Book Synopsis Stability of Lyophobic Colloids in Aqueous Media by : Charles J. Quilty

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detachment and stabilization of solid contamination from weapon substrates presents a difficult problem in weapons cleaning. An understanding of the fundamental principles involved in the stabilization of solid contamination is, therefore, important for formulation of improved weapons cleaning materials. In this investigation, the stability of common weapon contamination was studied in aqueous surfactant solutions. Zeta potentials of aqueous dispersions of lyophobic colloids were determined by electrophoresis measurements and compared with sedimentation times of the dispersed systems. The stability of the dispersions was found to be governed by double-layer electrostatic repulsion at the surface of the colloidal particles. Calculations based on the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory of stability were in excellent agreement with the experimental data. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and up-to-date account of filtration in solid-liquid separation processes, with a sharp focus on the influence of pro-cess variables on performance and specific applications is pre-sented in this volume. With contribu-tions from researchers with significant industrial experi-ence, as well as by senior academics, this publication fea-tures a deep bed filtration overview with informa-tion on mathematical modeling and application in wastewater treat-ment. Pre-treatment filtration techniques such as cartridge filters, pre-coat filters and micro screening are included. Membrane filtration processes to remove dis-solved and suspended solids for the recovery of valuable ma-terials and the provision of high quality water are covered. Sludge de-watering methods such as centrifuga-tion, and vacuum and pressure filtration are described. Application status data, tables, figures and diagrams are also included. This volume is of special interest to practicing engineers and technolo-gists dealing with treatment problems requiring filtration solu-tions and to graduate students in environmental engineering.

Book Synopsis Characterization of Liquids, Nano- and Microparticulates, and Porous Bodies using Ultrasound by : Andrei S. Dukhin
Download or read book Characterization of Liquids, Nano- and Microparticulates, and Porous Bodies using Ultrasound written by Andrei S. Dukhin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two key words define the scope of this book: 'ultrasound' and 'colloids'. Historically, there has been little real communication between practitioners in these two fields. Although there is a large body of literature devoted to ultrasound phenomenon in colloids, there is little recognition that such phenomena may be of real importance for both the development and applications of colloid science. On the other side, colloid scientists have not embraced acoustics as an important tool for characterizing colloids. The lack of any serious dialogue between these scientific fields is the biggest motivation behind this book. - Covers in detail this multidisciplinary field combining acoustics, electroacoustics, colloid science, analytical chemistry and rheology - Provides a bibliography with more than 1,000 references - Presents theories and their experimental verification, as well as analysis of the methods and hardware pertaining to applications such as pharmaceuticals, ceramics, and polymers
