Als Primarliteratur dient das Paper "A within-subject analysis of other-regarding preferences" von Mariana Blanco, Dirk Engelmann und Hans Theo Normann. Im Zuge der weltweiten Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise der vergangenen Jahre kam es zunehmend zu einem offentlichen Hinterfragen einiger traditioneller und bis dato uberwiegend akzeptierter Grundsatze der Wirtschaftswissenschaften. Eines der bekanntesten Beispiele dafur ist das Modell des homo oeconomicus, der als rationales, eigennutziges und gewinnmaximierendes Individuum wesentlicher Bestandteil aller neoklassischen Theorien ist. Wahrend in wissenschaftlichen Kreisen bereits seit langer Zeit uber das Modell diskutiert wird und sich mit der Verhaltensokonomik gar ein eigenstandiger Forschungszweig zur Untersuchung menschlichen Verhaltens gebildet hat, wurde es, vor allem aus Grunden der Einfachheit und mathematischer Beschreibbarkeit und Berechenbarkeit im Wesentlichen doch stets akzeptiert und angewandt. Dabei hatte bereits Adam Smith (1790) festgestellt: Man mag den Menschen fur noch so egoistisch halten, es liegen doch offenbar gewisse Prinzipien in seiner Natur, die ihn dazu bestimmen, an dem Schicksal anderer Anteil zu nehmen, und die ihm selbst die Gluckseligkeit dieser anderen zum Bedurfnis machen, obgleich er keinen anderen Vorteil daraus zieht, als das Vergnugen, Zeuge davon zu sein." The laboratory studies test the implications of different models of trust and reputation, such as the effects of social and institutional embeddedness and the potentially emerging inequalities this may cause. The field studies test these implications in applied settings such as business purchasing and supply, informal care, and different kinds of collaboration networks. The focus is on effects of social conditions, in particular different forms of social and institutional embeddedness, on social outcomes at the macro level. The book sets forth a mixed-method approach by applying different empirical methods to test hypotheses about similar questions.
