Book excerpt: As a boy who grew up in Akron, F. A. Seiberling tramped the fields and woods outside of the city, hunting the area where stone had once been quarried. Even then, the dramatic views of the Cuyahoga Valley, natural vistas that spread before him like paintings, would stop young Frank in his tracks. He never forgot them. Years later, the founder of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company would build Stan Hywet-the Old English term for stone quarry-a sixty-five-room Tudor Revival mansion on seventy acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, orchards, and vistas. The skill and artistry of photographers Ian Adams and Barney Taxel portray the splendor of all four seasons at Stan Hywet, now maintained through the Stan Hywet Hall Foundation. These vivid images depict the restored mansion in its magnificent setting, capturing the springtime charm of mayapples and periwinkle in the Dell, the classic elegance of Gertrude Seiberling's Music Room, and the stark grandeur of snow-covered oaks mirrored in a reflection pool. From spring mornings to Christmas celebrations, Steve Love narrates as the reader strolls through the rooms and halls of the mansion and rambles down the lanes through its magnificent gardens and into the lives of the Seiberlings. With a foreword by F. A.'s grandson, former congressman John F. Seiberling, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens captures the Seiberling family motto, Non Nobis Solum, or, Not for Us Alone-a motto which remains engraved, to this day, above the entrance to the Manor House.

Book excerpt: In 2015, F. A. and Gertrude Seiberling's country estate, Stan Hywet, will be one hundred years old. Unlike many mansions that were destroyed by the wrecking ball, the edifice in Akron, Ohio, still stands and visitors walk through its halls and gardens regularly. The stone quarry is the centerpiece for many events and ceremonies, as it was from the beginning when the Seiberlings opened its doors to employees, world-famous musicians, and corporate moguls. The six-five-room Tudor Revival mansion exudes a sense of history. The house is noted for its intricate paneling, made from American oak, rosewood, and chestnut. Innovations in the home include a built-in vacuum system and a thirty-seven-station telephone/intercom system. The extensive gardens at Stan Hywet once encompassed over a thousand acres and were designed by renowned American landscape architect, Warren Manning. Today, seventy acres accompany the estate, including a formal English garden redesigned by Ellen Biddle Shipman in 1929 and restored in the 1990s; a Birch Tree Allée; the Dell, a wild, naturalistic woodland garden; and a Japanese Garden. Revised and updated for the anniversary with many new images, photographers Ian Adams and Barney Taxel portray the splendor of all four seasons at Stan Hywet. Seiberling, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens captures the Seiberling family motto, Non Nobis Solum, or, Not for Us Alone--a motto which remains engraved, to this day, above the entrance to the Manor House.

Sturgeon—comes a long-overdue field guide to finding and identifying the mushrooms and fleshy fungi found in the Appalachian mountains from Canada to Georgia. Edibility and toxicity, habitat, ecology, and detailed diagnostic features of the disparate forms they take throughout their life cycles are all included, enabling the reader to identify species without the use of a microscope or chemicals. Appalachian Mushrooms is unparalleled in its accuracy and currency, from its detailed photographs to descriptions based on the most advanced classification information available, including recent DNA studies that have upended some mushrooms’ previously accepted taxonomies. Sturgeon celebrates more than 400 species in all their diversity, beauty, and scientific interest, going beyond the expected specimens to include uncommon ones and those that are indigenous to the Appalachian region. This guide is destined to be an indispensable authority on the subject for everyone from beginning hobbyists to trained experts, throughout Appalachia and beyond.

