Book excerpt: This revision of the ASCE Standard Practice for Direct Design of Buried Precast Concrete Pipe Using Standard Installations (SIDD) is a replacement of ANSI/ASCE 15-93. This Standard focuses on the direct design of buried precast concrete pipe using Standard Installations, and reviews the design and construction of the soil/pipe interaction system that is used for the conveyance of sewage, industrial wastes, storm water, and drainage. To account for the interaction between pipe and soil envelope when determining loads, pressure distributions, moment, thrust and shear, this volume presents the SIDD method for buried precast concrete pipe. Excavation, safety, foundation, bedding, sheathing removal and trench shield advancement are among those construction requirements for precast concrete pipe designed by the SIDD method that are presented here. This standard practice may be used as a reference in preparing project specifications based on the SIDD method. Four types of standard embankment installations and four types of standard trench installations are covered in the standard. The limits state design procedure specified for the design of pipe is consistent with the procedures outlined in the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges. The commentary provides supporting background data.

Book excerpt: Examines the concept of aging process facilities and infrastructure in high hazard industries and highlights options for dealing with the problem while addressing safety issues This book explores the many ways in which process facilities, equipment, and infrastructure might deteriorate upon continuous exposure to operating and climatic conditions. It covers the functional and physical failure modes for various categories of equipment and discusses the many warning signs of deterioration. Dealing with Aging Process Facilities and Infrastructure also explains how to deal with equipment that may not be safe to operate. The book describes a risk-based strategy in which plant leaders and supervisors can make more informed decisions on aging situations and then communicate them to upper management effectively. Additionally, it discusses the dismantling and safe removal of facilities that are approaching their intended lifecycle or have passed it altogether. Filled with numerous case studies featuring photographs to illustrate the positive and negative experiences of others who have dealt with aging facilities, Dealing with Aging Process Facilities and Infrastructure covers the causes of equipment failures due to aging and their consequences; plant management commitment and responsibility; inspection and maintenance practices for managing life cycle; specific aging asset integrity management practices; and more. Describes symptoms and causal mechanisms of aging in various categories of process equipment Presents key considerations for making informed risk-based decisions regarding the repair or replacement of aging process facilities and infrastructure Discusses practices for managing process facility and infrastructure life cycle Includes examples and case histories of failures related to aging Dealing with Aging Process Facilities and Infrastructure is an important book for industrial practitioners who are often faced with the challenge of managing process facilities and infrastructure as they approach the end of their useful lifecycle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks A detailed view on the effects of seismic activity on tank structures As the use of above-ground and underground storage tanks (ASTs and USTs) continues to grow—with approximately 545,000 in the USA alone—the greatest threat to ASTs and USTs is earthquakes, causing the contamination of groundwater, a vital source of drinking water throughout the world. These tanks suffer a great deal of strain during an earthquake, as a complicated pattern of stress affects them, such that poorly designed tanks have leaked, buckled, or even collapsed during seismic events. Furthermore, in oil and gas industrial plants, the risk of damage is even more critical due to the effects of explosion, collapse, and air or soil contamination by chemical fluid spillages. Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks provides the first in-depth discussion of the principles and applications of shell structure design and earthquake engineering analyses focused on tank structures, and it explains how these methodologies can help prevent the destruction of ASTs and USTs during earthquakes. Providing a thorough examination of the design, analysis, and performance of steel, reinforced concrete, and precast tanks, this book takes a look at tanks that are above-ground, underground, or elevated, anchored and unanchored, and rigid or flexible, and evaluates the efficacy of each method during times of seismic shaking—and it does so without getting bogged down in impenetrable mathematics and theory. Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks readers will also find: A global approach to the best analytical and practical solutions available in each region: discussion of the latest US codes and standards from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ACSE 7), the American Concrete Institute (ACI 350,3, 371.R), the American Water Works Association (AWWA D100, D110, D115), and the American Petroleum Institute (API 650) an overview of the European codes and standards, including Eurocode 8-4 and CEN-EN 14015 Hundreds of step-by-step equations, accompanied by illustrations Photographs illustrating real-world damage to tanks caused by seismic events Perfect for practising structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, civil engineers, and engineers of all kinds who are responsible for the design, analysis, and performance of tanks and their foundations—as well as students studying engineering—Seismic Design and Analysis of Tanks is a landmark text, the first work of its kind to deal with the seismic engineering performance of all types of storage tanks.

Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to geotechnical, structural, and bridge engineers, especially those involved in the development and implementation of the geotechnical aspects of the AASHTO Bridge Code. The synthesis documents a review of geotechnical related LRFD specifications and their development worldwide to compare them with the current AASHTO LRFD Bridge Code. Design procedures for foundations, earth retaining structures, and culverts are summarized and compared with the methods specified by the AASHTO code. This TRB report provides information designed to assist engineers in implementing the geotechnical features of LRFD methods. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic and international sources. Interviews were also conducted with selected international experts. The limited available experience in the United States and information from international practice are discussed to understand the problems that have arisen in order that solutions may be found. Based on the studies reported here, suggestions for improving the code are identified.
