Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Transport Reactions focuses on the processes and reactions involved in the transport of solid or liquid substances to form vapor phase reaction products. The publication first offers information on experimental and theoretical principles and the transport of solid substances and its special applications. Discussions focus on calculation of the transport effect of heterogeneous equilibria for a gas motion between equilibrium spaces; transport effect and the thermodynamic quantities of the transport reaction; separation and purification of substances by means of material transport; and crystalline substances with homogeneous regions. The text then elaborates on the reaction process in the gas phase and chemical transport processes as an aid in preparative chemistry. The manuscript ponders on the use of transport experiments in the determination of thermodynamic values, including determination of quantities transported in the diffusion tube, test of reversibility, and inversion of transport direction. The book is a vital reference for readers interested in chemical transport reactions.

Book excerpt: This book contains a novel combination of experimental and model-based investigations, elucidating the complex processes inside zinc air batteries. The work presented helps to answer which battery composition and which air-composition should be adjusted to maintain stable and efficient charge/discharge cycling. In detail, electrochemical investigations and X-ray transmission tomography are applied on button cell zinc air batteries and in-house set-ups. Moreover, model-based investigations of the battery anode and the impact of relative humidity, active operation, carbon dioxide and oxygen on zinc air battery operation are presented. The techniques used in this work complement each other well and yield an unprecedented understanding of zinc air batteries. The methods applied are adaptable and can potentially be applied to gain further understanding of other metal air batteries.

These processes may interact with each other and may lead to self-organized structures, fluctuations, instabilities, and evolutionary systems. Nonequilibrium Thermodynamics, Third Edition emphasizes the unifying role of thermodynamics in analyzing the natural phenomena. This third edition updates and expands on the first and second editions by focusing on the general balance equations for coupled processes of physical, chemical, and biological systems. The new edition contains a new chapter on stochastic approaches to include the statistical thermodynamics, mesoscopic nonequilibrium thermodynamics, fluctuation theory, information theory, and modeling the coupled biochemical systems in thermodynamic analysis. This new addition also comes with more examples and practice problems. - Informs and updates on all the latest developments in the field - Contributions from leading authorities and industry experts - A useful text for seniors and graduate students from diverse engineering and science programs to analyze some nonequilibrium, coupled, evolutionary, stochastic, and dissipative processes - Highlights fundamentals of equilibrium thermodynamics, transport processes and chemical reactions - Expands the theory of nonequilibrium thermodynamics and its use in coupled transport processes and chemical reactions in physical, chemical, and biological systems - Presents a unified analysis for transport and rate processes in various time and space scales - Discusses stochastic approaches in thermodynamic analysis including fluctuation and information theories - Has 198 fully solved examples and 287 practice problems - An Instructor Resource containing the Solution Manual can be obtained from the author: [email protected]

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both theoretical and experimental work have been reported on instabilities in purely dissipative bulk systems in which occur chemical reactions and transport processes such as diffusion. The authors investigate instabilities and related phenomena in systems in which certain reactions are localized to electrodes, membranes or other surfaces and the local sites are immersed in a bulk medium with transport processes and additional reactions. Gradients within the local sites are neglected and for simplicity membranes are assumed not to inhibit transport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to the dynamics of reaction-diffusion systems, with a focus on fronts and stationary spatial patterns. Emphasis is on systems that are non-standard in the sense that either the transport is not simply classical diffusion (Brownian motion) or the system is not homogeneous. A important feature is the derivation of the basic phenomenological equations from the mesoscopic system properties. Topics addressed include transport with inertia, described by persistent random walks and hyperbolic reaction-transport equations and transport by anomalous diffusion, in particular subdiffusion, where the mean square displacement grows sublinearly with time. In particular reaction-diffusion systems are studied where the medium is in turn either spatially inhomogeneous, compositionally heterogeneous or spatially discrete. Applications span a vast range of interdisciplinary fields and the systems considered can be as different as human or animal groups migrating under external influences, population ecology and evolution, complex chemical reactions, or networks of biological cells. Several chapters treat these applications in detail.

Book excerpt: Many chemical and biological processes take place in fluid environments in constant motion OCo chemical reactions in the atmosphere, biological population dynamics in the ocean, chemical reactors, combustion, and microfluidic devices. Applications of concepts from the field of nonlinear dynamical systems have led to significant progress over the last decade in the theoretical understanding of complex phenomena observed in such systems. This book introduces the theoretical approaches for describing mixing and transport in fluid flows. It reviews the basic concepts of dynamical phenomena arising from the nonlinear interactions in chemical and biological systems. The coverage includes a comprehensive overview of recent results on the effect of mixing on spatial structure and the dynamics of chemically and biologically active components in fluid flows, in particular oceanic plankton dynamics. Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Fluid Flows (248 KB). Contents: Fluid Flows; Mixing and Dispersion in Fluid Flows; Chemical and Ecological Models; Reaction-Diffusion Dynamics; Fast Binary Reactions and the Lamellar Approach; Decay-Type and Stable Reaction Dynamics in Flows; Mixing in Autocatalytic-Type Processes; Mixing in Oscillatory Media; Further Reading.
