Book Synopsis In Search of Stability by : Sashi Sivramkrishna
Download or read book In Search of Stability written by Sashi Sivramkrishna and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Search of Stability seeks to understand the economics of money through a narrative on the history of the rupee. The period delineated for study is from the time of introduction of the rupee by Sher Shah Suri in 1542 up to 1971, the year which marked the beginning of the end of the Bretton Woods era and a fixed exchange rate regime. The underlying thread that runs through the narrative is the positive economics of money and history of the rupee. This is a book that explains what happened rather than raising normative questions on what ought to have happened or what could have been a more appropriate monetary system for India. The economics of money also draws us into understanding the evolution of monetary instruments through history and their impact on the economy. These instruments cannot be separated from the institutions that develop and are developed by them. A digression into a study of the origins, nature and development of some of the most important monetary institutions in India has therefore been included in this study. While standards of living have risen enormously, money has struggled to maintain its value across place and time, without definitive success. This has brought with it crises and severe hardship to entire societies; a lesson which the history of the Indian rupee unequivocally reveals.

Book Synopsis The Power of Currencies and Currencies of Power by : Alan Wheatley
Download or read book The Power of Currencies and Currencies of Power written by Alan Wheatley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-03 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, a Great Powers arsenal extends well beyond the military, embracing soft power and also currency power. The dollar dominates the global economy, used in settling trade and investment deals but also held in reserve in vast quantities by central banks in case of a payments crisis. This demand for dollars keeps US borrowing costs lower than they otherwise would be, reinforcing the countrys economic power and helping to pay for the worlds strongest armed forces. This Adelphi sets out how the US has regularly deployed the power of the dollar to put pressure on foes such as Iran, as well as allies including the United Kingdom and Germany. Contributors, including Robert Zoellick, the former head of the World Bank, and John Williamson, a leading expert on currencies, assess how long the US will be able to maintain this exorbitant privilege in tandem with a rising China. Beijing, sensing that the global crisis might herald the end of the dollars supremacy, is eager to gain monetary power by carving out an international role for its own currency, the renminbi. The book examines the obstacles China must first overcome in its quest and the strategic consequences if it succeeds.

Book Synopsis Engineering Economics and Costing by : Mishra Sasmita
Download or read book Engineering Economics and Costing written by Mishra Sasmita and published by PHI Learning Pvt. Ltd.. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantially revised and updated edition of Engineering Economics and Costing continues to build on the fundamental principles and applications of the subject. Divided into three parts: Part I, Engineering Economics; Part II, Financial System; and Part III, Cost Accounting, the text discusses, in a simple and easy-to-understand language, such topics as interest formulas and their applications, and various methods, for example, the present worth method of comparison, future worth method, annual equivalent method, and the rate of return method. It also includes, in its Appendix, interest tables for a wide range of interest rates (0.25-50%) and for a period ranging from one year to 100 years. These tables, along with the topics discussed, will help students of both Engineering and MCA in evaluating engineering projects. What is New to This Edition: Chapter 2 gives a distinction between Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Chapter 2 also explains the concept of income elasticity, cross elasticity of demand, and elasticity of substitution. At the end Chapter 3, a variety of simple numerical problems with solutions are given to illustrate the concepts discussed. Chapter 8 provides more examples illustrating the various aspects of break-even analysis. While the book is intended primarily as a text for B.Tech. and MCA courses of Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Orissa, it would also be highly useful for BE/B.Tech. students of other universities/institutes. Besides, practising engineers and project consultants making economic decision analysis would find this well-organized book immensely valuable. What the Reviewer Says: The book is very clear in exposition of the concepts and theories of Economics. I am confident that it will be extremely helpful to the engineering students. --Dr. NIRMAL CHANDRA SAHU Professor, Postgraduate Department of Economics Berhampur University, Orissa
