Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standards in English a Course of Study in Oral and Written Composition for Elementary Schools The Course of Study herewith submitted is the outcome of an investigation of the language problem in Cambridge, Massachusetts, which was carried on for a space of two years, 1913-1915, under the direction of the writer, who during that period served as Assistant Superintendent of Schools in the city named. It would seem to be important at this time to state the purposes, methods, and results of that investigation, in order that those who think it worth while to use this course may be able properly to do so. Hence the following: In January and February, 1913, a series of conferences on English in the Cambridge public schools brought out the following points: 1. That the English work in the schools was unsatisfactory. (Proposition tentatively accepted.) 2. That there was considerable haziness of opinion as to just exactly wherein it was unsatisfactory. (Examination needed.) 3. That there was also considerable haziness of opinion as to just exactly why it was unsatisfactory. (Examination needed.) Examination Of Proposition No.2 Having accepted as tentatively true the first proposition, it became necessary before any advance step could be taken to find out definitely and clearly just what was the matter with the English. The place selected for investigation was the first-year work in the High and Latin School. This grade was chosen because it seemed logical to assume that pupils, on graduating from the elementary school, should show a definite standard of achievement, which might be expressed simply and concretely. Book excerpt: With this updated document, IRA and NCTE reaffirm their position that the primary purpose of assessment must be to improve teaching and learning for all students. Eleven core standards are presented and explained, and a helpful glossary makes this document suitable not only for educators but for parents, policymakers, school board members, and other stakeholders. Case studies of large-scale national tests and smaller scale classroom assessments (particularly in the context of RTI, or Response to Intervention) are used to highlight how assessments in use today do or do not meet the standards.

Book excerpt: "Stories from First-Year Composition: Pedagogies that Foster Student Agency and Writing Identity counters perceptions of first-year composition (FYC) as a service course that prepares students for college writing. The collection identifies a new FYC "service", one that accommodates the realities of writing both within and outside of the academy. The collection also offers insights into effective FYC pedagogies and opportunities for readers to consider and think about their own teaching and their identities as FYC instructors. "Reflect Before Reading" prompts and questions and after-reading activities, including "Questions for Discussion and Reflection," writing activities that ask readers to apply ideas shared in chapters to their own FYC courses, suggestions for further reading, and multimedia components (accessible to readers through links within the collection itself and as resources available on the book's website) invite readers to interact with chapters and to develop deeper and more enriched understandings of their FYC teaching and an accompanying sense of agency so that they not only can teach FYC effectively but also advocate for its value and relevance"--

Book excerpt: Composition in Convergence: The Impact of New Media on Writing Assessment considers how technological forms--such as computers and online courses--transform the assessment of writing, in addition to text classroom activity. Much has been written on how technology has affected writing, but assessment has had little attention. In this book, author Diane Penrod examines how, on the one hand, computer technology and interactive material create a disruption of conventional literacy practices (reading, writing, interpreting, and critique), while, on the other hand, the influence of computers allows teachers to propose and develop new models for thinking and writing to engage students in real-world settings. This text is intended for scholars and educators in writing and composition, educational assessment, writing and technology, computers and composition, and electronic literacy. In addition, it is appropriate for graduate students planning to teach and assess electronic writing or teach in online environments.
