Book excerpt: Undoped zirconia has low ionic conductivity which is not sufficient for the practical application. Addition of dopants improve the ionic conductivity by stabilization of zirconia in the cubic phase which is most widely used for practical applications such as solid electrolyte in oxygen sensors and solid oxide fuel cells. The structural and ionic conductivity of zirconia doped with calcia, gadolinia or ceria is widely studied while there is lack in the literature concerning studying of the structural and ionic conductivity of scandia stabilized zirconia system co-doped with calcia, gadolinia or ceria and zirconia co-doped with calcia and gadolinia or with calcia and ceria. This book provide improving the ionic conductivity of zirconia and also provide an attempt to obtain new zirconia-based oxide electrolytes by studying the structural and electrical properties of co-doped zirconia based on single doped zirconia system which is widely studied. The structural and electrical properties of stabilized zirconia investigation will help students or the professionals who considering zirconia based electrolytes for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells or Oxygen Sensors.

Book excerpt: Safe operation of a sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) requires in-depth understanding of the corrosion implications of liquid sodium coolant on reactor materials. Dissolved oxygen concentration is of particular importance in characterizing sodium attack, so an accurate means of measuring and controlling oxygen is crucial. There is significant room for improvement in current oxygen sensing technology, so extensive research has been conducted at the University of Wisconsin-Madison to address this issue. Experimental facilities and electrochemical oxygen sensors have been developed, tested, and analyzed. This research is discussed in detail in this report. The oxygen sensors tested in this research were developed using a yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte whereas many of the past research in this field was conducted with yttria doped thoria (YDT or YST) electrolytes. Thorium, an alpha emitter, is expensive and increasingly difficult to acquire, so motivation to switch to a new material exists. YSZ is commonly used as the electrolyte for solid oxide fuel cells, and ample data is available for high temperature ionic conduction of this material. While some work has been done with YSZ in oxygen sensors (the automotive field, for example, uses YSZ sensors), research on YSZ sensors in sodium is limited. A thorough study of YSZ-based electrochemical oxygen sensors must include detailed corrosion testing and analysis of YSZ in liquid sodium, careful oxygen sensor development and testing, and finally, a comprehensive analysis of the acquired sensor data. The research presented in this report describes the design and development of an electrochemical oxygen sensor for use in sodium using a YSZ electrolyte through the previously-mentioned steps. The designed sensors were subjected to a series of hypotheses which advance common understanding of oxygen sensor signal. These results were used in conjunction with past research to form reliable conclusions.

Book excerpt: Due to its many potential benefits, including high electrical efficiency and low environmental emissions, solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology is the subject of extensive research and development efforts by national laboratories, universities, and private industries. In these proceedings, international scientists and engineers present recent technical progress on materials-related aspects of fuel cells including SOFC component materials, materials processing, and cell/stack design, performance, and stability. Emerging trends in electrochemical materials, electrodics, interface engineering, long-term chemical interactions, and more are included. This book is compiled of papers presented at the Proceedings of the 30th International Conference on Advanced Ceramics and Composites, January 22-27, 2006, Cocoa Beach, Florida. Organized and sponsored by The American Ceramic Society and The American Ceramic Society's Engineering Ceramics Division in conjunction with the Nuclear and Environmental Technology Division.

Book excerpt: Fuel cell technology is quite promising for conversion of chemical energy of hydrocarbon fuels into electricity without forming air pollutants. There are several types of fuel cells: polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), and alkaline fuel cell (AFC). Among these, SOFCs are the most efficient and have various advantages such as flexibility in fuel, high reliability, simple balance of plant (BOP), and a long history. Therefore, SOFC technology is attracting much attention as a power plant and is now close to marketing as a combined heat and power generation system. From the beginning of SOFC development, many perovskite oxides have been used for SOFC components; for example, LaMnO -based oxide for the cathode and 3 LaCrO for the interconnect are the most well known materials for SOFCs. The 3 current SOFCs operate at temperatures higher than 1073 K. However, lowering the operating temperature of SOFCs is an important goal for further SOFC development. Reliability, durability, and stability of the SOFCs could be greatly improved by decreasing their operating temperature. In addition, a lower operating temperature is also beneficial for shortening the startup time and decreasing energy loss from heat radiation. For this purpose, faster oxide ion conductors are required to replace the conventional Y O -stabilized ZrO 2 3 2 electrolyte. A new class of electrolytes such as LaGaO is considered to be 3 highly useful for intermediate-temperature SOFCs.

Traditional 8 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (8YSZ) solid oxide electrolytes operate at high temperatures (850°C-1000°C) to achieve high ionic conductivity (> 0.1 Scm -1 at 1000°C) by oxygen ion diffusion via vacancies. Operation at such temperatures requires high temperature electrode materials and shortens device lifetime due to interdiffusion and reactions at electrode/electrolyte interfaces. These concerns drive research in current systems and alternative materials to improve ionic conductivity at reduced operating temperatures. This research considers how grain size and grain boundary phases affect three electrolyte materials with different ion diffusion mechanisms. First, the conductivity of ultra-fine grained two-step sintered and large grained conventional sintered 8YSZ are compared to determine if enhanced ionic conductivity occurs supporting the theory that ion blocking impurities in grain boundaries are diluted with decreasing grain size. Second, apatite-type lanthanide silicates (Ln 9.33 (SiO 4) 6 O 2) which exhibit anisotropic interstitial oxygen diffusion at intermediate temperatures (400°C-800°C) are studied to determine whether grain boundaries detrimentally affect conductivity. Lastly, proton conducting La-monazite (LaPO 4) is evaluated to determine the role of Sr-doping (up to 10% substitution of La with Sr) on grain size and conductivity as well as the effect of sintering in air or water vapor on the formation of intergranular phases rich in Sr and P. This research investigates grain boundary effects in three solid oxide electrolyte materials with the goal of understanding how grain boundaries affect ionic conductivity and the atomistic behavior governing these different diffusion mechanisms.
