Dusto are presented in comparison with other predictions and shock tube data. Several charts have been prepared in terms of simulation parameters, whereby, the heating rates based on these results can be quickly determined at the stagnation point of a blunt body in shock tubes, hypervelocity tunnels and gun ranges. Book excerpt: A singular perturbation solution to the blunt-body stagnation-region flow of an inviscid, radiating gas has been obtained by means of the Poincař-Lighthill-Kuo, or perturbation-of-coordinates, method. A number of results for a gray gas have been presented in order to provide some physical insight into the effects of various parameters on the shock-layer enthalpy profiles and the radiant heat-transfer rates. A nongray absorption-coefficient model was developed which includes, in an approximate way, the important vacuum-ultraviolet contributions of bound-free and line transitions. This model was used to obtain solutions pertinent to the case of reentry into the earth's atmosphere. While the results are restricted to small values of the radiation cooling parameter, which characterizes the relative importance of radiation and convection as energy-transport mechanisms, they cover broad ranges of vehicle velocity, altitude, and nose radius, which are of practical interest. The characteristic enthalpy variation of the model absorption coefficient was found to be nearly independent of altitude and nose radius for fixed vehicle velocity except for velocities lower than 10.67 km/sec. Thus it was possible to correlate certain quantities by plotting these quantities as functions of the nondimensional adiabatic radiant heat-transfer rate for various altitudes and nose radii at fixed vehicle velocity. Among the quantities correlated was the cooling factor (the ratio of the stagnation-point radiant heat-transfer rate to the adiabatic radiant heat-transfer rate). The cooling-factor correlation is particularly useful because it eliminates the need to perform nonadiabatic calculations whenever radiant heat-transfer rates are desired. Also correlated was the factor by which the convective heat-transfer rate is reduced because of radiation losses in the shock layer. Finally, upper-bound estimates were made of the effects of absorption of precursor radiation by the free-stream air on the radiant and convective heat-transfer rates.

Book excerpt: Measurements of average heat-transfer rates to blunt-nosed, axisymmetric, cold-walled bodies in a low-density, hypervelocity wind tunnel are given. Stream density was such that Reynolds and Knudsen numbers, based on nose radius and conditions immediately behind the bow shock, varied from 5 to 20 and 0.11 to 0.056, respectively. Thus, scaling on the basis of Knudsen number, these conditions may be said to simulate a body of one-foot nose radius at as much as 315,500-ft altitude. Heat-transfer rates are discussed in relation to the flow model successfully used in the past for studies of flows of high Reynolds number. In this context, it was found that measured heat-transfer rates to hemispheres below shock-layer Reynolds numbers of 20 exhibited a decreasing nondimensionalized rate relative to that estimated by methods appropriate to high Reynolds number conditions. This behavior is in accord with various applicable theories. Rates for the flat-faced bodies showed no tendency to decrease, and they were somewhat higher than predicted by theories for high Reynolds numbers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relations are presented for the calculation of heat transfer at the forward stagnation point of both two-dimensional and axially symmetric blunt bodies. The relations for the heat transfer, which were obtained from exact solutions to the equations of the laminar boundary layer, are presented in terms of the local velocity gradient at the stagnation point. These exact solutions include the effects of variation of fluid properties, Prandtl number, and transpiration cooling. Examples illustrating the calculation procedure are also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made of the effect of an applied magnetic field on the bow shock of a blunt body in hypervelocity air flow. Quantitative measurements of the stand-off distance were made in a three-inch electromagnetic shock tube with free-stream velocities up to 22,000 feet per second. The test body was a hemispherical cylinder containing a coaxial pulsed magnet coil in the nose which produced field strengths at the stagnation point of up to 40 kilogauss. The application of the magnetic field displaced the bow shock upstream and the stand-off distance increased by a factor of 7.5 for the condition, nondimensional parameter = 69. The experimental results were compared with theory and good agreement was obtained within the range of experimental conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: Theoretical Modelling of Aeroheating on Sharpened Noses under Rarefied Gas Effects and Nonequilibrium Real Gas Effects employs a theoretical modeling method to study hypersonic flows and aeroheating on sharpened noses under rarefied gas effects and nonequilibrium real gas effects that are beyond the scope of traditional fluid mechanics. It reveals the nonlinear and nonequilibrium features, discusses the corresponding flow and heat transfer mechanisms, and ultimately establishes an analytical engineering theory framework for hypersonic rarefied and chemical nonequilibrium flows. The original analytical findings presented are not only of great academic significance, but also hold considerable potential for applications in engineering practice. The study explores a viable new approach, beyond the heavily relied-upon numerical methods and empirical formulas, to the present research field, which could be regarded as a successful implementation of the idea and methodology of the engineering sciences.