'The Well of Loneliness' is a novel that follows an upper-class Englishwoman who falls in love with another woman while serving as an ambulance driver in World War I. Marguerite Radclyffe Hall was born on 12th August 1880, in Bournemouth, England. Hall's first novel The Unlit Lamp (1924) was a lengthy and grim tale that proved hard to sell. It was only published following the success of the much lighter social comedy The Forge (1924), which made the best-seller list of John O'London's Weekly. Hall is a key figure in lesbian literature for her novel The Well of Loneliness (1928). This is her only work with overt lesbian themes and tells the story of the life of a masculine lesbian named Stephen Gordon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warren H. Manning's (1860-1938) national practice comprised more than sixteen hundred landscape design and planning projects throughout North America, from small home grounds to estates, cemeteries, college campuses, parks and park systems, and new industrial towns. Manning approached his design and planning projects from an environmental perspective, conceptualizing projects as components of larger regional (in some cases, national) systems, a method that contrasted sharply with those of his stylistically oriented colleagues. In this regard, as in many others, Manning had been influenced by his years with the Olmsted firm, where the foundations of his resource-based approach to design were forged. Manning's overlay map methods, later adopted by the renowned landscape architect Ian McHarg, providedthe basis for computer mapping software in widespread use today. One of the eleven founders of the American Society of Landscape Architects, Manning also ran one of the nation's largest offices, where he trained several influential designers, including Fletcher Steele, A. D. Taylor, Charles Gillette, and Dan Kiley. After Manning's death, his reputation slipped into obscurity. Contributors to the Warren H. Manning Research Project have worked more than a decade to assess current conditions of his built projects and to compile a richly illustrated compendium of site essays that illuminate the range, scope, and significance of Manning's notable career with specially commissioned photographs by Carol Betsch.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lake View Cemetery, founded in 1869, was modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France. Over 107,000 individuals are interred on the sprawling 285 acre expanse that is located four and one-half miles from Cleveland's Public Square. According to an 1870 Plain Dealer report, the cemetery was designed to combine all the attractive features that "nature and true art can produce" to harmonize nature's alphabet--"stone, earth, wood and water." The landscape was laid out with broad avenues and shady walks "near the fountains in view of many a rustic pile [edifice] and quiet grave and stately monument." The cemetery became the burial place for many of Cleveland's prominent citizens including James A. Garfield, John D. Rockefeller, and J. H. Wade. Cleveland photographer Barney Taxel has spent over a decade, during all seasons, exploring the stunning landmark. The culmination of the personal project is this collection of over two hundred of his creations that reveal the spirit and essence of the Lake View Cemetery. Not only are images of the famous Garfield monument and the Wade Chapel captured, but so are the artistic splendors of the landscape, stonework, and memorials. To provide context, the book also includes a history of the Lake View Cemetery based on archival research.

Book excerpt: The Holden Arboretum is a living museum of forests and woodlands, meadows and display gardens, mountains and ravines, rock ledges and lakes, rivers and streams, wetlands and bogs, with an abundance of wildlife. It is a place of year-round beauty with tremendous scientific and ecological importance. The Holden Arboretum was established on 100 acres in 1931 by people of vision and great generosity who understood the importance of protecting precious green spaces for future generations. Today, Holden spans 3,400 acres and is nationally known for its plant collections, education programs, research efforts, and its commitment to conservation. Albert Fairchild Holden, the founding father of the Holden Arboretum, was born in 1866, the third of nine children born to Liberty and Delia Bulkey Holden. His mother was instrumental in the founding of the Cleveland School of Art, which became the Cleveland Institute of Art; his father was involved in the mining business and was, at one time, the owner of Cleveland's major newspaper, The Plain Dealer. Though he had at one time considered bequeathing his estate to Harvard, his alma mater, the untimely death of his 12-year old daughter, Elizabeth, inspired him to instead endow the arboretum in her memory. A trust agreement in his will designated that funds be set aside for development of an arboretum following a life interest for his two remaining daughters, who were teenagers at the time of his death in 1913.

Book excerpt: Slavic Village began as part of the Connecticut Western Reserve, a parcel of land surveyed and populated with East Coast residents seeking adventure and fortune in the 19th century. As industry came to the Cuyahoga River valley, immigrant workers-first Irish, then Poles and Czechs-settled in the area to be near jobs in the rolling mills, chemical plants, and garment factories. They left their mark on the neighborhood's architecture, food, and culture, and many of their descendants still call the area home. Slavic Village has produced a number of interesting personalities, including Olympic sprinter Stella Walsh and former Cleveland mayor and current United States congressman Dennis Kucinich.
