woman and dogs in the Greek imagination were intimately intertwined, and in this careful, engaging analysis, Cristiana Franco explores the ancients' complex relationship with both. By analyzing the relationship between humans and dogs as depicted in a vast array of myths, proverbs, spontaneous metaphors, and comic jokes, Franco in particular shows how the symbolic overlap between dog and woman provided the conceptual tools to maintain feminine subordination. Intended for general readers as well as scholars, Shameless extends the boundaries of classics and anthropology, forming a model of the sensitive work that can be done to illuminate how deeply animals are imbricated in human history. The English translation has been revised and expanded from the original Italian edition, and it includes a new methodological appendix by the author that points the way toward future work in the emerging field of human-animal studies.
