Book excerpt: Annotation Kaufman prevents this summary of data on the fracture characteristics of aluminum alloys, broadly based on a publication by Alcoa in 1964, Fracture Characteristics of Aluminum Alloys. Coverage includes tensile properties as indicators of fracture behavior; notched-bar impact and related tests for toughness; notch toughness and sensitivity; tear resistance; fracture toughness; the interrelation of fracture characteristics; toughness at subzero and elevated temperatures; subcritical crack growth; and metallurgical considerations in fracture resistance. Most of the data is presented in only the English/engineering units, contrary to normal ASM International and Aluminum Association, Inc. policies. The author's credentials are not stated. c. Book excerpt: Plane strain fracture toughness tests have been made at room temperature, -112, and -320 F on plates of six aluminum alloys and tempers: 2014-T651, 2024-T851, 6061-T651, 7075-T651, 7075-T7351, and 7079-T651. The data indicate that the plane strain fracture toughness, KIc, of each of the alloys at the subzero temperatures is as high as or higher than that at room temperature. At -320 F apparently valid values of KIc ranged from 4 (7075-T7351) to 23 percent (2014-T651 and 7075-T651 ) higher than at room temperature. An even larger difference was indicated for 6061-T651 (about 40 percent higher), but the specimens tested at -320 F were not thick enough to satisfy the requirements of ASTM Test E 399 - 70 T. For the alloys of most interest for cryogenic applications, 2014-T651 and 6061-T651, the critical crack sizes at cryogenic temperatures are indicated to be as large as or larger than those at room temperature when evaluated at either a fixed operating stress or a constant percentage of the yield strength.

Book excerpt: Fracture-toughness testing using principles of fracture mechanics has developed to the point where it can be used as a basis for selection of materials, for estimating limiting design stresses assuming the presence of small flaws, and for analyzing failures. Current methods of measuring plane-stress and plane-strain fracturetoughness parameters are presented in this report. The specimens include center-cracked, edge-cracked, single-edge-cracked, surface-cracked, and notched round bars, which are subjected to tensile loading, and notched bars for bend tests. The different types of specimens permit evaluating sheet, plate, bar stock, and forgings as well as material from failed structures. Application of fracture-toughness parameters to design of high-strength structures is reviewed for both static and fatigue loading. Consideration of the fracture-mechanics concepts in design should lead to fewer problems with brittle fracture in high-strength structures. (Author).

Book excerpt: A multilaboratory blind comparison testing program evaluated the accuracy of the short rod method of measuring the fracture toughness of metallic materials. Valid comparisons between values measured according to ASTM Standard Method of Test for Plane-Strain Fracture Toughness of Metallic Materials (E 399-78) and values of the plane-strain critical stress intensity factor as measured by the short rod method of fracture toughness measurement (KIcSR) were obtained for several steels, aluminum alloys, and titanium. The KIcSR values measured by the short rod method were consistently low, averaging 6% below the measurements according to ASTM Standard Method E 399. A 4% adjustment in the short rod calibration constant that had been previously evaluated only to ±7% brings the two sets of measurements into very good agreement. The short rod method thus appears to be a viable alternative for measuring the fracture toughness of metallic materials.

Book excerpt: When an airframe component breaks suddenly, under conditions well within the design envelope, the occurrence is usually termed brittle fracture. This report uses an analytical scheme which combines data from several different sources in order to provide diagrams of fracture resistance versus thickness for a number of 'standard' yield strength levels. By using such diagrams, limited data on a new alloy or heat treatment may be compared, and the impact on designs where fracture resistance is important may be assessed. The data background employed in the analysis consisted of both iron- and aluminum-base airframe materials. However, this report focuses largely on the 7000-series aluminum alloys. Minimum expected behavior has been developed for this series of aluminum alloys by examining fracture toughness, yield strength, and thickness effect in accordance with the analytical scheme described.

Book excerpt: The International Conference on Fracture Mechanics Technology Applied to Material Evaluation and Structure Design was held in Melbourne, Australia, from August 10 to 13, 1982. It was sponsored jointly by the Australian Fracture Group and Institute of Fracture and Solid Mechanics at Lehigh University. Pro fessor G. C. Sih of Lehigh University, Drs. N. E. Ryan and R. Jones of Aeronau tical Research Laboratories served as Co-Chairmen. They initiated the organiza tion of this international event to provide an opportunity for the practitioners, engineers and interested individuals to present and discuss recent advances in the evaluation of material and structure damage originating from defects or cracks. Particular emphases were placed on applying the fracture mechanics tech nology for assessing interactions between material properties, design and opera tional requirements. It is timely to hold such a Conference in Australia as she embarks on technology extensive industries where safeguarding structures from pre mature and unexpected failure is essential from both the technical and economical points. view The application of system-type approach to failure control owes much of its success to fracture mechanics. It is now generally accepted that the discipline, when properly implemented, provides a sound engineering basis for accounting in teractions between material properties, design, fabrication, inspection and op erational requirements. The approach offers effective solutions for design and maintenance of large-scale energy generation plants, mining machineries, oil ex ploration and retrieval equipments, land, sea and air transport vehicles.
