Book Synopsis Studies in Honour of Clifford Edmund Bosworth, Volume II by : Carole Hillenbrand
Download or read book Studies in Honour of Clifford Edmund Bosworth, Volume II written by Carole Hillenbrand and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor C.E. Bosworth FBA is a Middle East historian of world stature. In this volume his friends and colleagues come together to honour his 70th birthday. This book ranges widely over time and space but its core is the Islamic culture of Iran and Turkey. The contributors cover topics from the Arab conquest in the seventh century to Turkish and Iranian nationalism in the twentieth century. Special attention is paid to medieval Turco-Persian history, an area which lies at the heart of Professor Bosworth's oeuvre: more than half of the articles fall into this category. Moreover, five of them focus on that early medieval eastern Iranian world on which he has written so widely. While the emphasis lies squarely on history, other fields such as religion, literature, music, art and numismatics are also represented. Thus the volume offers a conspectus of the cultural contribution of Iran and Turkey to Islamic civilisation.

Book Synopsis A Cultural History of Postwar Japan by : Oliviero Frattolillo
Download or read book A Cultural History of Postwar Japan written by Oliviero Frattolillo and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-14 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a political and cultural history of the early postwar Japan aiming at exploring how the perception and cultural values of everyday life in the country changed along with the rise of the kasutori culture. Such a process was closely tied with both a refusal of the samurai culture and the interwar debate on modernity, and it resulted in a decadent way of life, exemplified by intellectuals such as Sakaguchi Ango. It depicts a short-lived radical cultural and social alternative, one that forced people to rethink their relationship to the kokutai, modernity, social roles, daily practices, and the production of knowledge. The subjectivity and daily practices in those years were more important in shaping the cultural identities of the Japanese than the new public ideology of the nation. This challenges some Euro-American historical notions that the new private sphere has emerged in Japan as an effect of the country’s Americanization, rather than from within it. This work not only looks at the immediate aftermath of WWII from the perspective of Japan, but also tries to rethink Westernization in the light of its global appropriation. This volume is addressed to specialists of Japanese or Asian history, but it will also attract historians of the United States and readers from political and intellectual history, cultural studies, and historiography in general.

Download or read book China's Road to Development written by N. Maxwell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-06-28 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's Road to Development is a collection of papers by specialists on aspects of China's economy and society. It covers a wide range of subjects, from development strategy to the specifics of small-scale energy exploitation, from the role of women in China's development to the 'greening' of China through great efforts in afforestation. Commenting on the limited issue original edition (a special issue of the journal World Development) from which this volume has been greatly expanded, Dr. Knowles, President of the Rockefeller Foundation, wrote: "A magnificent collection ot essays by very astute and experienced observers, covering everything from population control, health, economic planning, trade, city planning and rural development to Chinese aid in building the Tanzania-Zambia railway. If I could only afford two books on modern China, I would get this one..."
